Anyone had this happen?

Ideas?
Thanks

Peace
Milo

Holy rusted muffler Batman!

Looks like that is not the original muffler, right?

Maybe it is not mounted properly, or why they have the outlet on the other side of the Uly.

OR, maybe when that one got mounted they did not use new straps?

All guesses, but I would say that the muffler being in the wrong place is way more likely than the pully being in the wrong place.

Dang, how did your race exhaust rust so much? I hope my race can doesn't end up like that. Wonder if Buell will warranty a rusted race exhaust?

Muffler is factory race. Properly installed by me, last June. Bike was in for sidestand recall last month. Near as I can tell, muffler was re-installed correctly. Not a lot of play once the header is in the hole. I suppose that something could be mis-located.
But, I have'nt had it up on the lift yet.

Peace

When did it start rubbing?

I would not think a proper install would include the pully rubbing, but that is just me??

Can you see it hitting? If not I would think the muffler is sliding around in those one time use (as defined by Buell) straps....

I am not trying to bash the install, just stating what should be obvious.

Another thought or tow, since I reread and you said it was not loose.

Maybe something got up between the pulley and the muffler and did that, or they did that when they did the sidestand install somehow?

Man, I can't get over how awful that exhaust looks....

Birdmanrh, I just noticed the spot yesterday, while moving the bike around, to clean out the garage.
Has'nt been ridden since labor day weekend.
1000 miles on that trip.
Did'nt notice anything rubbing.
As far as the dirty muffler....I bought the bike brand new last October, guess I've been slack on washing it. :-)

LOL, just looks used! Good for you!

If it isn't rubbing that you notice I would just watch to see if it continues.

Heck, rub some dirt on it and you will see quickly if the mark re-appears!

The more I look at the photo, the more it looks very fresh and not a repetitive type mark. But heck, it is just a photo.

Stock Uly mufflers and pulley's have very little clearance. My understanding is the "Race Kit" was never designed for the Uly as it has a longer muffler than stock XB's. Horses for courses but seriously I'd spend the $50 on new straps and see if I could get Buell to warranty that rusty can. Only because I read someone else was successful doing so. I wouldn't want that rubbing to cause tension bearing failure while on the bike. NUTS

Since the pulley is fixed, and the muffler is fixed, my guess it happened when they did the sidestand.

... I'd suspect bad alignment of the muffler ... mounting straps were never replaced.

Yours looks as though it's rotated more than mine?
