Attention any "Anonymous" BW'ers out there, our "ULY" Demo just broke it's 2nd side stand. This time it was the pivot bolt and the last time the rear mount bolt. We replaced all three and will do so again, but you need to find a fix for this SOON? ... Terry

Terry,

What were the specifics of the breaks? These parts just broke? Did the bike fall over?

Anybody else have this?

BTW, thanks so much for the report on Infineon at last ASBN. It was the highlight of the evening.

Go Vallejo Buell!

Jon this has been reported here before and sometimes it's the one of the two stand attach bolts and or the pivot bolt. Yes the bike falls over and yes people have been hurt trying to stop the fall. ... This is the first time we have heard of it happening twice to the same bike. ... Terry

Wow. That's something that sounds serious. People getting hurt is serious.

The bolt's shear strength is not enough to cope with the forces being applied to it. If people were to be pro-active (rather than wait for it to happen) and replace the bolt prior to this happening to them, they would either need a stronger bolt in the same diameter and thread, or a bigger one that might require redesign of the part that recieves it.

Anybody out there care to post a pic of that part of the bike?

What on earth are you people doing to this bike??? Are you getting on while the sidestand supports your weight??? That is not done, on any bike!!!

This is basic

I think it is more an issue of an "offshore" bolt than miss use. The metal in the pivot bolt seems to be very "un-American" and the thanks to labeling that proved to be the case. I will not park my bike to the right of anything that could hurt or be hurt by the bike. The adventure continues.

I do that all the time on my Bandit when it is fully loaded for touring duty. Not ripping on the Uly cause I love it but you should be able to use a kick stand for that.

Guybones,

The people you are addressing is Vallejo Buell and Terry Parsley, people that don't need an introduction or an education regarding what is and isn't done when getting on a bike.

It is a problem. Stick around, listen long and we'll see what developes.

I do that all the time. When you've got dry-bags, a tent and cooking gear strapped to the pillion, it's about the only way to get on. What the ULY needs is a center-stand.

Cheers

Follow up, we will be talking to Tech Support this week and last time they allowed us to add a washer under the attach bolts and use red Locktite, but the pivot bolt failed this time? We will be checking the attach bolts to see if they are loose. ... Terry}}

Mine just broke for the second time. First was on the way to Homecoming (somewhere around 24,500) Uke's took care of me under warranty. Happened again this evening (25800 or so). This time I got the pleasure of the bike falling ON me. Thanks to the folks at WaWa for helping out from under it. What a bunch of crap.

GB, Thanks for your insightful post. Not sure what we would do without great and well thought out input like yours.

Got a good look at it this AM. This time the actual kickstand has snapped. Last time it was one of the bolts that holds it in place. Will try to get pics for you later. It snapped all the way at the top just below the pivot.

What percentage have to break before a recall is issued?

I haven't had any issues with mine, but it makes me wonder if I should start putting mine on a paddock stand while it's in my garage.

I'm a little concerned about the strength of the side stand myself. I need to mount/dismount my Uly by stepping on the left foot peg and throwing my right leg over the seat. Its the only way I can get on/off this bike.

Duck, are you using the pegs/sidestand to mount the bike?

No. I mount the bike by swinging my leg over.

FYI: Buell Customer Service was very helpful as well as my dealership. (Southside HD/Buell in Va Beach)The dealership sent a truck out to help me get the bike.

Sorry about the shout - I bought my bike from Vallejo HD/Buell and have great respect from them - I just have a 6'-5" perspective on this, and am used to older bikes that would not tolerate balancing on the sidestand. Hope you all solve the issue.

My sidestand also broke at about 2500 miles. I was at the races at Elkhart Lake, bummer. Had to find poles, fences and trees all day to lean it against.

The Buell hospitality tent guys were willing to help but did not have a stand.

Went to Lakeshore Harley Davidson/Buell on Sunday morning (service is open on sundays!!!) They told me they checked and there were no sidestands in the whole country and wouldn't be until AUGUST!!! I freaked as I stood there holding my bike up.

Eventually they pulled one off the demo Uly which was excellent service considering their demo Uly is sitting strapped to a skid in the back of the shop until August.

thanks to big John and the guys at Lakeshore.

Checked again today and was told they were back ordered until the end of Sept. As far as I'm concerned Buell can keep the bike. I'm done with them and the bike. Buell customer service was initially helpful, but has been less than helpful since. I don't care if they pull a stand off of a bike at the factory. I'm done. My dealer has been great, but Buell just doesn't seem to feel that it matters that I can't ride my bike. No sense of urgency whatsoever.

"No sense of urgency whatsoever."

Not to play devil's advocate here, and no I haven't drank any Kool-Aid™ today, but they/Buell are about to hit the public release timeframe of any potential new bike models. It could be that they are swamped with building new stuff. Granted that isn't any excuse to not be able to have you back up and running for something like a sidestand. I'm just commenting on the lack of urgency comment.

When they had the rear shock recall that hit my M2 my bike was functionally down for two months minimum during the prime riding season here. I didn't even get any "official" paperwork telling me not to ride it. But that's life, stuff happens, doesn't get you riding any sooner, may have cost them a customer, but stuff happens.

Were it me, I'd document everything, then try to find a local welder and see if your existing sidestand can be fixed or replaced more quickly than the end of September. Either that or turn your bike into a hardtail chopper and sell it for three times what you have into it on E-Bay.

Take care.

Would someone like to send my a broken side stand. I have a lathe, and mig and tig welding capability. I would like to see what might be done.

I will pay shipping.

I just don't want to take mine off and have my Uly down.

In fairness to Buell CS, they informed my dealer that a KS was shipped as of 10:00AM. I remain frustrated by this and other issues and am looking to move on regardless.

Mike, I see your point, but am still frustrated. This kind of stuff just wears on you. I went through hell with my first Buell and this is bringing back all of those bad memories.

As for the KS, Buell wants it.

Has anyone had the clutch cable saw through their frame yet? well Duk and I have... I am gonna keep the Uly though.. I dig it.... Ride Virginia Y'all....

I usually mount with a high slightly off centre kick accompanied with a macho sounding "keeeyaie !!!!" ( as not to appear sissyfied) .. ill have to agree once again about not babying the product... the kickstand should support the riders weight.. I have slept on my Road king's kickstand a dozen times for various reasons....
And for the record I like my buell and my springer, but that does not mean i will not speak out if i find a weakness in the product... The riders in this forum are some of the best "R&D" going for Buell Today.. If anyone here works for Buell, please don't take anything I or anyone else says here personally.. After all we are family right?
I still dig the Uly... ride Virginia Y'all}}

I finally rode a Uly yesterday. One of the things I disliked about it was that the (light feeling, spindly looking) sidestand didn't seem to find a proper place to extend. It appears to have more forward travel available, but tends to stop before the stop, when it's basically sticking straight out from the side. I sure wouldn't want to park it on even the slightest decline.

New kickstand is on and apparently MUCH more robust. I will be getting the bike back tomorrow around lunch and will let you all know what's up.

Thanks to my dealer (Southside Buell in Va Beach) and especially Brian the service writer. A great guy who fights for his customers. Also thanks to Kate at Buell CS for getting the KS out to the dealer. Looks like I'll be able to make the VA Guzzi rally after all.
