My rotor is warped after 12500 miles. Should this be replaced under the warranty? The front pads were changed before they reached the wear marks. Of course my dealer says it is not.

At one time I thought I had a warped rotor.

I checked it with a indacator and it had .007" run out. I think shop manual allows .020?

Turned out to be the funky stock pads causing brake modulation. I could even feel it through the lever. I bought Lyndalls from Amercian Sport Bike and now front brakes feel much better.

My dealer replaced my rotor under warranty and the work order said it was warped .015. I read up on chattering front brakes on the xb forum and several people recommended changing to the pads form american sport bike. I thought about this approach but decided to take it in because it is covered by the warranty so I might as well let them fix it. I also did not know if changing to a more aggressive brake pad would void the warranty on the disk.

This seems to be a common problem on the XB line. The rotors feel warped, but it actually is a build up of pad material. It seems to be the consensus to change the pads that American Sport Bike sells. It looks as if they clean the old material off. My Uly has the same problem, I just haven't sprung for the pads yet, but I probably will this winter.

I get a bit of brake studder under hard braking, but not moderate braking, so I don't think it's a warped rotor.

What's the scoop on these pads? I'm not familiar with them.

I put the Lyndall pads on my bike about 1000 miles ago. My front brake does not stutter any more. My rotor also does not have a brownish color to it anymore. It seems that the stock pads (I think they are Nissan brand) leave a "residue" on the rotor that gives it an almost burnt look. This residue also contributes to the grabbiness or "digital" feel of the front brake. It takes a little more effort on the lever to get the same stopping power, but I don't feel that is a problem because the front brake is quite powerful anyway.

To me the front brake feels much better and easier to modulate, especially in situations where a precise light touch is necessary, like trail braking into a corner or on loose surfaces which the Uly is well suited for.

I called Amercian Sport Bike and Al Lighton recommended them to me and I am very satisfied and got the results I expected. I see Daves has them also. I think I payed about $60 for mine so I see the price is about the same from either source. (They are both great, knowledgeable guys to do business with)

The service department here said that the rotor had "hot spotted" and was producing the vibration/studder. My results were just the opposite of Chad's. I got no real vibration under hard braking. When I was in a slow deceleration (like coming to a stop at a stop light), I got severe vibration. It sounded like the horn was beating against the back of the front plastic (along with a can of tuna, my car keys, and a ham sandwich). They tightened the head bearing as well as replacing the brakes and rotor under warranty.

No further vibration/modulation.

Question. In order to get the positive results of the Lyndall pads, must you start with a virgin rotor or will the pads reverse brake pad build up?

I'm wondering whether I need to go ahead and replace the new brake pads or wait until they wear.
