Has anyone found more comfortable hand grips for the Uly. The stock grips are to small in diameter and tend to make my hands and arms sore.

I bought the Buell Traction grips, they are a little better. The outsides of the grips are not much bigger, but the center is fatter. They were $17, not too bad I guess, and I do like them better. Easy install too. The throttle side comes already glued to a new throttle tube, so you just take the old one off, and replace the whole thing with a new one. Good luck!

I agree. I looked at the BMW grips, but am completely satisfied with the Buell Traction Grips.

I also have the Traction grips, and I think they fit my hand much better than the stockers. Like Maddog said, installation is easy.

Was there any problem installing them on the Uly? The Buell site says they are not for the XB12X. "Fits '96-later Buell® models (except '96 S2T, '05 XB9SX and '06 XB12X models)."

You have to cut the plugs out of their ends to mount the handguards. Several people here have recommended storing them in the freezer for a few hours and then using a sharp knife like an Exacto to perform the operation, but you can do a pretty good job with a sharp pocket knife.

I use the BMW sport grips. I got used to them over the last few years, and when I went with heated grips, I just put them on.

I have the BMW grips on my Uly and the wife has Traction grips on her CityX - both types are nice.

Being a long time, but now ex-BMW rider, I too got used to their grips

Cheers

PS - I carefully cut the ends out of the Traction grips to fit on the wife's CityX, then, using a cone shaped grinding wheel, I smoothed out the hole, making sure I pay attention to allow for 'free movement' on the throttle side.

Does any one know how to remove the hand guard mounts from the end of the bars?

I want to fit a pair of Acerbis handguards on the bike. The stock ones are useless in a tip over.

FrankF,

Use a pair of pliers, and just pull it straight out. The mount is just a cheap plastic plug. Chances are it will be ruined during extraction, but I think they are $1.80 to replace.

If you have a chance to take some pics/notes during the Acerbis install, I'd love to see them. I'm planning on the same upgrade and would be interested in finding any trouble spots.

I have the Buell Traction Grips and have been pleased with them as well. I highly recommend installing heated grips if you are changing grips anyway.

"The stock ones are useless in a tip over."

I disagree. My bike has tipped over 5 or 6 times since new and I have the original guards. They are scuffed pretty good, but have protected the levers quite well in each case. Acerbis are nice and look tough, but the stockers are more than adequate for anything but Dakar/Baja-type racing.

Not true. The stock guards protected my bar/brake lever in a parking lot tip over a few months ago.

Don't know how you guys can say the stock handguards are any good.

Mine pop off the handle bar stud ever time they have hit the ground.

Mine have popped in tip overs too, but that doesn't mean they didn't take the brunt of the impact. I judge them by the fact that they sustained minor damage while my levers and bars were unhurt. As I said, I have dropped my Uly 5 or 6 times on grass, dirt, gravel and concrete/asphalt. The only damage is some minor scuffing on the hand guards and the plastic bar-end plugs.

I lowsided with mine, and I do think the stock guard did save my clutch lever, although it did end up pulling the plug out of the handlebar. They do OK for what they are, but definitely aren't the same level of protection as the Acerbis ones. On the other hand, the coverage of the stock guards is great and they've kept my hands warm on quite cold rides.

One thing to note with the Acerbis guards (and this may differ depending on which type of guard you install) is that I believe you will need to change or cut-down your brake and clutch levers, as they are too long to be used with the new guards.

I haven't done this myself, but saw that posted somewhere.

Rhino, I just picked up some of those BMW grips, since the "square" grips from the airheads of the 70's-80's are my favorite but hard to get I thought I'd try the oilhead grips.

Gotta trip coming up and thought I'd try them. Since the square grips installed just fine with spit, anything special with the oilhead grips to my Uly? Do I slit and split the originals to get them off, and is the throttle sleeve plastic? Thanks!

Uly Grips

We have used the Buell Traction grips with some success on all of our Buells since 1999.

We just bought the BMW ones that Rhino is using on his bike. Design looks good and they only cost $10 shipped. Which for a BMW part was quite reasonable in our opinion.

Thanks

Xbimmer,
I used a metal scribe tool (long, thin phillips-head screw driver should work also) to separate the glue, and an air compressor to remove the stock grips.

If you don't have access to an air compressor, and you're anywhere in my neighborhood, I'd be more than happy to help out.

The BMW grips mount directly on to the Buell original throttle sleeve - no glue necessary.

I did use some glue on the left side grip.

Cheers
-Jack

I'm using the Traction grips as well. Big improvement, look good, and the installation was a snap.

Thanks for the offer, Rhino, I went ahead and cut the originals off anyway. I hate to waste perfectly good parts but the left side was so glued on it took me 15 minutes with a razor blade to shave all the remaining rubber from the bar.

The Beemer grips feel pretty good, I think I'll like them.
