I've got 15,000 trouble-free miles on my Uly. Yesterday took a 400+ mile ride including about 20 miles of dirt (pretty easy dirt). Pushing the bike backwards in the garage I hear a faint "whining" from the belt, and the belt is riding a little farther outside on the rear pulley. I will investigate it today (I assume it's rubbing on the guard, but I wonder why), but if I have to fiddle with the belt each time I ride 20 miles of dirt road I'll be a little disappointed. P.S. I'm not whining, I love the bike. | ||

Sounds like you just need to lube your belt more often.  | ||

Mine does that when pushing it back into its stall in the garage. Everything seems to straighten out when I roll it forward. | ||

When I went to look at it this afternoon it's already "fixed itself." I don't think I've ever heard it rubbing before. And---regardless of the extensive testing by Buell---I tend to keep a watchful eye on the belt anytime I've been off-pavement. BTW, what do you "lube" the belt with? I can't believe you mean "lubricant" in the traditional sense. Perhaps a belt dressing or conditioner...anyway, what product do you use? The Official Factory Manual says "clean the drive belt with a mild soap and water spray solution as required." I must admit I haven't really done this (first belt-drive bike I've owned). Is this what you mean? | ||

I took a nice little ride off the pavement today. I was just riding around the area and went down a road to see if it was any good. Some turns but very populated and not somewhere you are going to want to push it. Soon I see a road end sign and I decide to see where it goes. A path at the end of the pavement continued so I followed it. It seems that no one had been down the path in a while because the brush was starting to get into the path. I had a few dips and bumps and the Uly did great. Anyway after a couple of miles on the path I pop out by the river. There was a little lean-to set up and seamed to be a fishing spot because it had a little board walk out about 20' into the river. Belt looked good once I got home, but the path was mostly sand and only a little gravel at the end of the pavement. | ||

Dr Greg, It may be our sandy environment. I have to ride mine on about a mile of soft sandy road to and from my house a couple times a day when I go to work and back. My lets out a little squeak every time I'm coming to a stop or just taking off from a stop. It sounds like it comes from the idler pulley on mine. I know it's not the brakes because they squeak loudly until I get the sand blown out about half way to work. Just a thought. Joel |
