My Uly is pinging badly. I read the entire thread on pinging in the technical section, but there was never a solution posted. I am taking my Uly for the 1000 mile service next week, and I want ammo. How common is this? HAS ANYBODY ACTUALLY SOLVED THE PROBLEM ON THEIR BIKE? If so, what was the solution?

I backed my timing of just a hair and it helped some. However, if I'm sitting in a lot of stop and go traffic, it still pings/knocks/detonates when accelerating. I just installed the race kit last night. Hopefully with it running a bit richer, it will solve all but the most extreme conditions.

I have never had mine make any pinging/predetonation noises. Sounds like your timing is off a bit.

44 mag,
I found the solution to my pinging problem. By retarding the timing about 3 degrees and resetting the TPS I corrected my pinging problem. The diameter of the inner timing cone is 78mm if you multiply that by 3.14 you get the circumference of 244.92mm. Divide 244.92mm by 720 (2*360)and you get .3402mm for each crank shaft degree. Therefor if you move the timing plate 1mm counterclockwise measured at the outside of the timing plate base, then you will retard the timing by 3 degrees (approx). Be sure to lightly mark/scratch the base plate and the inner cone with a fine pointed pick tool to index the factory setting before you move the base. Then you can always return to the factory setting. You will need a drill with a 1/8" drill bit, a #2 phillips screw driver, a large flat head screw driver, a pop rivet gun, and two "harley" pop rivets. If you reset the TPS you will need a computer and VDSTS software ($200.00). Then you can tell the dealership to call you if they have a problem! My timing was a little early (advanced) from the factory. If you are interested in the procedure I used to determine the factory timing then just chime in. I am not certified mechanic and I did NOT stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Good Luck!

Davo,
Thanks for the info! I will ask the dealer to fix first, but if they can't solve the problem I will try retarding the timing myself.

It would be cool if folks that have a VDSTS could post their location and you could go to the nearest one and get a TPS reset. I am in Blackstone, VA., about 100 miles north of Raleigh. The pinging problem is probably not the TPS alone. Mine was only off by .2 of one degree at the 3000 mi. mark.

I've got the software and am in Nashville, TN. I'd be happy to offer my services.
