Has anyone tried the Trojan Horse or similar gear reduction, as per their ad, "This kit will give your XB12 much more acceleration at the expense of just 10% in top speed. It will give the bike the equivalent of the old US 29/61 gearing for the Tube frame models! No need to adjust the speedometer either. Saves weight over stock parts." I'm after a lower, more tractable first gear ie, not having to ride the clutch to negotiate trees etc on bush tracks! |

Yes, You can install the 34 tooth XB9 primary drive sprocket and chain. I did this on my Lightning and already have the parts on order for my Uly. I would recommend getting the alternator rotor w/the drive sprocket rather than the sprocket only, as the magnets have a tendency to break loose when the sprocket is pressed out. You'l need a primary gasket, an o ring for the clutch cable and the usual items for servicing the primary and adjusting the chain. This is probably the cheapest bang for the buck and feel the change you can get. As well the speedo stays accurate. Thanks, Ed |

Howdy! I also had my Ulysses Primary Ratio changed to the XB-9 (Sportster 883) ratio. For me it works great. The extra "Grunt" provided by the lower gearing is a "Perpetual Smile Generator". Driving in stop and go traffic is excellent with the lower ratio. Driving in town and in parades is a cinch, too. I will never miss the loss in top speed. I seldom miss the taller gearing while cruising, as I avoid main highways and slabs. With the lower gearing, 60 MPH = 3250 RPM, 70 MPH = 3800 RPM. Maximum speed, which on Buells is limited by the Rev Limiter, and is not limited by Horse Power, will be reduced from about 138 MPH to about 122 MPH. The parts for the Primary Gearing change were about $195 USD. I could be off a bit, but that is pretty close. Motor Sprocket Assembly Part Number 32493-02 was $114, Primary Gasket Part Number 25352-00YA was $15.85 and I THINK that the Primary Chain was about $65. Have fun! |

great - only question is, what does a '9' rider do if they'd like to drop the gearing similarly? I'm seriously considering the DIY chain swap, but keeping the belt, and not having to futz with lube, etc is SO much nicer... |

asdf: thanks for the link, and not to detract from any of our vendors, but for those prices ( and the amount of work involved in changing the primary gears)I can manage the do-it-yourself chain conversion , and be able to swap ratios for on & off road with ease! if you havent seen the DIY setup, heres a link to the thread : http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/142058.html?1147956988#POST5 03082 |
