Why is is that the Ulysses can't use the translucent Orange wheels off an XB? I couldn't find any data in my searching just the official Buell statement of all XB's excluding XB12X. Does it have something to do with not being tested offroad or is it a fitment issue? | ||

The Uly wheel is different from the other XB wheels. It has been strengthened for offroad use. I do not know if there is a fitment issue as well. | ||

Hardcorps, That is exactly why I was asking. I want those exact wheels on my Uly, but wanted to know what risk I was taking by doing so or if they would not fit at all. Does anyone know where the strengthening is on the Uly wheel? They sure do look like normal XB wheels. | ||

Jmhinkle, In the Cycle World article on the Uly when it was first introduced, I believe they stated that the Uly wheels just have a little more "meat" in the rim, and IIRC both wheels start from the same casting. The difference is in the finish machining. I can't imagine that they're not interchangeable with standard XB wheels. | ||

To my knowledge, the wheels are the same SIZE, but not the same strength. If you are not doing any off-roading, I can't imagine there would be a problem. If you are trying to do the true dual-sport thing, and do a lot of off-roading, I would be cautious. (Message edited by toxic on September 20, 2006) | ||

XBX wheel has more meat in the rim area. This "meat" is machined off of the regular XB wheels. They should fit with no issue. | ||

ULY wheels were beefed up because of denting problems with the XB wheels. Slightly heavier. | ||

No, they were beefed up to handle the offroad stuff a Uly is likely to go thru. Regular XB wheels will fit your Uly but will not like offroad. | ||

I have dented my Uly rim so bad it leaks air. If you go off road you want nothing less than the Uly rim. | ||

Our road race bike is based on a 2006 Uly and has a stock XBR rear wheel fitted with no problems. The front would also fit straight into the uly forks (If we still had them that is!). If you are not going off road (and who in their right mind would!) then the stock XB wheels will serve just as well. I think Buell only say that because they don't want to get sued by he first person to fit a set of XBR wheels and then break them in their local arena cross circuit. | ||

I pose this question then. What do you guys consider off road? I live off road, but it is a fairly smooth, graded regularly type of off road. It usually gets some ruts and washboards by the end of the week, but I see people with Goldwings, Ninja's and choppers ride on it, albeit a slower pace than I do. Is that too much for them? Brad, what did you do to bend a rim? Are normal fire roads out of the question then? I see other people ride normal bikes on these roads, are the normal XB wheels weak or just not up to cliff-jumping type of hits? Joel | ||

I think you'd be fine on your road with the regular XB wheels. Make sure your tires have air in them. I would not take regular XB wheels where they may encounter large rocks,holes or trees. | ||

If you're wanting to switch for purely cosmetic reasons, why not have the Ulysses wheels powdercoated or painted?? Might even be cheaper than replacement wheels. |
