It's time for a new lid and I was looking at the Shoei X-11 and TZ-R. Has anyone seen the Axis yellow or Barricade Orange in person? In some pictures either one looks close to the Uly Orange, but in other pictures they look way off. Just curious if anyone knows of a close match to the Uly Orange or can speak of these helmets. I like to wear gear that matches the bike while at the same time are bright and noticeable in traffic. An Orange helmet that high in the air has to get some attention! Also, which one is more oval shaped? I've read reviews that claim the TZ-R is both round and Oval. I need a very oval helmet. I read a review that the X-11 is oval, but in pictures it looks more round than the TZ-R. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks,
Joel

Hi Joel:

I have the X-11 in Axis yellow and love it. I got the yellow to really stand out in traffic. It also happens to match the trim on my Motoport kevlar jacket. Only thing I may add is some SOLAS tape on the rear, and some reflective decals on the sides for night use.

Best airflow of anything I have tried, and it is pretty quiet too. Running in 98 degree 70% humidity several weeks ago (114 degree heat index), I was very happy with the airflow even with the shield fully closed. One nice touch is that the lever on the left side has a setting that cracks open the shield for increased airflow, and the amount of the open can be set by the user. The manual really sucks as to how to do this but it is easy once you look at the mechanism for a while.

Only thing I changed is the cheek pads; I went to the thinner ones, because the stock pads squashed my cheeks together too much. Also, get one of the metal quick connectors and put on the chin straps. Much easier to operate than that nylon wart on the strap trying to get into and out of the D-rings, especially with gloves on.

One of the really nice things I like about the helmet is that the spoiler on the top back really eliminates the "stall rumble" when the airflow leaves the helmet. (Pilots here will understand that statement). The chinbar incorporates a nice "breath vacuum" that mostly eliminates fogging in cold weather.

My head is a typical square-ish German head, so I guess it is kinda oval on top. Don't know anything about the TZ-R. Your best bet is to find a dealer and try it on for a while. That is the only real way to see if it is right for you.

In summary, the X-11 is a very nice helmet worth the money, and the fit and finish of all parts is excellent.

Is the color close to the Uly or much more yellow?

i have an arai astral.. it has a funky brit union jack on the sides all neon and what not... i told the guy at the bmw shop i hate graphics... he told me it was 300bucks off cause the racer changed his pattern the year before... then i told him how much i loved graphics... don't let the matching thing bug you to much... your helmet is as much your signature as the bike is... sometimes more on the road...

Joel: The helmet yellow is actually what I call "signal yellow" designed for high visibility. The Uly orange is actually about the color of a tiger... definite orange but not as much as the KTM orange.

I'm of the opinion that unless you take all of your paintable parts and accessories off and paint them to match your soft apparel you'll never get a "match".

Contrasting or complimentary colors can be much more satisfying than "That's close enough" attempts to match.

Believe me, "close enough" attempts stand out, negatively.

I saw a HD helmet recently at a dealer out of state, orange flames on black. I'm not into flames but it looked good. HD helmets are Shoei I believe. If I had room to pack it I probably would have bought it. It's about as visible as you can get, contrasting orange and black.

I meant to take a pic of my yellow shoei sitting on a Orange seat for you last night. Darn powdercoating is taking over my life.

Thanks guys,

I went ahead and ordered the Shoei TZ-R in Pure Orange. The rest of my gear is Silver and Black, so it should stand out pretty well. I'm sure it will probably come in looking like contruction barrel orange and clash with the bike. Oh well it will still be seen well.

" it will still be seen"
I think that is what we want, to be seen.
Anything that will attract attention to help the cages see and avoid us is a good idea.
