This is the 3rd time this has happened. Its been at approx. 1/2 way point of my 25 mi. commute all 3 times. Going 75 mph. Bike completely dies. I roll to the shoulder and flip the kill switch off and back on and the bike runs fine again. The first time it happened I thought I had bumped the switch with my big winter gloves while adjusting my mirrors. Today I know I didn't. Anyone else had this problem or know of any kill switch problems with XBs ? I just had my TPS reset wednesday and the bike has been running great. I stop by the dealer tomorrow.

Let me know what the dealer says. My bike is doing the same thing. It has done it 3 times now. Your exact same symptoms. It runs fine and all of a sudden it shuts off. Each time it happened to me, I reached around(no lude comments please)and turned the key off and back on and the bike roll starts its self and goes on. It will not do it again for a week or so. There seems to be nothing I do that causes it. I was going to take mine this weekend too if I get a chance. I would be interested to hear what is causing your problem.

Sounds like it might be related to the bank angle sensor. Maybe it's faulty.

Guys... do you have any missing time? You may have dropped into the twilight zone or a UFO pilot is checking out the Uly for technology!

I had not considered the UFO, it is certainly possible as I live near a couple of trailer parks and farmers. I have not noticed my rear-end hurting so far, however, their technology may have advanced to prevent such pain nowadays.

Fastfxrs,
I have had my Uly quit at highway speed twice also. My Bike is a real early release and it had a bad exhaust actuator. I read the first 40 had problems with the actuator. After I replaced it it never happened again.

Run a test on yours:
(DO NOT START THE ENGINE!)
With the throttle in the wide open position, Ignition on, Run/Stop on, Does the actuator cycle smoothly?
(You might pull the air box cover to watch the actuator cycle.)

ALso check for a trouble code of 21 using the data link connector procedure.

Thanks Davo, I'll give it a try today. I did'nt get a chace to talk to the service dept. yesterday. As for alien abduction theories, I believe all the orifice probes are reserved for V-Strom riders (just kidding).

My bike is running fine. I called the service dept. at the dealership tonight. Of course he had never heard of that happening but he was going to talk to the buell techs and see if there was a service bulletin. The bike hasn't died again since last week. It does make me nervous, as I wouldn't want to be in the fast lane with no where to go when it suddenly dies. So far, flipping the kill switch off and on has fixed it. I checked my exhaust actuator as you suggested davo and it cycled smoothly. I'll have to wait to hear back from the dealer I guess.

I dropped my bike off yesterday and today I talked to them and of course they could not replicate the problem. They said there were no codes in the computer and was not sure which direction to go. They did order a new key switch that seems to be their best guess. We will see.

Mine just did the same.

Interesting point to note, the tach continued to work even after the engine quit making power. The bike moving w/ the clutch engaged kept the engine spinning.

When the keyswitch is off or the kill switch is off the tach drops to zero.

No codes in mine either.

Anyone know if the lean-angle sensor trips a code if it thinks the bike fell over? There is a code for it (44).

I did not know there was a lean angle sensor. Mine seems to have a greater tendency to die after a sharp turn usually after a turn at a traffic signal. But not always. My tach continues to turn also. I will mention it to the mechanic tomorrow. Thanks, for the info.

Yup. It's just under and to the left of the ECU under the seat. I tapped mine and wiggled it around, no ill effects.

Let us know what you find out.

Sounds scary. That can be dangerous if the bike cuts off in the middle of a fast corner.

Just got back from an Ocean City Md. trip. On Saturday on my way back to OC from Washington My bike Shut down while I was coming down the east bound lane of the Bay Bridge. I was doing 70 MPH with my wife as a passenger. I was lucky to cost down the bridge and make it over two lanes of traffic to the side of the road. Shut off the kill switch and turned it back on and the fuel pump kicked in and hit the starter button and it fired right up. Started to ride the remaining 100 miles and within 20 miles it shut down again. This time I hit the kill switch off and on and the bike started up on the roll and just road on. This happened 4 more times on the remaining miles of the ride. When I got back to the camp site I checked on the fuses and the connections to the battery. The connection to the negative side of the battery seemed a little loose. I tightened it up and it fired up. Sunday morning I took a ride down into Va. about a 120 mile round trip and the bike did not shut down once. I will let you know if it happens again.

Mine did it twice on the way to the Homecoming on thursday. Both times I was at highway speed 70+. I flipped the kill switch and it came back to life.

I talked with Erik Buell about the problem. He wanted to get on of the EFI/ECM guru's toplug into the bike and see if the ECM had any codes stored. They were at the track making sure things were going ok with the XBRR. He admitted they know there is this "anomaly" among a few bikes and there is a effort to figure out the problem and track it down.

We as owners need to keep carefull track of the conditions when this happens. i.e.
Weather
How long had the bike been running
RPM
Speed
Gear

I checked my battery cables and they are tight I check the fuse block and found one or two that did seat in a little more when I pressed them. However nither of them were the ECM fuse, Horn & Fan.

I'm going to find out today as I'm leaving Wi and heading back to MD. I'll report in when I get home.

Someone from the Mother ship (H-D) read my original post and contacted me and my dealer about getting this issue resolved (talk about customer service!) The dealer called me to tell me they ordered a cam position sensor as the guy from H-D Tech Services felt pretty certain that this could be the problem. I've been waiting over a week for the part but they're going to get my bike in ASAP. Everyone I've talked to sounds very concerned about this problem and the potential dangers of riding when this happens. It's happened a total of 6 times to me. The weather was dry and between 60 -80 degrees F each time and except for the last 2 times ( 30 sec apart, 5 min into the ride), the bike would die approx 10- 15 min into the ride while riding a steady 70-75 mph in 5th gear. The bike always quickly restarts by cycling the kill switch on the fly. I'm going the call the dealer for the status on my part again. I hope we all have good luck getting this fixed soon.

I'll add my .02 - mine died twice in the rain but would not restart (most recent post was titled 'Wet weather - strike 2'). The first time the techs could find nothing wrong but it sat for a day and a half and had time to dry out.

2nd time was 3 weeks ago. This time the bike didn't have time to dry out and they found the connector that goes to the cam position sensor was full of water. The tech repositioned the connector and packed it full of dielectric grease. I've ridden it in the rain everyday for the last 3 days and for about 2 hours the day I picked it up. No problems so far but I'm still a little leery of it.

Stevenknapp, if the tacho continued to work after the engine quit making power then the cam position sensor is OK and the ecm has power, since it drives the tacho. If the ecm has power then it shouldn't just quit. Maybe the kill switch is at fault?

There are two 12V power sources to the ecm, one is called "keep alive" and the other is called "switched ignition". If you lose the "switched ignition" source which is via the kill switch, then you also lose the injectors and ignition. I would check the kill switch first but I've been wrong so many times before I can't keep count!

Maybe the kill switch is at fault?

Nope, when you hit the kill switch the switched ignition gets cut at the tach quits working too. : (

I'm questioning the bank/lean angle switch.

Mine did it again coming from Wi on Saturday about 3 1/2 hrs into the ride. Then again 25 miles later. I stopped the night in Ohio with and stayed family. Today I finished my trek to Md with no "anomalys" However it was much cooler and raining today.

A buddy of mine, Duc, is having the same problem per say, but flipping his kill switch makes no difference. This is the first time (read thread "For Duc, and the demise of a Uly??"), but has not restarted itself, per say.

Just thought I would add to the plight!!

Harley Tech services called again today to let me know what they instructed my local dealer to try. They told the dealership to ride the bike at least 70 miles to see if the problem occured-it didn't. They replaced the cam position sensor and just to be safe they are overnighting a bank angle sensor to be installed tomorrow. I know this could be a real PITA if this does'nt work, but I am truely impressed by the lengths Buell/H-D and my local dealership are going through to try to fix my problem. My wife was nice enough to let me ride her new Blast to work today (only had 75 miles on it when I left this morning). Eric Buell really named this one correctly. I'm still smiling from my ride. I'll keep you all updated.

I also got "the call". Very impressive service. I offered them my bike, but said "hey, it happened once in 5200mi of riding, don't be shocked if you ride it and it works fine". : )

If it was cam posistion, why did the tach still work OK on mine? And no trouble code?

Keep us posted.

I have been through my Uly several times and every time I go through it I find a potential "issue" with the wiring harness. Chafed wires and worn areas; melted zip ties and poor wiring orientation over the rocker boxes. I would go through the wiring harness: behind the face plate, steering neck, under the air box and behind the tranny sprocket. It is a quick, easy and cheap fix.

I'll check those areas of the wiring harness, Davo. Just picked up my bike from the warranty work at the dealership. They replaced both the cam position and bank angle sensors as the stated they would. I also got my new lic. plate light. The broken triple tail lock and new muffler (to replace the rusted factory muffler) are on order and will be fixed under warranty also. I just need to get some more miles on and hope for the best. Like I said before, i'm impressed with the service so far. I'll keep you all updated,

Stopped by my dealer on Saturday to inform them of the problem. I asked if they could check for any stored codes on Saturday. After a little begging they put it on the digital tech and found no codes. I asked them to call Buell tech on Monday to see if there was any new info they know about. The dealer gave me a hard time about calling. They said they would not call until I left the bike with them. I could not leave the bike on Saturday since it is my only means of transportation. I said I would call Buell on Monday and see if Buell would call the dealer. Buell service was not able to give me any insight to the problem over the phone. They said I would have to bring it to a dealer and have them call Buell tech. I will be dropping it off at the dealer ASAP. If any Buell techs would like to follow up on this it will be at Nassau County Harley Davidson / Buell in Bellmore, NY
Any info would be appreciated.

Mine has had this problem for a few weeks. I took it to the dealer and of course the problem did not occur with them. I gave them all the info I have accumulated from this thread. They too could find no codes stored in the computer so they surmised it was the key switch and or the kill switch which they ordered. Since it was going to take a week or so for the parts to come in I took my bike home and it has not done it since. They say they did nothing to the bike other than put it on the diagnostic computer. It sat in the dry in their shop for about a week. I am leaning toward moisture getting somewhere it should not be as has been discovered by another poster with this problem. I keep mine in the garage but have rode many miles in the rain on the Uly. This weekend I will be taking all the connectors apart and dielectric greasing them I will see if this fixes it or not. I will keep every one posted.
