First off, I love my Uly. It's the second Buell I have owned. I've had absolutely 0 problems with my other Buell, an '04 XB12R.

With that being said, I bought my '06 Uly about a month and a half ago. At 48 (yes 48) miles, it started running rough (idle between 1200-1300, sluggish throttle response, check engine light came on.) I continued to ride the bike that weekend (the dealership was closed.) I brought the bike in after the weekend, they looked at it, adjusted the TPS (which they attempted to charge me for) and sent me on my way. The bike was running fine for a while (about 1000 miles) and it started doing the exact same thing. I brought it back but this time they rode it 10 miles, couldn't find anything wrong with it, and sent me on my way. I just got back from 500 miles this weekend and it is still doing the same thing. The tech I talked to said "Buells are fickle." They have one more chance to fix it before it is a lemon under NC law.

Does anyone have any ideas? I have put a lot of extras into this bike already and don't want to have to start over with a new bike.

I'll be happy to get more specific for anyone who has some technical expertise.

Toxic,

If the light came on then there may be a historic code.

In order to retrieve trouble codes w/o software:

Get a short piece of 18 ga. wire about 12” long with two small insulated alligator clips. The manual uses part number 72191-94 (two of them) as end connectors instead of the alligator clips.

Go to the data link connector that is located on the left side just under the edge of the seat. Remove the rubber insert. There are four pins inside. Looking at the connector with the locking hasp pointed down. The pin orientation is such that pin # 1 and pin #2 are both on your left. See below:

#2 #3

#1 #4
lock

With the key and ignition off, connect pin #1 and pin #2 with the home made jumper. Make sure you do not touch the other pins! Then turn the key and the ignition on. Do not start the bike. The engine light should start to flash:

If it flashes many times (about 10 or 11, to fast to count for me) very fast, then there are NO trouble codes.

Otherwise there will be 6 quick flashes at 3 per second and this is an intermission.
Then there will be a 2 second pause
Then count the number of one second flashes separated by 1 second pauses and this will be your first digit.
Then there will be a 2 second pause
Then count the number of one second flashes separated by 1 second pauses and this will be your second digit.
Then there will be a 2 second pause
Start back at intermission of 6 flashes…………..and so on……..

This will continue until you turn off the ignition and the key and remove the jumper. If you remove the jumper without turning off the ignition the engine light will continue to cycle trouble codes.

If you have a trouble code and then you correct the problem that created the code. The bike will automatically clear the codes after 50 start and run sessions of at least 30 seconds or more. Until then the code will remain even if the problem is fixed.

Trouble code list:
11-TPS
13- O2 sensor
14-ET (engine temp)
15-air intake temp
16-battery voltage
21-exhaust actuator
23-front injector
24-front coil
25-rear coil
32-rear injector
33-fuel pump
35-tach
36-fan
44-bank angle sensor
52, 53, 54, 55- ECM failure
56-cam sync. Failure

Good luck. There is a more detailed account of this procedure in the shop manual. There is also flow charts to correct all of the fault conditions. This procedure has pulled codes that my VDSTS Pro USA did not pull. The VDSTS could clear them but it could not recognize all of them. I never leave home without my jumper wire, list of the codes, small box of fuses, electrical tape, and an extra relay. I hope this helps.!

I hate to say it. But it's God Damn sad if you have to ride around with all that extra stuff. I haven't had any issues with my Uly yet (just knocked on wood). But it will be a cold day in Hell when I carry wires, tape, fuses and anything else. That happens...the bike goes Bye-Bye.

Toxic - I know it's a little bit of a drive for you, but Lee (service writer) at Shelton's HD/Buell in Goldsboro seems to have a handle on the Buells. There is a really good tech there that has done all the work on Carlos' Uly, his name is Bud. It may be worth a call and trip to Goldsboro if you really want to keep the Uly and give it one last shot.

I just talked to Lee and he said call him and bring the bike in. He'd like to keep it, put some miles on it and see what the issue is. They will bring in other help if needed to correct the problem. He asked what type of problems you were having and I read him some of your post including what your local dealer told you. He kinda laughed and said "that's not what you say to a customer if you want to keep them and make them happy".

Lee - Shelton's HD/Buell in Goldsboro 919-731-2776. Good luck!

Kristi - you can call Carlos as well, 252-524-4430

sounds like a bad exhaust servo to me. mine failed twice with the same symptoms as yours. i switched to the race ecm to get away from the servo.

do the self test and make sure it's working. key on,engine off, full throttle, flip the kill switch from off to on. you should hear the servo cycle. take off the airbox cover to visually check it if you want.

Sounds like your local service department is the problem, not your bike.

Servos, fuel pumps, stators, voltage regulators, bank angle sensors, all go bad. A mediocre shop should be able to diagnose the problem. You have a bad shop.

My shop doesn't feel like they have really diagnosed or solved the problem until they have done 100 miles. If the problem occurs in less, great, but they don't just run it 10 miles and give it back. It takes a little longer, but it makes a difference.

Try a "good" shop even if it's a few miles away. Good servicing makes the difference between a good bike experience and a bad one. Even if you get another bike under the NC Lemon Law, you will still be dealing with a bad service department.

if you are going to attempt to "lemon law" it DO NOT WORK ON IT YOURSELF!

Find a good shop and have them fix it.

Have you called Buell Customer Service?

If not, call and ask for Alan. They have the ability to bring tremendous resources to the problem quickly.

Toxic - Call Lee, you are not the first Bueller having problems with their bike that Shelton's has fixed the first time. Aydenxb9 had major throttle problems with his Blast and was about ready to junk it because the selling dealer could not figure out what was wrong with it. He finally took it to Shelton's and they fixed the bike the first time. It ran perfectly the rest of the time he owned it.

You have probably read where allot of people are complaining about pinging problems. My Uly did too when I first got it. During the 1000 mile service they worked on it, reset the TPS and retimed the bike, even in 102°F temps the bike will not ping.

The Goldsboro store had only one Buell on the floor the last time I was there because they are about sold out of Buells. The Smithfield and Durham stores have been selling the entire chain about out. So even though you do not see the Buells on the floor, John the General Manager (Owned a XB9S and wants a Uly) and Lee the Service Manager know their Buells.

Thanks for the inputs all, i really appreciate the support here.

Since I live in Fayetteville, I have no "local" dealer, closest I get is a 2 hour drive. I talked to the service manager. He is sending a truck down to pick the bike up and will be "personally involved" with the work on my bike. He seems genuine and I'm giving them one last chance with this. I'll probably give a call to Buell customer service as well, see if they can't bring in some sort of reinforcements to this struggle.

I'll let everyone know how this goes and hopefully I won't have this happen again.

Definitely call Customer Service and ask for Chuck Kennedy or Alan Ball. This is abnormal and certainly can be fixed quickly if the right folks are involved.

I got a whole new tank and fairing on an R100RS once, just because the clearcoat was peeling in a couple places. Not a repaint: a whole new set of parts.

That was years ago though.

Update

I picked it up on Saturday. They replaced the engine temperature sensor; they think that was the problem all along. For whatever reason, when it messed up previously, it didn’t set a maintenance code…sounds odd. If it messes up again, I’ll take it to Shelton’s for its last chance. After that, I don’t know what I’m going to do.

Halloween update:

So it's been 300 miles since they replaced the ETS. It had been running more smoothly (although it still is not as strong as my 04 Firebolt) until yesterday when the check engine light came on and did not go out. I called the General Manager of the dealership and he wanted his one last chance to fix it. While talking, HE was the one that brought up the lemon law info and seems very motivated to keep me as a customer, telling me that if this last repair fails and the MoCo won't accept a lemon settlement, he would do everything he can to rectify the situation. He even suggested a swap for an '07 Uly on the floor at the dealership.

If you expect to go through life with no adversity, you will complete your journey with nothing but broken expectations.

Look at it this way, you have a customer building a personal relationship with a dealer due to the combined experience and working through the issues.

You might just end up with a great outcome and a lifelong relationship.

Not everything is just a consumer/seller relationship. Sometime you are just doing life with someone else.

Naw, I think bastardness is an equal opportunity affliction. My best friend has had lots of times when she didn't think much of me either.
