For those of you that live in warmer climes: Has any of you tried to run without the Fake-tank cover on to see if this would aid in cooling that rear cylinder? I'm just trying to get everyones' creative juices flowing. It just seems that without that cover the air would certainly be able to flow up past the top of the rear cylinder for much better cooling. I'll take mine for a spin today without that cover and see what can be noticed. I've especially wanted to observe that muffler valve working and at what rpm it actually activates. I'll post my findings or lack of later today.

It would be interesting to see the valve work, but I don't really see the point regarding the cooling. If the bike's not overheating, why bother? If it's just to stop the "dreaded fan noise" just install the right-side scoop and call it good (for the record, I'm NOT suggesting that anyone install the scoop).

Of course, if you really want to get some more air to the rear cylinder, you could just take of the seat and ride standing up.

I put on the right side scoop and it helped a little with the dreaded fan noise, but switching to synthetic oil at the 4000 mile service made a huge difference with the fan. Seems like taking the cover off without the scoop isn't going to do all that much.

I switched to amsoil at 2000 miles last sunday, and the fan runs alot less. I have a Right side scoop on the way.

If you want to watch the servo actuate, then switch the bike on with the key, flip your run/stop to stop and back to run and the servo will cycle.

The synthetic oil made quite a difference in my fan usage as well. Still comes on (which I don't mind) but it takes longer and will actually shut off occasionally. That kinda freaked me out the first time it happened.

I have run mine without the cover several times. The first time I did it was going from a stock 06 box to the highly modified box,( and no cover) what a major increase in ZOOM-ZOOM. It is fun to watch the valve open.

Adrian,
At what rpm did your exhaust valve open? Mine never would open. It does when the motor isn't running and I flip the kill switch with full throttle but not out on the road with the engine running. I put a call in to the dealer about it and they said they would take out one of their Buells without the cover and see what happens. I took mine up to redline without seeing it budge.

The fan is truly fickle.

I changed to $10 a quart Mobil-1 V-Twin 20/50 at 1000 miles, did a TPS reset and was rewarded with no difference in fan operation characteristics.

So far the two biggest things, I've observed, that affect fan run characteristics are the Big Air right side scoop and free flowing exhaust.

I'm not doubting that synthetic oil has some effect, I just wonder how much is real and how much is placebo?

Walmart's 5 quart container of Mobil 1 15W50 was lowered from 28 to 23 bucks. That's way better than $10/quart of 20W50. Why waste your money????

When I was riding without the fake tank cover the intake noise was amazingly loud. Sounded like I had an open exhaust on a race bike. Now I know what that fake tank cover really is, an intake muffler. I don't know how loud it would have been without the extra holes I put in the airbox cover to simulate the 07 airbox cover but it really sounded cool. I kid you not, it is very loud.

Treadmarks,
Apparently making the valve work with the kill switch is not the same as the ECM sending a signal to open it during real time riding. Mine cycles with the kill switch but wouldn't open during my ride to see if it would open. I don't know if it ever has since I bought the bike. I'm waiting to hear from the dealer about it.

With the stock exhaust you can hear the difference in the exhaust note when the valve opens/cycles. It seems to depend on load on the engine and not RPM on mine. I have heard and felt the difference from 2700 RPM up to about 5500 RPM depending on whether I am behaving myself or not.
