I just got a copy of Buell Motor Company Sidestand Recall 0837. ... So again Bad Weber's are at the front in helping identify issues. ... Contact your dealer for details. And again thanks to all for keeping this on the front burner for almost a year. ... Terry

Can you post any details about the fix? My dealer hasn't heard about this yet.

Coincidence? Mentioned NHTSA yesterday and today Buell issues a recall.

Buell Dealers can go to www.hdnet.com/service for details. Buell is required to notify all owners of record to affected parts. ... The details need to come from a dealer. ... Terry

I know. Yesterday I commented on how dry it was and it rains like a cow pissin' on a flat rock today?

What's up with that?

: )

Buell has, as has been pointed out, working diligently on the fix. The same NHSTA that folks mentioned is the one who requires certain things to happen BEFORE a recall can be announced.

It was no coincidence.

Court,
I think what you meant to write was that it WAS just a coincidence, meaning that it was going to happen anyway.

Does the recall state any policy on bike damage being repaired due to a failure?

I can't seem to find a NHTSA listing for this....

Additionally the dealer says they know nothing about it.....

I wonder if the NHTSA is even involved, since it really doesn't involve vehicle "operation". I mean you're not going to have a wreck if the sidestand breaks.

No.

It was a coincidence. Buell announced this at the first possible moment they could. No one in their right mind would ever have this kind of information, have all the criteria met and simply "wait" as a matter of commercial convenience.

Expect information to take a couple days to get disseminated. It will be posted on the hdnet site where dealers have all their Buell information available.

The timing sucks just a tad too because so many people are at the Harley-Davidson/Buell Annual Dealer Conference.

Be sure when you contact your dealer to have the recall number. Give it to them with your VIN and they will be able to tell you if your Buell is one of the effected bikes.

I'm inferring from this that not all Ulysses are affected by this recall. Correct? Does the announcement provide a VIN range?

Too bad there wasn't an official press release from Buell a year ago that said: YES, we're working on a recall - BUT it's going to take a year BECAUSE dah, da, dada, dah... it takes that long to engineer a new part, prove it actually fixes the problem, and jump though the govt. hoops. Sorry -- please bear with us and be careful - don't put too much weight on the stand. If it does break in the mean while we'll take care of you.

Such an official communication would have been the "right" thing to do, IMHO. Of course, It was probably a bunch of blood-sucking lawyers that kiboshed any honest heartfelt communication...

I hope I expressed my opinion respectfully.

I guess I don't have to be afraid of touching the Ulys at my dealership anymore. They've been trying to talk me into test riding one for a while, but I didn't want to be the guy that snapped the stand.

Dealer says ALL MY06 bikes are affected (Built between March 15, 2005 and June 16, 2006). I think June 16 is when the factory switched over to the MY07 run. So it sounds like the 07s will have the fix.

Cheers

Thanks teeps. If you follow the links in teeps' post, drill down to the Uly recall, then click on Document Search, you can see a pdf of the documents submitted to the NHTSA as well as the letter that will be sent to Uly owners.

Daves, any indication of what the changes to the parts are?

If it's going to be a month before the parts are available, and then (based on my dealerships previous performance) another 3 weeks to get a service appointment, it starts to be more appealing to do this myself now.

Do the recall notes for dealers have technical information about the specifics of the failure? If it's a bad batch of bolts/pins I can pick up a replacement, but if it's a redesigned part, then I won't really be making the fix...

I called my dealership last night to ask about the recall. Guy in service said "I'll check" and left me on hold for over 30 minutes after which I gave up. Status quo for them. I should have bought from you.

Smcnamara,
I doubt a dealer will give you the counter measured recall parts to install yourself.
There are strict rules with regard to the execution of a safety recall. All the T's have to be crossed and I's dotted to protect all the parties involved.

That's absolutely accurate.

In addition, the recall itself will have NOTHING that is not required to be in the document. The feds provide the blanks, the manufacturer fills them in.
