Doing research on panniers. Anybody out there installed Happy-Trail panniers on your Ulysses? As per phone conversation last month, Jesse pannier(#1 choice) is still in the R&D stage. No production date at this time. TIA for any info.

Not to dismiss Jesse's bags I would suggest a few things...

Read on advrider about the V-strom folks experience with Jesse's bags.

Also take a close look at Al's GS mounting brackets. The GS being his primary business from what I understand.

My opinions after looking at these two things (I owned a GS).

The V-strom owners had a lot of problems with Al early on. He seems to have sorted it out, but I'm not sure I would want to be the first to try out his setup for the Uly. FWIW, many of the V-strom owners were happy with the H-T bags.

The GS mounting brackets, at least on my GS, worked, were very functional. But did have some quirks. I sold my GS to a machinist friend who has spent some time making little spacers and whatnot to get the bags aligned.

I have five bikes with Happy Trails pannier systems on them including my Ulysses which was the trial horse for the first set of Ulysses panniers. I believe they are the best you can buy from a quality and usage point of view. The last time I posted on this subject I think the general tone of reply was that the looks were not to some tastes. I have used these panniers in a number of places in the world under very hard conditions and can't praise them enough. To me function is beauty. ref

I have a friend with the Happy Trails on his V-strom and he loves them and had no issues during the install.
Bison: I'm with you and also believe function equals beauty, thanks for your endorsement. This is the info I need. I will be riding to Alaska next year and the Buell bags look good but if I go down on the Dalton Hwy I don't want my gear spread down the road with no way to get it home. Not knocking the Buell bags(I don't have any)just looking for something that will take the abuse. Do you have any pictures of your bags installed? Web site only shows the view from the back. Can you still use the passenger pegs with the large bags..tetons if I remember right. Or better question which ones do you have installed and size?
Thanks Tim
PS: sorry if this has been discussed previously I will do a search, been a lurker for a while and must have missed your previous post.

I have the largest of the Happy Trails panniers on my Uly. I haul a ton of tools to work every day in them.I'm very satisfied with them. My only complaint would be that I can't put my helmet in them.

Barry,
Are your passenger pegs still functional with the large bags? Don't care if they fold up, only need room for big feet. Any side view pictures out there?

I would say the passenger pegs are not fully functional with the large panniers. With my size 12 boots I can't slide my foot back far enough to rest the balls of my feet on the pegs. You might want to check with the Happy Trails people and see if they can shift the bags back somewhat on the mounting rack.

Ok, good to know. When I order the bags I will elect not to get them pre-mounted. Gives me $40 in my pocket for some other project.
