I already gave you the options you deserve. If you missed those too, reread yet another post. WTF?? As you can see, I'm not the only one finding a big difference in it. I have the best idea yet. DON'T DO IT!! I 'm pretty sure there is a no guy standing next to you with a gun to your head saying he will shoot you if you don't. But if you are that desperate to be proven wrong, buy it and run the dyno tests under video surveillance, because I don't trust you at all, and then we'll compare it to Josh's findings. If there is no difference in the '06 and '07 on both sets of charts, I will pay you Daves cost of the airbox cover and you can ship it to me. I'll give it to another member who will be happy with it.

If I recall correctly, Al at American Sport Bike was wondering WTF Buell was doing with the '06 airboxes. It didnt seem to make sense to him, and I guess the '07 is an improvement. Extra holes in mine seemed to let the engine rev up a bit faster, but that is my butt dyno talking YMMV

Just drilled 4x 1-1/2" hole on left and 2x on front of my 2006 air box. Bike is stock. The bike seems to run cleaner and smoother off the bottom - not as much "snatchiness." It also has a nice intake honk now. I didn't, however, feel a huge improvement in overall power. Maybe a few extra ponies, as it seemed to rev a little quicker. I noted that some others that posted to this thread had done other mods first (Race ECM, Exhaust, etc.) before getting to the air box. These folks seemed to see the biggest gains. Makes sense to me.

Good Information.

I installed the American Sportbike open air box kit on my Uly with similar results. Cleaner acceleration, less off idle snatch, etc. The American Sportbike kit also plumbs the engine breather tubes to the atmosphere which , IMO is desirable to clean up the intake charge. I also reset the AFV and the bikes runs better than ever.

My Uly also has the race ECM and muffler. I have never experienced any pinging.

I ran 1377 miles last weekend with the air box "opened up". It ran flawlessly the entire trip. 703 miles Friday, 70 miles on the strip Saturday, 604 miles back. On the interstate when I ran 70 to 80 mph on a tank I got 45.8 mpg, running 80 to 90 and occasionally hitting 100 mph on a tank I got 41.2 mpg. Of course things vary, but this bike is awesome on the highway.

Teeps, just use a 1 or 1 1/4" spade bit and center your holes in the square plastic areas. Save yourself 34 bucks.

seat of the pants it feels smoother/less snatchy down low. 0-100 seems quicker..that might be in my mind after spending 4 weeks on the klr.

Don't think I haven't given that a though. I have access to all forms of tools to make holes in things. However, I refrain from making irreversible modifications on my bikes. But thanks for the thought.

i thought about it ,fubar. 90% of the time we have sunshine here in california. it's a negative air pressure area when moving,so i'm not real concerned. when i park it in the rain i'll throw a glove over the opening. if it doesn't work out i'll tape it up.

I did my trip to Fl on the interstate at speed, first two hours was steady rain. coming back the roads were wet for six hours, two of them it rained so hard cars were pulling over 'cause wipers wouldn't go fast enough. No ill effects at all. Uly ran great and was very stable in rain.

While at my BRAG event this weekend, I had to get the TPS reset for my 1000 Mile service. I decided to go ahead and get the '07 flash since it was free and I was there. I have to say get it. The one thing I noticed after switching airboxes was that my Gas mileage was way down. 43-45ish after compared to 48-50ish before. After the flash, it is way better that it has ever been. I'm seeing 55-60 now. I have to recommend that you guys with the open airboxes or '07 get the flash. I think the computer deals with the increased intake air better with it.

Buell has updated the software for the ECM's in '07 due to the change of the airbox. It is free from the dealer if you have the '07 box. They plug it in and reflash it to the new version. Takes about 5 minutes total for them to do.

Just stock as far as I know. The race ECM is programmed for lower restriction intake and exhaust so it should be fine as is.

My '07 airbox lid came in last week and on my race kitted Ulysesses with K&N, it does feel kind of peppy! It's a peppy performer or so the local police tell me. Keep your hands out of your pockets and remain with the motorcycle...

Had the bike in today for warranty repairs. Asked for the 07 flash. Of course they knew nothing about it and said digital tech told them nothing.

Jmhinkle, I have recently (one hour ago) altered my 06 airbox to replicate the 07. There is a noticeable increase in intake sound, however I did not notice any other improvements. Not that they aren't there. Weather, length of ride, temperature etc...all play a role.

My question regards "reflash." From what I know about the Buell xb12 motor (this is my second XB12) a "reflash" could logically only be a TPS reset or an AFV reset. Flashing the ECM as American Sport Bike or Daves does requires specific software that is not a "BUELL" product. These also require "keys" that unlock the ecm and allow it to be re-mapped. This all might be old news but I'd like some clarification. A fellow Bueller has the software to reset TPS/AFV. Both of these procedures can be done in about 5 mins. The AFV reset does require running the bike at a certain RPM for a certain amount of time to allow the ECM to re-learn. In my surface surveilance the 06-07 stock ECM has the same part #'s. So what say you?

I do feel that the 07 airbox or a modded replica is a very good modification if for nothing more than allowing the engine to eat cooler air. If any performance gains are noted among other users all the better. NUTS

Put my '07 cover on this afternoon, can't really tell if any more intake noise (Drummer), cool weather today here in SoCA so with RSS hardly any fan activity, and I'm finishing off a frame full of 100 octane a wild hair persuaded me to fill up with this a.m. ($6/gal...) so not ONE ping today (before the '07 install)...

The stock '06 cover does look a little ridiculous compared with the '07, you have to wonder what was behind the original design and why the sudden change after all these years.

I'll be able to compare better tomorrow with good old cheap 91 octane in the frame. But (maybe wishful thinking) it DID seem to idle smoother and pull away with less stumble.

Yes there is a true, new Flash for the ECM from Buell. Daves is probrably the best person to contact about where it might be for the service techs to find it. My dealer knew of it and did it no problem. I also had my TPS reset as part of my 1000 mile service, but that was after the Flash was done and not because of it.

Oddly I have found that a lot of the airbox "honk" went away with the '07 flash. Not sure why, but it still runs much better than the '06 box and my mileage is now up to. I might have another '07 airbox in my possesion for a much reduced price this week if someone is interested in one.
