Somewhere out there lurking is a person that I need to tell this to. I TOLD YOU SO!!! You know who you are!. Anyways, I'm glad you guys are realizing my enjoyment. As far as the flash, I ended up doing it for two reasons. Number 1 was because of what Electra said about fouling the plug. After my change, the bike ran amazing as you can see in the other post, but I noticed a significant drop in fuel mileage. I could only contribute 1 tank to being throttle happy from the change. Each successive tank was still much worse than original. I had to attribute it to over-fueling from the ECM. Running a little rich is nice, running way rich at 5300ft altitude leads to problems down the road. Reason number 2 was because I was at the dealer for a BRAG event so I had the opportunity to get it done by a person that had all ready done it. I'm glad I did. The bike runs just as great as after the box swap, but I'm getting even better mileage than pre box swap. Based on the non scientific experiments of a few, I would have to guess that the original ECM just doesn't have fueling tables to run with the '07 lid. There is a dramatic increase in airflow along with air density due to a change in intake temp. I believe the '06 ECM starts running on the ragged edge of full fueling dump unnecessarily. If you have a good dealer nearby, get the flash per Josh Cox's instructions if they need it. It really is a free upgrade, but you will have to pay for the labor which is 10 minutes max and I think the minimum is half hour charge usually.

Sean, thanks for taking the extra off my hands.

Birdman,

No reflash yet... Tried to get one two weeks ago the dealer told me there were no downloads available.

My MPG has been a consistant 46-48 since I got the bike. So we'll see what happens now with the new lid installed.

I replaced the race ecm with the stock one, and went back to the paper element. It felt like I was feeding it more than the stock exhaust could handle. I will slip a high flow pipe on this week and then switch back to the high flow filter and race ecm.

My dealer actually called Josh Cox and followed his instructions to do my ULY's recalibration of the ECM.

Hey Chrisb, please post your mileage after the first tank with the new lid. Thanks. My Uly is the best fuel mileage bike I've owned since my yamaha vision and KZ 400 got years ago. I hate to screw that up, but the new lid sounds like a great upgrade. Thanks,
Tim

I installed the 07 airbox about a week ago and my Uly runs way smoother with stock muffler and ECM, no reflash. My Uly has always pinged excessively. It was almost 80 today, and not a single sign of a ping. I'll keep my eye on the plugs but for now I'm so happy with things I'm putting my drummer on hold and leaving the race ECM I just got from Dave in the box.

I ordered my air box cover and K&N filter from Josh a couple days ago, hopefully will have them next week. Now the question is, has anyone put their bike on a dyno yet to see what sort of actual gains this combo gives?

Orange,
Check the color of your plugs. Extra air made mine black and fouled. Ran better up until it quit. So I got the reflash and 07' reflash is supposed to lean it back out but to be honest I haven't looked at the plugs since the reflash. Does run as if it leaned out though.

I don't like to argue with success; but the above does not make sense.

Unless there are some really wacky fuel tables that go into effect when the EFI system senses cooler (denser) air coming in. Not to mention the closed loop feedback; it's always trying to keep the air/fuel at 14 to 1. I don't understand how increasing the cold air intake could do anything more than make more power, at the correct a/f ratio.

Teeps..my thoughts exactly..you would think the system would balance itself out with the proper fuel/air mix. or at least be close... Mine has done fine, no flash, plugs light tan, run great. Good luck Electra you surely will solve the problems.

OK, n00b question here... how does the Buell FI system determine engine load? Most automotive systems have an algorithm to take TPS data and air flow data (such as might be generated by an AFM or MAF sensor) to calculate load and therefore fuel correction.

That might explain it. More airflow, the ECM's load calculation is thrown off, therefore adds more fuel? Wild shot in the dark.

I really don't know why my plugs decided to foul but circumstantially within 200 miles of opening up the airbox my engine started acting weird and my back cylinder quit firing. Black plug. Front was checked after I got the bike running with a new rear plug and it was very sooty also. Went and got the reflash.

Maybe its not sensing more airflow, but is confused by much cooler air flow?

If so, its adding more fuel than it was calibrated for at that throttle position and rpm and is making the mixture too rich in fuel; there fore the black sooty plug?

Installed the '07 air box cover today. Other than increased intake honk; and the fan coming on sooner, rather than later, compared to last couple of rides.
I can't say that I noticed any difference, via S.O.P. Dyno.

Go figure.

My S.O.P Dyno must be calibrated differently than yours. The extra "umph" is nice, but the smoother running RPMs are terrific.

Until someone runs some before and after dyno runs. Or "proper" drag strip times; I remain skeptical of the S.O.P. Dyno results.

After all Placebo is a wonderful thing. ; )
