How do I make my Uly carburate flawlessly? I would like to have it run as if there were no EPA regs to follow, but still be as quiet as stock. On my M2, I replaced the needle and low speed jet, and it worked fine; but the Uly is injected. From what I gather, If I put the race kit on, it will run much better; the only problem with that is that I want to keep the stock muffler. Would the race ECM alone do the trick? Is there an easy or simple way to make it run right without a lot of noise? I also don't want to do anything that would void my warranty. Although I wouldn't think that making the bike run right all the time would be considered detrimental.
Anybody have any experience with this?

The only way I could see doing it is with Direct Link and tuning it on a dyno. That way you could keep everything stock and adjust a/f ratio.

Crusty,
DL tuning is the way to go.
I am trying to get a map for the stock setup for riders like you that want the mapping optimized with the stock muffler.
The race ecm will not work with the stock muffler

I've been running with my Race ECM, and it feels pretty good. Does anyone out there have a reprogrammed race ECU? If so, what was the difference? Did it kill the fuel mileage?

My only issue with the factory race kit has been cold starts. When I start the bike cold, it will barely idle and sometimes stall. If I turn up the idle, it runs fine, but when the engine gets warm the RPMs "hang" around 2,000 before falling back down to 1000. I then have to lower the idle.

Really shouldn't have to do that on a fuel injected engine.

Chad,
I have the race kit + a "Map 2" Direct Link reprogramme of the race ECM. Cold starts are like my '04 Sporty 12R w/ the choke, only better.

Get 45-45 mpg on the Uly. V good low speed driveability (12-1500 r's). Overall, very satisfied. Got EXACTLY what I asked for from DaveS.

Steve,
The Uly Race Kit Exhaust, the reprogrammed Race ECU & the Race air cleaner. DaveS has a dyno chart somewhere in the archives with this setup. Can e-mail it to you if you like.

It's a NICE setup, FOR ME. Excellent low end, solid at 2-3000 + the big hit +/- 4000 which I don't care about. The Uly replaced my R12GS &, for me, is better. Hated the power brakes & it left me stranded (1st time in 45 years) ONCE. Since we are moving to Namibia, can't trust it, it's gone.

DaveS treated me right. GREAT guy.

I'd LOVE to see the dyno charts. I bought my Race Kit from Daves, but elected to leave it alone as the programming with the key was going to be pricey.

If it makes a BIG difference, then I'd be interested in doing it, if it's only a few ponies here or there, then I'll keep things the way they are.

Chad & All,

The definitions below the chart say, for the RED, "RACE KIT 4TH GEAR RUN MAP 2."

It's the full Race Kit (pipe, ECU & air cleaner) with the race ECU enhanced by DirectLink to Map 2.

This chart was pointed out to me by DaveS when I told him I wanted QUIET & BETTER LOW END.

As stated above, I got exactly what I wanted. Worth the $$ TO ME.

Namibian....
Do you find that the Buell race pipe as load as the Micron full system (a quiet rumble would be nice)? I would assume the factory race pipe to be loader than a stock pipe. Also, does the factory race pipe retain the exhaust valve or is that gone with the race pipe? It looks like the race pipe from Buell is cheaper than the Micron system with only a loss of say 6 hp. $ for $, it looks like a better deal for the factory race setup. Micron system = 800. Factory race pipe, ECM & filter = 700.

Whitj,
Never heard a full Micron system BUT the Race Kit does have a quiet rumble. It is LOUDER than stock but not by much.

The exhaust valve is gone on the Race kit.

Forget horsepower, say TORQUE. My set-up pulls cleanly from 12-1500 r's. Shifts nicely at 3000 & pulls like a tractor. Occasionally shift at 4000 & then it REALLY PULLS!

Check out the exhaust shoot-out here (when posted, probably in XB Forum) & then call Dave Steuve at Appleton H-D Buell (I am NOT affiliated, just a satisfied customer), a sponsor here, & he can advise you on Race Kit & Micron.

Full Micron system. Sounds great but maybe too load for some. American Sport Bike sells them too.

By the way, thx Namibian for the info.
