I think my fan has given up the ghost. I'll keep riding the bike to make sure. The heat doesn't bother me, and doesn't seem too excessive. The bike won't ever see a parade  Plus, the Winter riding season is just around the corner. I hate the idea of leaving the bike for a replacement. I'll call the dealer and ask if I can ride it in, wait while the fan is replaced, then ride out. If that's not possible, do I really need the rear fan? Also, is this something covered under warranty? Thanks. | ||

Idave, If the engine gets too hot a light will come on in the instrument panel and the ECM will do funny things to your timing. You will know. I have never had this happen but I read about it in the manual and I think someone posted here about it happening to them. That said, the rear cylinder is really tucked up in the frame and I would imagine that the fan is quite important to keep it cool. You might get away with it for short distances in cool weather but why take the risk? | ||

I don't want to risk serious damage. I also don't want to leave my beloved Uly in the hands of strangers  Just hoping this can be a ride in, ride out fix. For those who have had theirs replaced, did you have to leave the bike overnight? Thanks. BTW, my bike hasn't gotten hot to the point of the light coming on. | ||

if the bike is still under warranty and it should be then the fan is covered. Have them order the fan and then call you when it is in. Then take it in for them to replace it. The fan is only about 70.00 if you want to just order it and do it yourself to save the downtime waiting for an appointment. | ||

Just talked to Jeff at WinchesterHD. Super nice guy in the service department I've known for several years. He ordered me a new fan and will schedule the replacement in a week or two once the new fan arrives. He says I can schedule the service for 9AM when they open, and wait several hours, then ride out. Fortunately, the temps are dropping in VA, so I'll ride the bike unless I start getting the overheating light. The bike is warranted until 3/31/08. I'll probably have Jeff reset the TBS at the same appointment. I have 4500 miles on it now. Of course, I've only owned the bike 2.5 weeks  Time to change the oil to synthetic. | ||

From what I can gather (and it's hard to come by hard facts,) I think the fan is there to protect the oil. As others have said, the ECM will start shutting down the bike if the cylinder gets too hot. I don't think you will hurt the bike by running it w/o the fan, but I don't think you can run 10,000 miles between oil changes either. Of course you probably don't do that anyway. | ||

No, I'm pretty much on top of the oil changes. My bike isn't scheduled for an oil change for another 1000 miles, but I'm switching to synthetic, and just want the stuff in there 'now.' Of course, my wife's been bugging me to change the oil in her CRV for the last several weeks. I get a 'roundtuit.' | ||

I believe Buell calls for 5000 mile oil/filter change intervals. That seems too long, even for synthetic... Maybe Buell feels justified in specifying longer intervals because of the benefits of the fan cooling??? | ||

It's pretty standard these days. Based on analysis of the oil, shear strength, blahdyblahblah. The one thing I don't like is dirty oil, even if it lubes. Oil is cheap, and I change it often. ALL our bikes see 'severe use'. | ||

IDave, Changing the fan won't take too long for them to do. It can all be pulled out and replaced in a little less than an hour the last time I did it (I was actually changing an 02 sensor, but decided to go through the fan hole instead of rotating the engine). BTW major props to your thread on ADV! I sat at home and was trapped in front of my laptop for almost two hours. Care to share what camera your using? Josh | ||

I believe Buell calls for 5000 mile oil/filter change intervals. I think thats correct for some of them. For the Uly it's 10,000. I don't know about the rest of the 06 bikes. That seems too long, even for synthetic... Thats 10,000 on dino oil. | ||

10k for the trans, 5k for engine oil. Assuming you don't do any "severe" riding. |
