So this is the company that makes the Uly side and top cases. They sell them at twistedthrottle.com for a heck of a lot cheaper than I can get them from a dealer. The only difference is the bags don't say "Buell" on them. The only problem I am having is figuring out what rack system to place on the bike to incorporate the bags. The H&B website doesn't even mention Buells. Anyone have any ideas?

The Buell racks are only available from Buell.

Ok, so any other ideas? I don't feel like paying almost twice as much for these bags all because they have a Buell sticker on them.

Twisted throttle lists the HB "Buell" side bags for about $500 with no mounting system. If the Buell set is about $700 with mounts (so $200 for the mounts) that seems totally reasonable to me. I might be missing something though, fill me in, where did you get that the bags from Buell are 2x as much as from Twisted Throttle?

I added the topcase, which is only $150 on twistedthrottle. price, minus mounts, $750, compared to $1125 for the full 3-bag system from Buell. so it was about $375 different. where did you get $700 for the buell set? I find the MSRP at $799 for the two bag set alone...all in all, if i can find some way to mount these, I'll save about $200 easy. the buell logo, while nice, isn't worth that much to me.

The Buell bags went up $100 this year. Not sure why.

Fair enough...still looking for a solution to the rack question though...also, i'll probably get the TC 50 topcase, instead of the TC 40 (buell version). it's bigger, and only 50 bucks more.

I guess the side bag sets were 700 last year 799 this year, thanks for clarifying Windrider.

Toxic, Dave S. could save you some $ on the Buell set-up.

I just don't see how you're going to get quality mounts cheap enough to justify the effort. As you said, it's not really 1/2 the price; you might be able to save $200 on the 3-bag set by getting them from someone other than Buell. If you can do it, post it up, I'm sure some other guys would like to save the $ too, because as you said, the bags are identical except for the Buell logo. Good luck.

Happy-Trail has pannier mounts and bags for the Uly.

So does Touratech, but you wont save any $.

Daves in Appleton - you save 10%, they are delivered to your door and your get customer service after the sale.

Sometimes savings on the front end, ends up costing you in the end.

I appreciate all the "advice" but seriously, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas. Unless Buell has developed a rack system that is truly $400, I'm not sacrificing anything by buying the exact same bags without the Buell logo on it. I do not believe that just because something comes directly from a manufacturer that it is always "the best." If I find anything, I'll let everyone know.

Find a part number for just the racks (top/sides) & I’ll see what I can do. HD will have a part # for the racks. Insurance companies do not like to replace things that are not broken. Example, bent rack from accident however top case is just fine. Buy the entire kit or just replace rack? They will buy the rack.

Toxic,

You started out by saying that Buell wanted twice as much for the HB bags as Twisted Throttle (though you don't have a price with mounts from TT, because they don't exist). You're also comparing an assumed amount for a non-existent mounting system versus full retail for the Buell parts (which you dont have to pay).

All due respect, but you did get ideas. You just don't like them.

Idea 1: Don't bother trying to find cheaper mounts and seperate bags, because the Buell package is a pretty good deal.

Idea 2: Call Dave S. at Appleton and save $ on the factory Bags/mounts kit making it a better deal.

Idea 3: Happy-Trail has racks, use other bags.

Idea 4: Touratech has racks, use other bags.

The question is not the HB bags. Agreed that they are same-same. No problem, buy the cheapest ones you can find. When the latch breaks, you loose the key, or the seal falls out - just don't call your Buell dealer, and don't count on Bruce Champion over-nighting a new part.

The issue is the racks. Which, if you can find them somewhere else, are apparently still going to cost about as much as the Buell parts.

Oh, and by the way Toxic, I’m with you bro. I see no honor in over paying for anything. My factory Garmin GPS system cost 300. Guess what? The only difference is mine does not say Buell on it. Thinking outside the box can save you heaps of cash that you can use to buy a spiffy Buell jacket or helmet with.

Hey Jeffs, knock yourself out arguing with me here, but I just asked a simple question..."does anyone know about a rack I can use?" That question still hadn't been answered (Whitj's response excluded.) Thank you for breaking this thread down into a reader's digest version for me though, as if I was a retard. And FYI, I have yet to see ANY rack system that would run me $400, so excuse me if I don't want to be beholden to someone because of a corporate logo. If I was that guy, I wouldn't have gotten a Buell in the first place.

Thanks Whitj. Nice to see I'm not alone in the world.

I don't think anyone argued that he should over-pay for the bags. The question really is: Is the Buell set over priced? (with appropriate discount from Dave S., factory support etc.) I say it's not over priced, and there are no other options of better VALUE. You could try the Happy-Trail racks and Givi bags, nice setup but about the same $. I priced them all before I bought my Buell set. Shop on...

Dude. Read the post, HAPPY-TRAIL and TOURATECH are other racks that you can use. You said that you were looking for ideas, there were obvious ideas that you apparently missed, so I broke them down for you. Having done this when I bought my bags, I was trying to help you out. WTF? I'm Done...

Jeffs, leave my thread. I don't need my intelligence insulted by you. Of course I saw the happy-trail and touratech ideas. You started out argumentative, and you have kept it up. I don't need you to tell me to buy the Buell stuff just because you did. Over $1100 is overpriced for 3 bags, period.

Toxic,

You cannot purchase the brackets separately. I tried doing that for a customer who wanted to purchase the bags from TwistedThrottle.com. I called twisted throttle and HB, they do not make the brackets, Buell does. You can only get the brackets in the kit. They are not available alone. Sorry about the issue.

I still have three sets I bought before the price increase. They retailed at $999.95. I will offer my standard 10% BadWeb discount so they are only $899.95. The current retail is $1,124.95 so the BadWeb price after I sell these is $1012.45. There you go, and extremely fair deal where you can save $225 off of the current retail price : D.

PM or email me at jcox@cycleconnectionh-d.com if you are interested.

Toxic, maybe you can find someone (like me) with the Buell bags that'll loan you the mount so you can have it copied. If you've got friends in low places this just might be the trick. Personally I would rather have purchased another system but it's kinda hard to work that into the financing at HD. I have to admit the warranty from Buell does give me some peace of mind. My Uly went down twice while we were at the Dragon and the bags held up admirably. Matter of fact I don't see much use in riding without them; they certainly don't interfere with ground clearance! I don't think that you are going to beat the Buell price by much if any. I would see if you find a set of HB mounts for anything and adapt them to the Ulysses. Aren't the HB bag mounts on the Twisted throttle site for other bikes $300+??
Touratech also sells just the pannier rack kit which looks like it will work with the HB hags, but I'm not too sure ityhet are going to position the bags correctly between the turn signals and the passenget pegs...
http://www.touratech-usa.com/shop/show.lasso?SKU=051-0120&-session=touratech:2DE CE6F326FD88E196D6636BAB5C292B
THey also sell universal rings that you could weld up to a frame.

The HB bags are a tight fit on the Uly, just clearing the signals, and giving just enough leg room for passengers...

Hey toxic I had the same problem. DaveS got me the side mounts for about $200.00. The only problem is they won't sell the topcase rack unless you had one and broke it. DaveS said to get the topcase rack for a guy he had to send in pictures of the wrecked bike. So this is do-able. Besides the topcase is fugly anyway. I love my HB cases, and the fact I stuck it to the dealer who said it wasn't possible.

Thanks for all the feedback. Got some serious ideas now. I'm very frustrated at the lack of aftermarket so far for the Uly, but I suppose it is still young and I just need to give it time.

Toxic .. just wait a while,,after market brackets will prob be produced in the near future and if so you might want to look at different bags. Top loaders seem to be more durable.. For now check into a Seal line dry portage bag and bungees

Toxic,

Yes, the Uly is new and there aren't a lot of options on the market yet.

Several of the Badwebbers were asking Roger at Adventure Motorcycles to come up with his solution for the Ulysses. This looks nice to me. Hopefully, he will have it out for the Uly by Spring. Still costs right around $700 for the frame and two panniers.

I found no better deal than the Buell bags (no topcase, don't like 'em) from DaveS. Or, apparently, Josh_cox. IMHO you made a good choice.

I'll pay a little more to get Bruce Champion-level customer support; over time cheap can be more expensive. But in this case I did not have to.
