I know that you guys are going to say "No shit, Sherlock", but I switched from 89 octane gasahol to 91 octane premium and my bike does run better. Here's a question for Davo. The service manual says that the bike is supposed to have the wheel rotated in 5th gear to check the timing. Should I pull the plug wires since it also says the kill switch should be in the "on" position? I don't want the possibility of the engine firing over since the injector, I believe, is going to spray gas and then the plug is going to fire. What do you think, is this a worry?? I wouldn't even being asking this question if the plug wires weren't such a bitch to get to. My electraglide is so much easier. |

Anecdotally, I did the procedure, plug wires connected, without the engine firing. The rear wheel was off the ground though... so it would not have been a problem if it did light off. |

Cant you get 95 or 98 octane in the states ? Lowest I can get here in the netherlands is 95. My bike does not ping in any weather. I'm not that technical but I read so much about pinging Buells on this forum that it looks like it must be that low octane sh*t you have over there. just my 2 euro cents. |

Euro and US octane ratings are computed differently. I think there is another thread up somewhere with some good info on the differences, but US = (R+M)/2 while IIRC, the Euro rating is the Research (R) value. |

Two methods of reporting octane rating are RON (Research Octane Number) and MON (Motor Octane Number) USA uses the average (RON + MON)/2. In Australia and Europe our 91 octane would be US 87, Our 95 US 91. I'm using 98 RON in my bike without any pinging symptoms at all. |

I run 92 or 93 octane US, and the bike does not ping. I did have the bike retimed during the 1000 mile service. At 14,300 miles the bike still does not ping. |

http://www.buell.com/om/99477-06Y_en/file-3.asp#hdtopic000014 I'd think that running less than the required 91 (RON+MON)/2 or 95 RON fuel would void the warranty should any detonation related issues arrise, unless you are in the mountains or higher elevations where the significantly thinner (less oxygen, less combustion chamber pressure) precludes the need for higher octane fuel. For instance I don't think you can even find higher than 89 (RON+MON)/2 fuel in Denver, Colorado. |

I am able to find 91 octane pretty regularly in the Denver area... no pings here. |

Electroglider1997, Sorry for the late reply but I have been fishing and was away from the lap top. It is not necessary to pull the plug wire if you proceed slowly. I usually check static timing on the ground and I just move the bike very slowly to make sure it doesn't fire. It helps to have a second person watch for the mark if you are pushing the bike. |
