At the risk of starting a war here, I would like some of your opinions about tires and what the individual capabilities are. I am not an aggressive driver and am interested in balancing longevity with traction. So let the games begin, and thank you all for your help. T3 | ||

I'm not aggressive either (anymore  ) so I like the D616 Dunlops, except for the front's CA raingroove interaction. Would have gotten 8k on the first rear, got punctured tho at 7k-something so I replaced it. Coming up on 9k this weekend and it still looks unworn. They're getting hard to find though, so I'll probably go to the Pirelli Syncs next change. | ||

Avon Azaro AV45/45. Stick well on both wet and dry pavement. Last a long time. I don't know for sure, but I suspect they wouldn't be a good dirt tire. I've got them on my Uly. | ||

At work perfectly good stuff gets destroyed as a matter of policy. It breaks my heart to see this stuff go to the grinder, but absconding with it is grounds for termination. I am one of the few that like the stock D616. However, as has been stated, they were very hard to find a couple of months ago, I am not sure about now. I will probably switch to the Perrili Syncs next time around. The Shinko's Teeps is linking to, a friend of mine has a set on his SV650 and seems to like them. | ||

Shinko (a Korean company) bought Yokohama and is now making tires under their own name. The tires are D.O.T. approved so I don't care where they are made. For the $ it's worth a try. Teeps, the Koreans are ok by me. Got their heads in the right place, make my Buell Redline helmet, and I like the new Hyundais. So they bought up Yokohama? That's a major deal IMO. I have ridden the D616s to death and now have the Pirelli Scorpion Syncs. I prefer the Syncs in every situation. I think that they make the bike more stable and they seem better in sand and loose dirt. Not sure yet on longevity. My Dunlops D616s only went 4.5K miles. My 2 cents. Full face value. | ||

Wore out 2 rear dunlops in 7,500 miles, now got a Perrili Sync on the rear. Rear end feels generally better with the Sync, much better grip. Still got the original dunlop on the front at 9,200 miles. | ||

I have Michelin Pilot Roads on my ULY. After 1,500 miles, very good ride, great traction, much more 'planted' to the road than the Dunlops were. I took the 616's off at 4K miles, and they probably could have gone another 4K miles. | ||

I have about 5k on a set of the Shinko ravens. The front is cupping, but the rear still has a lot of life left in it. Not very sticky compared to the dunlops, but a decent budget tire. | ||

I really like my Avon Azaros. I have never felt them let go. They stick very well and are confidence inspiring in the wet. I hope they mileage is good. I have about 1000 on miles so far. | ||

I'm hoarding 616's. I've got two sets in reserve sitting in the garage. I've also got three more on backorder at M.A.W. I'll be disapointed when they are no longer available.  | ||

Our local (Pinellas Park) Cycle Gear store had a set of D616's on the shelf when I was in there last week. | ||

I just bought the last set on the shelf of 616's from the Cycle Gear in Auburn, WA yesterday. They said there will be more in Oct. M.A.W. has been pushing the date out for 2 months now. The guy at Cycle Gear said they are trying to stock them in their warehouse but they are out. Motorcycle Accessory Warehouse sells them for about $100 per pair less than the H-D dealer. (even Daves told me he can't even come close to the prices on 616's from mail order outfits). BTW, Cycle gear is about $25 more than mail order. I get them delivered to my door for $220 a pair when mail ordering. | ||

If Shinkos aren't as sticky as 616s, I'd be hesitant to use them. I don't find the 616s to be all that sticky. Not bad, but sticky? nope. Ditto the rain groove thing with 616s. That alone makes me want to never use them again. | ||

I can't address longevity yet but the Scorpion Syncs stick to pavement VERY WELL at hard lean angles. | ||

My next set will be tomahawks. I have a friend who is on the third set, gets about 8k out of them, and he likes them a lot. At 119.00 a pair, I think I will like them also. I used a set on my beemer, and they were better than the shinko tires I am using now. | ||

Why does anyone change tires? Folks seem to get all excited when they find out Tomahawks are "remanufactured" tires. I got tired of the lectures about all the "retread" carcasses laying along the highway. 99 percent of those tires came apart because they were under inflated, not retreads. I have news for them, every time an airliner lands with their butt in the seat, it is hitting the ground on tires "remanufactured" the same way. The Sport compound Tomahawks are stickier than the Shinkos, and the front never cupped like the Shinko is doing after 5k miles. Some time back, Yokohama used to make kick butt race tires. When I heard that Shnko bought their molds and presses, I was hoping they would make the same tires. | ||

Wow those thawks look interesting. looking hard at the T3 with the sport/miles formulation on a diablo base. I am kindof wondering about all that extra weight. While weight means more rubber which means more miles for a given formulation, which is good. But Erik, Et Al spent a whole lot of effort reducing unsprung weight and I don't have enough experience in such things to predict the effects of going off and increasing it. Would I notice it as an average rider? Would it disrupt the geometry or balance of the forks/shocks? thanks T3 | ||

Seriously, retreads do carry a stigma. I had no idea of the current technology. I remember when belted auto tires first hit the scene we were advised to "go easy" first 100 miles to ensure their integrity! And I did have an 18-wheeler blow a 'cap right next to me one night on I-5. Felt like I was in a B17 over Germany in 1944, VW rocked with the blast and pelted with chunks, needed NO coffee rest of the trip! This thread has taken an interesting twist with this info, I'm definitely checking this out. | ||

Has anyone a favorite for off road use? Fire roads mostly with some mud and creek crossings tossed in. My 616's are approaching their exit and with the news of them being hard to find I need to be on the ball this time. Can anyone say the Syncs are as capable off road as the 616's are? I actually like the 616, it gripped remarkably during my Deals Gap trip. NUTS | ||
