Took my Uly in for a 5k service, new rear tire, sidestand recall, and my second broken pannier latch (right side this time), the dealer informed me that they had just recieved a service bulletin on the latches and are able to get the parts very quickly. Does this mean that a recall is soon to follow with better quality latches? These latches are the only problems my Uly has given me and I would like to see them correct this, the panniers are great other then that issue. | ||

I just purchased my Uly this week and was able to buy "06" bags for $100 less than "07" bags. The newer editions presumably have the improved latch, thus the price hike. Maybe I'm just tellin tales tho. How do I keep from cracking my latch until they offer a full recall? NUTS | ||

Apply NO pressure when closing the bags. If when you close the bag, the latch does not close freely with ease, DO NOT FORCE IT! Open the bag and see what's in the way. Since we replaced the first latch, we've had no issues. Hope this continues to be the case. | ||

I have never used the latch as a closer, I have always pushed the clam shell closed and held it closed with my leg and then latched it with the key. So, for those who think this is operater error try again. Dave, call Woodstock H-D and talk to Dave in thier service dept, that is were I learned of this (815) 337-3511. I am so close to ordering H&B 45 ltr alum side cases to replace these factory ones...If I was to do it over again I would not buy the factory panniers. | ||

Since I'd started reading about the latches months ago being fragile and of poor design I also modified my closure procedure. Rightside tore anyway. Leftside broke the other night all by itself, bag closed and bike and me sleeping. The plastic is crap and the hinge is toy quality. Get some metal or at least Zytel in there and beef up the hinge area. | ||

Mine live on my bike, and I havent had any isues with the seals or the latches. Guess I am lucky, or have just cursed myself. | ||

BTW: If you hang some garlic cloves all over the handle bars, you might avoid the curse of the latches. Vampires, for sure, latch curse is iffy! There is some evidence it also cures pinging. | ||

My bags have been just fine. I never force the bags close with the latches though... But again, due to the issue, I am VERY careful. | ||

I have opened and closed the bags on our Uly demo probably 1000 times. Full of stuff and empty. I have been lucky I guess, no broken latches for me. | ||

Those latches do seem flimsy, really not as solid as my old monokey givi e-36's. The seal in my droops at the bottom and surely must put more stress on the latches/hinges. Has anybody taken the gaskets off or replaced with something better?? | ||

Supertoon, as long as there is something loaded in the inside half that gasket will pop out when I reopen the bag. It's just become part of my ritual when closing the bags to replace them into their channels. One of these days I'll take my own posted advice and glue them in, black silicone adhesive should work fine. Checked today on my latches that weren't there Tues for replacement. Seems the claim to overnight them was without basis. Seems they are "two weeks out" as they had to be ordered "from the vendor". Seems I've heard that before with my tankbag that hadn't arrived after 3 months... Honeymoon's over. | ||

I had latch failure on just one side so far. Odd thing is... it's the kickstand side so I rarely use it. The other side gets daily use and has yet to fail (knock on wood) DAve | ||

Silicon didn't work for me for my seals. There IS a fix that works 100% ... contact Buell CS. DAve | ||

I spent a day riding through heavy rain recently and didn't have any trouble with leaks. You may have a different experience, but it's something to consider. I didn't like the hassle of trying to fit the gasket into the groove ever time I wanted to close the side case. | ||

My left side bag latch broke and when I went to get it replaced under warranty they had to replace the whole bag. They took the key number and all to make sure it was the same and poof 2 weeks later it was in. The day they put the bag on the bulletin was released telling them to order only the latch and a "new" part number. No part number was available for only the latch before. There was a difference between the old bag and the new. The new bag shut much better than the old due to a thinner seal at the top that does not pinch when it is closed. The latch looks the same still thin plastic in the hinge area. It does not look like any improvement at all in the latch. It was odd to me how fast I got my "replacement" bag so fast and many people are still waiting to get there's? Just a good shout out to the guys at Macon GA Service guys. If you ever need service and are in that area they do great work and fast!! | ||

I fixed my own side case seals. I tried the old faithful super weatherstrip adhesive (the stuff that looks like yellow baby shit) but that didn't work. I finally got some 3" wide rubber plumbers tape. It's made to stick good to ABS. I got the seals re-fitted into their respective channels then cut a piece of the tape long enough to reach from one side to the other along the bottom of the case, then starting by gently sliding the tape under the bottom of the case up to the hinges and sticking it down then gently bringing it up and over the seal and into the inside bottom of the case without making too tight so as not to deform the shape of the seal. It sticks very good, the seals still work good and don't fall out anymore! It actually looks good too! I'll try to post a picture when I get some time. I kept hearing about some permanent fix that Buell CS had, but since nobody ever fessed up on what it is, I fixed it myself.... BC Steve | ||

Is it not less than amazing, all the time spent on the bag latch issue... so what is it? Apply pressure to the bag to close the latch? Dont apply pressure to the latch? if met with resistance start all over again? If i can get the saddle bag pre flight check list down to a dozen steps, I think I will be over qualified to work on the space shuttle pre flight prep team. MAKE THE LATCHES OUT OF METAL FIND A WAY TO KEEP THE GASKETS IN PLACE my bags live on the bike too.. I'm so happy i have a tank bag now...I would rather stub my toe on furniture than have to open one of those clams on a trip...On my third latch.. Better living through bungees... |
