Almost got hit by a soccer mom this morning as she was switching to the left lane to slow traffic down...  I blew my horn at her, but it wasn't my horn that got her attention. It was my drummer muffler that finally woke her up. My pathetic horn can hardly be heard over the drummer! Anyway, I think I saw a thread awhile ago with horn upgrade ideas. Anybody got an easy bolt on replacement for the stocker, with more db's?? I am even thinking along the lines of a small air horn... Any ideas?? -Jon. | ||

Check Ebay for the Stebel magnum series 80 horns. All electric and rated at 139db. I bought a set on ebay for like 15 bucks and put one on the harley inside the cowbell and one on the motard. Very loud, and no special wiring or relays. I need another for the Uly now. | ||

The Stebel sounds like a small train coming. I have never heard such a loud horn from such a small package. They are also available at twistedthrottle.com I would suggest running it with a relay though. It uses a lot of power and doesn't seem to reach it's full potential with out it. | ||

I installed a low tone freeway blaster as well as leaving the stock horn connected. I think the dual pitch works well. | ||

You know the "ellectropneumatic" horns are air horns too, right? The Grover install, as seen here with a larger compressor, air storage tank, and the long horns will lend itself to installation on some bikes. It would be too bulky for others though. Jack | ||

Rocket, I'd imagine that air horns, like all other acoustic instruments require certain physical dimensions to give the frequency and loudness desired. Hence the sizes you see. If size is a real concern, the Fiamm horns are small, and at ~130 db each, I can't imagine you'd need anything louder. | ||

That Stebel Nautilus Compact Series I linked to above is a dual tone air horn designed into a compact package. It is 125mm (4.9") wide, 112mm (4.4") high, and 78mm (3.1") deep. It speaks with 139dB, that should give it some authority and draw some attention. That's some strange page they have there: http://www.stebel.it/stebel/index2006.htm I can't figure out how to link to anything except the index. But if you click your way through the intro, then Products, then click on the Compact Nautilaus Series, you can see and hear it. Here is one on eBay, http://tinyurl.com/y7v5c8 just under $50 shipped. And I see it comes with a relay and a fuse. It needs a 20 Amp fuse, that is a fairly healthy little compressor. Almost looks like it would be suitable for my FXD... Sean, How much air do you think you can store in a tube frame? I'd think they could handle 2,000 PSI or so, that would let you do away with the compressor. Jack | ||

Let's face it, horns don't get that much use on a motorcycle anyway. That aside, a small compressor about the size of a motorcycles ignition coil but about half the length, feeding narrow bore twin horns about 3 maybe 4 inches long would be great for bike applications from an aesthetic and available space scenario. You could even mount the horns on the handlebars at that size. So why won't a small set of horns and compressor push enough air to make enough noise? I doubt they wouldn't would be my guess. Sean, I have a small Falcon horn that was sold for boating use some years ago. At the time you could also buy cans of Freon, screw the horn to the top, and it would meet all Coast Guard requirements for signaling. The cans of Freon were discontinued in the interest of saving the upper atmosphere though. I'm not sure what the pressure on the Freon cans was but I doubt that it was more than 10-15 PSI. The horn has some type of diaphram that holds the pressure rise and then unseats as it starts oscillating. Pretty high pitched and effective actually. I've looked for mini compressors a little but have not really found one yet. I'd think that with the newer PM DC motors and and starters that are on the market that that a small compressor with a lot of power would be in the market sooner or later. Maybe it's there and I've just not found it yet. As soon as I find the right compressor, I'm going to put a real loud Falcon horn on my FXD. The cagers will flinch when they hear it and say "Geez! What is that Falcon noise!". Do you know how to make a Thunderbird out of a Falcon? You feed it beans! Jack (Message edited by jackbequick on October 19, 2006) |
