Hi Guys - just thought you might get a kick out of seeing where I take my CityX. For those who know the area, this is the Gillard Creek Forest Services Road aka 'Chute Lake road'. for those who aren't local - this is the area that was burned out by the 2002 Okanagen Mountain Park Fire !

http://www3.telus.net/ulendo/chute.html

unfortunately, I had to go pick up my kids by 9:00 AM and was pressed for time: none of the locals were willing to make the run at 6:00 am with me. Its been raining heavily here for a couple of days, and there would have had some great action shots in a couple of the waterholes ( ~15" deep, exhaust foam blowing out from under the water, the whole bit)

lessons learned:
1) I either need to play with my suspension, get some Uly front forks, or both, as I bottom out a few times.
2) buying the cityX, not a Uly paid off, as I got 'kicked' by unseen obstacles in a few of the water holes, and the ability to smack a boot down prevented a couple of 'offs'
3)the cheese grater rear fender is almost useless in this sort of stuff ( gonna be spending most of this afternoon cleaning of my leathers) definitely time for a proper rear cowl!!
4) repeat what I said in the 'what do you want for 2007' thread - needs a lower 1st gear. I did ok, but a lower 1st would have been very helpful in the waterholes, and a couple of the washed out sections.

all in all, I had fun, and the CityX did better than I expected ( ie: didn't give me any nasty surprises, but DID handle it with its usual stability) Some of you Uly guys have to come see me, and do some of these runs!!

thanks blake - had a few questions about just how capable I'm finding the CityX in the dual sport role, so I figured I'd post. It was actually quite a bit tougher than it looks in the photos, but being up there on my own, I cant just lean the bike over on its stand to take a photo on the 'fun' hills and washouts, nor is it possible ( or at least advisable) to leave it standing idling in really deep water.

I also had a couple of emails that for whatever reason the images are coming up dark on some machines, so I've lightened up the pics a bit.

Thanks for the picks Ulendo. I did some sandy fire roads yesterday on my uly. Probably my last off road jaunt with the stock tires as Pilot roads are going on next week. The bike powered through the soft stuff even with a badly worn 616, so I imagine new street rubber will work fine in these conditions. I really wanted a City X but fell in love with the Uly bags. A City X with the "Long" wheelbase and decent bags would be the Low Uly people are asking for.

you hit it right on the head - hard luggage, and the ability to carry passenger+luggage are the 2 drawbacks to a lot of people.

wheelbase, I can take or leave: pretty happy with the handling on the CityX, and aside from the passenger+luggage issue, I haven't found anything where a longer wheelbase would help. Dealing with that scenario isn't quite as bad as people seem to think - all it'd take is a specific bracket setup, and relocating the rear indicator stems onto the bracket ( ie: farther back)locate the bags back 3-4", and there's room for a passenger as well. I gave up waiting, and looking for pre-made cases, and I'm in the process of building my own brackets, and alum cases...pics to follow when I'm happy with the results.

re: forks - I took a good look at the front end of the bike last night. with the CityX bars, and clamps, it looks as though by moving them up through the triple clamps, I might be able to squeeze in Uly forks without changing the overall ride height by too much.
