Got a call from Chandler, they were going to install a kit they were "saving for someone else" on my bike. In and out in an hour. Chad: If you haven't called Buell yet, do it. I credit Buell with getting this taken care of.

Cheers

I finally got around to calling my dealer last week about the recall. The nice recall lady called Buell and gave them my vin; she called me Monday to say the parts were in. I dropped it off this morning for the recall and a 4000 mi full service. The only glitch was that they had an '07 XB12R out front, black with red wheels, and now I MUST have it...but I think there's room in the garage next to the Uly.

So, the kits are in fact readily available??? Heidi at CS said they were still wave shipping. The previous rep 'red flagged' a kit for me to let the dealer know it has my name on it when it arrives. Not a peep.

I'm going to a different dealer tomorrow, maybe if a call and a fax it what it takes, (why does it take a third party online forum to disseminate this information?) then maybe it'll get done before the Buellton BBQ.

I still haven't heard from my dealer after conference calling with Buell Customer Service and the dealer last week.

I have probably wasted 2 hours total and about a half dozen phone calls on this recall now and have nothing to show for it.

I am still underwhelmed.

So, I had my bike apart getting the header ceramic coated.

I called the dealer three times and asked if it would be OK to bring the bike in without the muffler (on a truck) so they could do the recall. They said yes all three times. (Two time were not the service manger)

I took the bike in, and proceeded to be told by some spiked haired kid that they needed to do the whole thing and they could not do it. (Got a little pissed and told him I had called three times)

After 10 minutes of checking to "see" if they could do it, they decided to do the job. Told me to take the truck around back.

A hour and a half later after having to unload the bike and wait around I got it back and they handed me what I thought was just the muffler strap and clamp...

Tonight I got my header back and started putting everything on. As I started to lay parts out a bag with the new bolts fell on the floor!

After all the BS at the dealer they did not even put the new bolts on! At least they gave them to me and I was able to do it??????

Needless to say, that was my last trip to that dealer.

Yes, it was Chandler!

I called my dealer Wed to inquire about the recall. They were surprised that they had not done it yet. The last time I had called was shortly after the notice came in the mail. They called me this morning to schedule me in for Saturday 'cause the parts are in. Let ya know how it goes....

Birdman, that sucks!

I'm really hoping that Court is right and these dealers are going to get straightened out.

Maybe I didn't spend $20k on a big twin but I could have bought two Sportsters for what I've spent at my dealer for my Uly and after-stuff.

I wonder whether "lowly" Sporty owners get the same treatment...

Smoky Mountain H D got'er done! I'm glad the're my dealer. They have towed me in within an hour when my clutch cable broke(took a week to get the cable), fixed a trans out-put shaft seal over night, fixed a bag latch while I waited, and now have done the side stand recall in about an hour. From what I've been reading that seems pretty good!

Devil Mountain HD in CA did a great job by me as well. My clutch cable broke; they had a truck at my house to haul the bike to the shop within an hour. At no charge!
They did the clutch cable and the side stand recall at the same time.

The deal on the clutch cable was the cable was not pivoting at the lever. It was bending every time the lever was pulled and just work hardened and broke. Make sure your cable turns freely in the lever.

For those of you waiting (as I was) for your recall parts:

Every time I talked to the dealership over the past 7 weeks or so I was referred to the parts department for them to check whether the parts were in. Same answer every time - no.

I called again a couple days ago and talked to the service manager (why I didn't before I don't know). He said he would have to go physically check the stock room since their recall parts don't go into their normal inventory. Lo and behold there was a kickstand recall kit. He slapped my name on it and asked me when I'd like to come in. So, sidestand should be done Saturday morning.

So everyone that's been waiting this may be the situation at your dealer.

My .02 and hope it helps.

It always pays to ask. One of the requirements of a recall concerns parts availability.

Ostensibly to prevent a firm from issuing a recall to limit liability and then having something like "parts will be available in 6 months"

Thank you Uncle Sam.

GOOD NEWS!!

Thanks to FtBstrd, who pulled some strings with an inside man he knows at my local dealership, my sidestand will be replaced this Saturday. The shop called today and asked when I'd like to have it done.

Sadly...he introduced himself as "Steve from the Harley shop". : (

I don't own a Harley. LOL!

So...long story short...if you want something fixed on your Buell, you either have to know an inside man, know someone who knows someone, or call customer service.

Seems to me there is something wrong with this business model.

So, almost a week after my call to Buell Customer Service I have still heard nothing from the local dealer.

Today I called the dealer who had to check in the parts bin and lo and behold, they have parts to do my sidestand recall! Amazing. I asked about the tall windshield parts (no sense not doing them both at once) and he said he would check and call me back.

A couple of hours later and I get a call and they managed to get those parts located as well and they are reserved for my bike.

Since I don't have an "inside man" they can't get the bike in to install these parts until October 23rd.

My expectations are so low by now that I don't even mind the wait. I just hope that they don't damage my bike during the install. I wish that they would just give me the parts so that I could install them.

The saga continues and for another couple of weeks I will park always considering the "fall zone" to the left of the Buellysses and hoping that I will get a real mechanic to install these parts rather than the ape who beat on my bike during the 1K service.

Good news on the dealer front today.

I take my bike in for the sidestand recall. Parts are there, and they take my bike right back.

After about 5 minutes, the service manager finds me and says, "I need to show you something". I go back to the shop with him, and there is oily residue all around my countersprocket and it's heavier near the bottom of the engine.

The service manager asks me if I'd had any leaks, and I told him that I hadn't. He told me that this may be a new issue which happened in the last few miles. He told me that while the bike was there, he'd like to take care of the issue versus me taking the bike and having to bring it back later or worse yet, having whatever seal is letting the oil by start leaking badly soaking my rear tire in primary oil.

He takes me back to the owners office, and asks if I can take a rental bike until they can get mine fixed. He agreed and they sent me home on a Road Glide.

They were taking the countersprocket off when I left. The mechanic said it's a rare problem, but he's almost positive he knows what seals need replacing. They had them in stock and should have me ready to go tomorrow (yep...on Sunday!).

I have to say, I'm impressed with how I was treated. The owner even took time to talk racing with me, and let me take a look at their XBRR they were prepping for next years race season (WERA I'm sure...no AMA aspirations for them).

I give a big thumbs up to Bumpus HD in Murfreesboro, TN. Steve Shivers took care of me as did Mr. Bumpus. Good folks.

As for the Road Glide....WHEW! That thing is a pig (guess that's why they call them hogs : ) ). My Goldwing feels lighter and more nimble. No, wait....The words light, nimble, and Goldwing should NEVER be used in the same sentence. Pardon me. : )

Unbelievable story, Chadhargis! Will those guys come out here to So CA to pick up my bike for service?

My Uly has crap all around the front sprocket also (since the first week), I was told as usual that was "normal" unless it's dripping...

A WingNut and a BadWebber... man that's some polarity!

Chas:

Any problems sharing your letter with some folks?

That's the way I was always treated at Topeka Harley-Davidson/Buell.

That's the way things SHOULD work. Everyone is a winner in that scenario.

Bumpas is the dealer where I bought my bike. I have rarely been treated as well by any dealer buying any product. They have treated me great in the service department as well.
I do feel sorry for those of you who do not have a quality dealer close by. I dealt with piss poor Ducati/Moto Guzzi dealer who acted unconcerned weather they sold a bike or not. Unless you walked in with hundreds falling out your pocket they did not have time for you, they are now out of business.
One day the Harley fad will be over and only true enthusiasts will be buying bikes. These bad dealers will have to change their ways or suffer for it. I have been saying that now for about 5 years though. Hughhh....

With fad, I mean all the "bikers" who got into riding for the image of it. It mostly came as a hoard of riders, all wanting Harley's. The laws of supply and demand being what they are, drove the prices up and the service of many dealers down. Salesmen did not have to sell you the bike, only help fill out some paper work. If you did not like the deal, someone else would tomorrow. See ya, don't let the door hit you on the way out...
I in no way mean anything disparaging towards Harley, only some "enthusiasts" that is largely responsible for the bad Harley dealers. Yes, they are responsible because they were willing to be treated poorly and still purchase the product at what ever price. It was just recently you could walk into your local dealer and even contemplate paying MSRP for a bike. I could not and would not do business with any business that treats me that way.

No problem sharing my comments. I told Mr. Bumpus that I'd spread the word, and I intend to do so.

Nothing is worse than someone complaining when something is done wrong, but never giving praise when things are done right. I was treated fairly, and my issues were corrected in a timely manner (once I got hooked up with the right guy).

I picked up my bike yesterday, and it's good to have it back.

I keep waiting on the Harley "fad" to end. So far, folks have been waiting 103 years. I'm sure the end is near. : ) LOL!

Today I went back to my local dealer to get the tall windshield and sidestand recalls done. Only 28 degrees here in Idaho this AM so had a cold ride in.

The whole operation took 2.5 hours during which I waited at the showroom. There was a new salesman there that was actually riding a Kawi KLR that had not one bit of chrome. We had some interesting conversations about motorcycles in general.

I looked the bike over after the operation and see no problems. They seem to have done all the work including replacing the muffler clamps.

It is nice to have the sidestand repaired and not have to worry about the projected fall zone to the left whenever parking the bike. I also think that the bolts in the bottom two pins of the tall windshield are a good idea.

It is great that Buell took the effort and expense to solve these two first year problems.
