Hi folks Just wondering if you can tell me how to fix the engine "hunting" at low constant speeds. eg 35 mph. It is only very slightly noticeable but I believe it is a common problem. |

TPS reset perhaps? What gear are you in at that speed? |

What is involved in a TPS reset? I am in 4th gear. |

Hi Flog, We are in the process of trying to figure that out over in this thread. So far new definite answer, but it would be good if you could post your symptoms so we have more info. Thanks, Jim |

4th sounds a little high for 35 MPH...perhaps that is part of it? (Message edited by lovematt on April 23, 2006) |

"No its not" yes, yes it is. 35mph in 4th gear is lugging the engine around 1700rpms and its not that happy, itll do it, but its not in its happy place. the surging MIGHT be an indication that a guy should use that lever located on the left side of the motorcycle, down near a guys left foot and push down on it a couple times...ladies too chris |

I think its closer to 1800 or 1900 rpm's at 35. I shift mine to forth at 35. It is not lugging the engine at all it pulls it just fine. |

gotta agree that its to tall.. even the Owners manual says 40 to shift to 4th.... I don't shift to 4th until well past 40....I like to keep the rpms between 3K-4K.... just seems to run well there (at least for me). |

rotflmfao, fair enough boss, fair enough. in city traffic (35mph) i like to keep it a little higher up the rev range in case i need some power to avoid people trying to kill me. if it pulls well from 1800rpms for you, id reckon you ride a horse around a track for a job. |

I don't give the engine any power to speak of at rpms below 3k. I will "cruise" between 2500 - 3000rpm if on level or descending terrain. 1900 rpm? I've got to believe that's the problem. You can get away with that more in lower gears than in higher gears, but I simply wouldn't do it. I just rode 350 miles today. My Uly now has nearly 2700 miles and it has never pulled harder. It is really ripping out some serious torque right now. Also did about 100 miles of gravel/dirt roads. Fun stuff. Mileage ran around 46 - 47mpg today. Best, Jim in Santa Barbara |

I agree, 4th is way too tall at that speed. Keep it around 3,000 rpm while cruising and it will smooth right out. |

4th gear at 35 mph - what for? If you want to putt, buy a hog. If you want gas mileage, buy a smaller bike! |

I agree that in it's current state of tune 4th gear is too tall to comfortably run at 35 mph. However it also seems that the bike makes enough torque at that rpm that it should be able to run smoothly at that rpm/gear combo, at least cruising if that's how you like to ride. I certainly wouldn't whack the throttle open from below 2k in 4th. But 2nd gear roll-on's from 30-35mph is sure fun (Message edited by Huxley on April 24, 2006) |

FWIW, if this is the same problem described in the thread I linked to, you don't have to be running 35 in 4th to hit it. So flog, if you run at about 3100 rpm and hold a constant speed, does the sensation you are describing occur? Paticularly in lower gears? |

35 in 4th gear? Holy Moses, that's too slow in that gear. I've found that anything south of 2500 rpm is bad ju-ju on the Ulysses. The motor begins to get happy at about 3500rpm and is fine from there up. I try to keep it spinning between 3500 and 4000 no matter what my cruising speed. Even running 80mph, the engine is right at 4000rpm. It's really happy there for hours on end. I did find the thread on the fuel pump interesting. I've got the low idle condition, and I can CLEARLY hear the fuel pump running. It doesn't run at a constant speed either...more like a "weeeeeeeeeee, wurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, wurrrrrrrrrrrrr" (best I can do in writing). The drop in fuel pump speed corresponds to the bike stalling. I can hear it before it happens. But it runs fine when it's warm, which is what doesn't make sense to me. If you want to putt, buy a hog. If you want gas mileage, buy a smaller bike! I have a Road King Custom which I enjoy a putt on and also an MV Agusta Brutale (awesome sikle in the twisties!) which by the way is happy when in slow traffic trickling along at 35 MPH in 5th gear. That's the situation with the Uly ie trickling along in traffic, constant speed, flat road, not on the gas or off it, just mooching along. The surging effect by the way tends to happen at 40 and 45 MPH in 4th too. Go figure! |
