Took the uly to pick up my son @ Ft. Jackson, already 2k from home. Well almost made Columbia,TN. When this hellacious racket came out of the motor, turns out my front spark plug has come out. I could put the plug back in with my fingers and pull it right back out, I was not happy, then the dealer@Columbia is no longer a buell dealer. The next dealer said they could get me going by friday, thou I had to be back here wed for work,so I rented a truck and am back home. The dealer here is replacing the head. Brag allows a $100 tow charge but won't pay if you tow it yourself.

Bummer to hear that. I hope that the dealer gets you all sorted out.

How many miles on the engine?

Have the plugs been removed prior to the blow out?

8200 miles&the plugs have never been touched. My dealer here is good, had the sidestand recall done on friday of the rally, which says alot. Mechanics I"ve talked to said this could only be a defective head or over tightning@ the factory.

Happy again, got the uly back yesterday, new head&spark plugs. Runs like new. After talking to the mech. seems the shop here put the wrong plugs in it before I bought the bike,i.e.demo 17 miles. BRAG came through &will reimburse me the $100 towing charge so now I'm only down $590. The dealer is going to try to do more for me,I just don't know what yet. It's so damn good to be riding again.

I posted the same problem earlier. It happened to me in May. With mine, the plug was cross-threaded and ripped half the threads out of the head when it came out. I was able to screw the plug back in and ride 400 miles home. All repairs were done under warranty. Thanks again to Buell and Southern Tier HD in Binghampton, NY.

Breaking down far from home always sucks.
My uly lost the rear wheel bearings miles from nowhere on the Alaska hyway. Short version, after spending over $3000.00 for wreckers, shipping via truck, bus fare etc.
I was reimbursed $550.00 from the extended
warranty. I won't be taking the uly far from any dealer again,it's a blast to ride
but I don't trust it for a long trip.
As far as dealer service is concerned I have
received nothing short of fantastic service, especially from Prince George H/D in BC.

2_spuds - What dealers would have been closer if you were riding another make? Just wondering since Buell buys there wheel bearings from a supplier just like every other motorcycle make in the world?

Mcn2, I'am not familiar with any other dealers networks but I certainly didn't expect the wheel bearings to take a dump with 12,000 miles on the clock.I was well under the gvwr by over 150lbs. After the wheel bearings it was a broken belt, then the kickstand, then a relay, then a slash in the rear tire.Instead of shipping it from dealer to dealer to get home I rented a u-haul in Montana and brought it back. This winter I'll pull the back wheel off and find
a way to install better bearings.

Man 2-Spuds, it sounds like you had a rough trip. Wheel Bearing do fail, that is why they are to be inspected during the annual inspection by the state (at least in my state). After you change out the wheel bearings let us know what you find out.

I can understand if the wheel was twisting due to the wheel bearing that the belt would break. You would of screwed up a chain too, though a chain would have been easier to find once you got back to civilization.

A relay? Also on this trip? Man I haven't heard of anyone having that problem I guess Murphy's Law.

The Kick Stand broke on the trip too. Man, you need to prey for forgiveness or something LOL. Someone was telling you to go home. Just wondering, was this the replacement kick stand or the original '06 kick stand. I haven't heard of any problems with the replacement kick stand yet, but just in case.

And finally a tire. I have slashed a Dunlop and Pirelli and those guys that do serious overland, away from civilization off road trip usually carry spare tires or at least plug kits just in case.

Man again, I hate it when a fellow biker has problems on a dream trip like this, but I too have traveled on my Buells and have had some minor problems with the M2 but nothing like what you describe. I have been from the coast of North Carolina to Indiana and back. I've been to Daytona FL. and back. I have done several road trips to the GA,TN,NC,VA mountains including some fire roads and the Uly has always carried me home. It follows a family trait that the M2 started. It too has been to all those places, except for the fire roads and has always carried me home. So the M2 at 44,000 miles and the Uly at 13,000 miles I would have no problem riding cross country on either of them. But like any bike, things can happen. I had a flat tire five miles from home and had to call the wife to bring the trailer. If you are not going to prepare an alternate plan, may I suggest traveling in a group with a chase vehicles. That is what the serious off-roaders do. The pictures they take of just them on the Grand Tetons or like place is usually followed with a night picture at camp with a big truck with chains and tires, and wiring supplies etc. Things happen and I, like you, just roll the dice. How far would you travel in your car without a spare tire (or run flats)?

Welcome to the Broken Wheel Bearing club. : ) That was the very first thing that stranded me on my old M2. A rear bearing died with about 9k on the odometer. Admittedly the bearing wasn't original though because the bike's previous owner performed an XB wheel swap, but I still didn't expect it.

For the record, this is the WRONG way to remove a bearing:

Especially without eye protection and that propane tank bomb in the background. Probably oil rags off to the left.
