I stopped by my dealer (which has changed ownership since I bought my Uly) to see if they knew about the sidestand recall. They didn't, but brought up my VIN and yup, there it was. Maybe I'm expecting too much from them. The guy said "you oughta get a letter from H-D" then to call them (they would have the parts by then) and get it done. Does anyone with any prior experience in H-D/Buell recalls like this know the likely timing? How much longer am I going to be wondering "is today the day it breaks?" P.S. Why is it that almost every dealer person I interact with seems like a high-school dropout...frustrating. |

I'm waiting for my letter too. I've never had to deal with any of this recall stuff before. Should I be calling my dealer? Buell customer service? |

Parts will be available Aug 15th I think I saw. You should be getting a letter prior to that. |

Any idea of the build dates that are affected by the recall? Someone here had their VIN number checked by the dealer and was told their bike already had the updated part. I think that bike was a Jan. build date. |

As safety recalls usually go. Any "in stock units" will have a stop sale order put on them. They will get fixed first. Then the first made will be first recalled. Unless there are enough parts to repair all sold units. Then there could be a blanket mass mailing/recall. Either way; If possible, go back to your selling dealer for the recall. They will likely have the recall part alloted for your bike. |

Wolffone2000, Chicks is now Thunderbird HD. They haven't changed one bit from my personal experience with them. Needless to say I bought mine from Sante Fe HD on the 14th. They also scheduled my sidestand recall for the 28th before I left the dealer with my new Uly. Joel newbie '06 Uly '93 KLR650 |

I have an April build unit. I simply called my guy at the dealership (Youngstown HD/Buell) and they looked up the VIN, checked it against the recall and let me know that mine's not part of the recall. It apparently came from the factory with the updated parts. Any dealership should be able to do the same, if they've got your VIN# or if you provide it. |

BTW They didn't know about the recalls, either for the sidestand or the tall shield, when I first called, but looked them up while I was on the phone and confirmed. Not too surprising since it was only a couple days after the recall was announced. |

My Uly is a March '06 bike and per the dealer, not effected by the recall. I am curious to see what the recall consists of so I can compare to my bike. Thanks. |

You may get the info from any dealer. The "effected population" will also be listed in the NHTSA document available on-line |

Its effective on all Ulys built from 3/15/05 to 06/16/06 according to the sample owners letter Buell wrote for the NHTSA.

In talking to Buell rep at Laguna Seca, he said that the new side-stand assembly was cut in to production on 9 Jan. There was still a process/assembly issue with the torque for a bit longer, so the recall is likely inspect and replace as required. |

My bike was built in August '05. I doubt it has the sidestand they cut into production on 9 Jan. |

"How can one find out his build date?" There's a tag on the frame, right side, between the air box and forks, under the warning label. |

As I mentioned a few times in the "sidestand just broke" thread, the kit P/N L1167.1AK I believe to be the replacement for the early-style stand leg and pivot bolt. The new style has a leg with a modified clevis, and a pivot pin replacing the bolt. I tried to move the pin around without the e-clip installed, it seems to be designed to stay retained by the spring extension plate but I'm guessing here. If you have a gold-colored pivot bolt with a hex head to turn its threads into the stand leg, you have the old style. If you have a silver-colored pivot pin that passes completely through the stand leg clevis and bracket, that's the new and you have less to worry about. Since they are recalling most Uly's built even months after the new stands have been utilized I can only assume that it's the mounting bolts which have become a source of concern for the factory. IMHO of course. |

Of course none of this speculation matters since the recall is as follows: from the NHTSA website: Make : BUELL Model : XB12X Year : 2006 Manufacturer : BUELL MOTORCYCLE CO. NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 06V245000 Recall Date : JUL 07, 2006 Component: STRUCTURE:MOTORCYCLE KICKSTAND/CENTER STAND Potential Number Of Units Affected : 1021 Summary: CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES MAY HAVE BEEN BUILT WITH TWO ISSUES THAT COULD COMPROMISE THE SIDESTAND'S PERFORMANCE. EITHER THE PIVOT BOLT FOR THE SIDESTAND LEG OR THE MOUNTING BRACKET BOLTS COULD BREAK, POSSIBLY WITHOUT NOTICE. Consequence: IF EITHER OF THESE FAILURES OCCURS, THE MOTORCYCLE COULD FALL, POSSIBLY CAUSING DEATH OR INJURY. Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE SIDESTAND ASSEMBLY AND FASTENERS. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUELL AT 1-414-342-4680. Notes: CUSTOMERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV. |

Be careful with your bike, if your sidestand breaks and messes up bags, buell won't cover it under warranty, trust me my shop made a guy pay to replace his bag after his sidestand broke for the 2nd time (though we know he mounts his buell by jumping the pegs while it's on it's stand) |

Got my bike back from the dealer last week after the sidestand broke. In addition to replacing the sidestand and bolts, warranty covered the damage to the hand guard and side case lid - no questions asked http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/142838/209407.html?1152881204 Dealer = California HD/Buell on PCH in Harbor City, CA Cheers -Jack |

Wow if I was Joe customer... possession is 9/10ths. I'd tell you to pack sand. Seriously, did they deny because of the way the guy mounts the bike? Or did they just do a flat denial? I mount that way when I've got gear on the pillion. I don't remember seeing anything in the manual about getting on the bike... Cheers Brett |

I would expect that if you (or the customer) pushed back that Buell would pay. If the brakes failed due to a manufacturing/design issue, causing a crash, they would cover the damage. Same thing with the side-stand. If it were me I would be Buell's worst enemy until I got them to cover it. |

My handguard and left bag were replaced by Stone Mountain HD/Buell after my sidestand broke and the bike fell. They said they got approval from the factory for all of the repair costs and parts. This was a couple of days before the recall was issued. (Message edited by medic on July 26, 2006) |

Called in to see my dealer here in England about my noisy fan (diagnosed as a shot bearing at 6,000 miles) & was told they had just received word about the sidestand recall so they would be checking my vin no. and would get back in touch if it applied to me. New fan is now on order as well as a warranty replacement. |

I was thinking the same thing Electraglider. Might be working on it now, as I read in some other post that fans are on backorder till 8/17. Makes me wonder if they are switching to a different manufacturer or something. |

centurion, how noisy does a fan have to be for a dealership to diagnose a bad bearing? I'm gonna have them take a listen to mine when I schedule the kickstand bolt fix. I got my letter yesterday. Tim |

I walked in at my dealer today (this is a multi brand dealer, all jap bikes, Triumph, HD & Buell) and one of the mecanics saw me and came up to me to tell that they had to replace the bolts of my sidestand. I told him about the fan noise, this will also be replaced under warranty |

How are you guys are getting the fan replaced by warranty? Has there been any "official" word on the fan issue from Buell? I have already had my dealer look at it and they pulled out A pine needle and said that there was nothing else wrong... but it just sounds not right to me... as in kind of "rattling" not just loud... I guess I just need to find someone else around here to compare mine with, or hope it completely fails soon while under warranty... |

Make sure they hear your fan when the bike is hot. Mine would run when cold, but sould stop when hot. Leave the bike running until you get the service manager out to listen. |

Does the muffler have to be removed for the sidestand upgrade? Will the dealer use a new mounting bracket it the muffler is removed? |
