I've been planing this trip for a long time
and have finally lined everything up.
The uly is by far the best bike I've ever owned and I'am looking forward to spending
the next two and a half months on the road with it. I don't have to be back in NJ until
the first of August, and only then to meet up with a friend for a trip to sturgis and
glacier NP. This retirement gig ain't too
bad so far! Leaving in 30 minutes.

2_spuds,
Would love to hear about your adventures and how you have outfitted your ride for the trip.
I'm planning to leave for Alaska around this time next year. The Uly is my ride of choice also.
I'm still a working man and only able to swing 30 days of vacation time/kitchen pass.
Having said that, I will have to get the set up right the first time, then ride hard to make my dream IBA ultimate coast to coast a reality.
Ride on; you are living our dream.

2_spuds,

Good deal; can't wait to read your ride reports.

Oh yea, I noticed a nearly new Uly on sale on ebay this week. Reason for selling it listed as something to the effect of "I wanted to ride this bike to Alaska but I can't because it doesn't carry enough fuel". You should be sure and send him a few photos.

Hey 2spuds; I'll be in Glacier Nat'l Park in Early August. Look for an Orange Uly accompanied by a red Moto Guzzi.
Wouldn't it be a gas if two East Coasters named Jackson on Ulys crossed paths 2500 miles from home?

You wouldn't happen to be bringing a laptop with wireless along so that we can travel along, albeit vicariously.

Hello from Jasper Ab,
I am borrowing a lap top for a few minutes so this will be short.I'am having a great time and the uly has been flawless. The more I ride it the more I love it.No problem with gas range, the lowest mpg has been 43 and that was fighting some strong head winds at 75mph.I haven't taken many pics so far, too much fun riding and I am just getting in the really scenic part now.
Crusty, I will be in glacier right after sturgis so I will try to hook up with you somewhere.
Flynuly, I will tell you how I packed and so
on when I can get online longer.
Time to saddle up and ride through Jasper!

Hello from seward!
Having too much fun. The bike is doing great,I had a problem with the front rotor getting a little warped but the dealer in anchorage fixed it in 2 hours, under warranty, and I was on my way.You can't beat that kind of service!
I didn't bring the usb cable for the camera so no pics until I return.
The bike handles anything I put it through.
There is road repair everywhere, gravel, mud rocks and potholes that could hide a moose.
The dunlops are doing a great job also. over 5000mi and there was still tread left to get to the wear bars.
That's it for now, time for a brew and plan for tomorrow.

Just arrived in Dawson yesterday. The ride from Chicken to Dawson was about 108 miles on mostly gravel. The scenery was awsome and so was the bike, what a blast! I must of taken at least 50 pics of the top of the world hyway.I know the pics won't come near to being here. I will try to find a store with a cable so I can post some pics.
If you ever get a chance to visit this place you must, the scale of everything is
unbeleivable. The uly continues to put a huge grin on my face. I'am going to hate to leave here to come home.

2 Spuds,

Just got back from Glacier yesterday.

The road to the sun was closed for consctruction.: (:.

I would hope it will be open for you in Aug. I didn't check before I went, it was kind of an impulse route. It was a awesome 2000 mi ride anyway. Hwy 93 from I-90 to Kalispell was tore up for construction also for about 20 mi. but it was OK.

Enjoy! I sure did.

BTW, met up with Windrider, did some twisties and some gravel to Centerville, ID. Also some gravel in Glacier. The Uly was ran and rode flawless and absolutly rocks!!!

Jerry.

I finally made it home, the return trip turned into one breakdown after another.
The problems started when the rear wheel bearings took a dump 80 klicks north of Fort Nelson on the Al Can. After a 6 hour wait for the tow truck it was towed into FT nelson,$300.00 The next day it was shipped via truck to Prince George.$450.00 I followed it on a grey hound bus $200.00
After I left the dealer the belt broke the next day, then it was the kickstand, then it was a nice gash in the tire. That's when I was lucky enough to rent a u haul truck,$1500.00 to get it home myself without making all the wrecker drivers across the country rich.
I'am getting the road king ready for the trip to sturgis,I lost confidence in the uly. As a side note I the towing service from brag was a joke,I am still waiting for them to return calls, you will probably die on the road before they send help. I also called customer service and the woman I spoke with forwarded my call to a fax machine,I guess that is how they handle complaints.

Yikes! Be very careful, at that rate a plane will fall out of the sky on top of you while walking out of the garage...

P.S. Maybe it's time to get a rabbit's foot or something.

P.P.S. Glad you made it back safely!

Wheel bearings failed? Any idea why? (I had that happen to the Marchesini rear wheel on my S2). This is troubling. I would have thought the design of the XB swingarm would make alignment issues moot and would thereby increase bearing life.

As for belts, several of the new "lifetime" belts have failed. Although mine has not failed the interior "cap layer" has come loose on one of the "teeth". Seems to work fine, I'm unsure what to do about it.

The kickstand will get resolved in time. I just hope my bike doesn't fall over into a person or something valuable in the interim.

I too have issues with the BRAG towing coverage/program. I won't be renewing. I have been involved in a few bike "rescue" incidents and the U-Haul truck always ends up being the best option (if you can get one). You get home and so does your bike.

Regards,

Jim in Santa Barbara
