Just got back from a 3500 mile trip from Chicago to Houston on my 06 Uly. Great ride thru the Ozark Mountains on MO 19. All day road race it is.

Anyhow noticed the rear shock shaft looking wet at about 10k miles. Kept an eye on it and it got worse and worse. It was puddling up at the lower shock mount. After about a week, no more oil. Figure it pumped it all out thru the seal.

Funny thing is the shock did not completely lose control. It still had quite a bit of function when riding tame but difinitely feel it at hard sport riding level.

Got home, now showing 12K on the odo, drove to the dealer before washing the bike to show them, hoping to avoid any delays because of parts not available. They agreed it should be covered and said they would get one on order so when my appointment came up in 3 weeks, they would have it to install.

Took it in yesterday, got a call. Bike would not be ready for 7 days cause they don't have a shock! I was PO'd.

They checked into why the shock was never ordered and called me back. Found out from their warranty adjuster that the shock has to be removed and sent in to Harley first for warranty evaluation before they can authorize and ship a replacement?!?!

Can you believe that? So now I am out of a bike for at least 7 days and there ain't that many riding days left up here.

So much for trying to prevent delays.

Anyone else have leaking shock seals?

Yep. I blew mine about 6 months ago. I wanted a little more adjustability, so I picked up an aftermarket Penske shock to replace it with. I got 22,000 miles out of the factory shock. Not too bad, but I love the Penske.

Wow, I've bottomed my rear shock numerous times and after 28k miles it still works great.

Some might say I am not all that nice to my bike either. (I've off-roaded it quite a lot)

I've blown out the left fork seal and it was fixed under warranty. (it made a BIG mess).

This is the first time I've heard a catastrophic failure of a Uly rear shock.

I blew out my rear shock in the Baja by the second day! Plus bent both rims, and wore out the rear tire.

But it was sooo worth it! I've been back 3 times since.

Cygnus_x1,

did you have to go up against the "review board" like their making me do? Or did they just replace the shock without involving the factory? Just curious.

Ha! Thats funny! (kinda) No J/K not having your bike sucks.

Our dealer said no problem, and had one within a couple of days, they replaced it, and we tried to straighten out the rims as good as we could. Plus they detailed my bike when it was done.

Here is my Baja report;

No I took the quads back the second time, and my new Polaris Ranger the third time, and a truck down somewhere in between.

Cygnus_x1,

Well done dude. You don't mess around I take it.

Fairly new bike, new to riding, no dirt experience and you dive right into Baha with experienced riders. Ride on man.

LIve is nothing if not an adventure.

Yep. They installed it yesterday. They also replaced the front brake rotor which felt warped even though it spec'd out. Tech said it was "hot spotted".

Thanks for the support on that Dave. Wish I could have bought my Uly from you.
