While doing my pre-ride inspection this afternoon, I noticed my throttle would open, but wouldn't snap shut. On inspection, it looked like the jam nut on the cable closest to the rider had vibrated loose. I messed around with it, and now it's working properly again.

I wanted to properly adjust the cables, but I couldn't find any instructions in the OM. Can someone post them for me? TIA.

I just messed around with them until they felt right. When you are done, you need to start the bike, turn the handle bars from full left to full right while watching the tachometer and make sure the idle RPM does not change. If the idle changes, then you have something too tight and the cables are being pulled when you turn the bars. When the engine is off, do the same thing while you open and close the throttle all the way. Make sure nothing sticks at the handle bar extremes.

Roadrailer,

Pick up a service manual. It is well worth the price. One adjustment and it is more than paid for.

I don't necessarily disagree, but it's kind of odd that such a simple procedure isn't listed in the OM (it was on my SV). They tell you how to change the fluids, set the suspension, even adjust the idle, but not how to take the slack out of the cables?

Can someone post the procedure for me?

Loosen both cables fully.

Open the twistgrip all the way, tighten the "open" cable until the throttle hits the stop.

Close the twistgrip.

Adjust the "close" cable unil there is little/no slack.

Steve,
Manual calls cables "Throttle" & "Idle." Is "Throttle"=Open & "Idle"=Close??

Thanks in advance,
John

Steve,
"Throttle" is on right side of perch (outside) & "Idle" is on left (inside).
John.
Thanks
