Simply stated: I am 6'3" and have been riding a XB12 Lightning for 7600 miles. I would like to go for the Uly but am a bit worried that it won't be as "sporty" as my current ride. I know the SS is out there but there aren't any provisions for hard bags. Anyone have an insight? NUTS

Hi Nuts,

With your height, I can imagine you feel pretty cramped on the Lightening after a while in the saddle. However, being used to the Lightening you will immediately notice a huge difference in riding position and at first you will feel a little top-heavy because the Uly is so tall.
Once you get used to it, I think you'll like the difference.

The full race XBRR uses the stock Ulysses frame so I don't think you'll be any less sporty on the Uly once you set the suspension how you like it.

I've heard you can pull consistant 100 RWHP with bolt-ons and a reprogram via dyno tuning. I find the front wheel likes to catch air a lot and mine is still bone stock!

Have some coolaid and go for a test ride!

I started with the Uly then got the 12S for the wife.

However I spent a lot of seat time on the S, and then back to the Uly, and I found the Uly to be more sporty, I like how I can really lean it into the turns, I like the better rear shock, I like the longer travel suspension, I love how easy it is to wheelie the Uly, I like the handlebar position better, I like the much more smooth ride, it doesnt bounce and make me want to pee all the time.

And if you ever want to do the 50 most awesome miles of pavement in Baja, you wont want to be on the S.

After speaking with my buddy at the local dealership I'm presented with yet another hiccup. They have a used xb12Ss (Lightning long) with only 300 miles that I could get a really good deal on. Versus spending MSRP on the Uly? Extended test rides are definitely in order. NUTS

I went from a Lightning to a Ulysses ,but if you are not going to carry a passenger I would also look at the Long.

Jason,I went from a 12S to a 12X and do not regret the move. Comfort+distance greatly improved.Line up a test ride.If you ride a passenger take them also. Have fun.

I wouldn't worry about sacrificing any "sporty" qualities buy getting the Uly. On any day of the week, the Ulysses is just sporty as XB12S or the XB12Slong.

When the Ulysses was first launched, I was also concerned about the "Buellness" of the new Buell. Two track days, a pair of knee pucks and a hundred ear-to-ear grins later, This bike delivers. It dosen't get much sportier than a track day...
Enjoy

FWIW I just looked at the specs for the 12X, 12SS, and 12S on buell.com. The wheelbase, rake and trail, are almost identical for the SS and the Uly. The 12S is is 2 inches shorter, and has less trail and rake.

I would expect this to mean the SS will handle much closer to the way a Uly does than it does to a 12S.

I used to ride a 12S. Last September I was asked by my Buelldealer to break in a stock Uly so they would have a demobike for their Buell weekend. Last month he sold me a new Uly. I love it!!

SS & Uly are the same frame..diff fork/shock setup, obviously...

I have the Ss, and will probably go to the Uly in a year or so..it'd be nice to take the wife on some road trips..

Love the Ss..

I have to say my 12S pushes all the right buttons for me on any ride under 100 miles. The inherent problem is that my riding appetite wants more than what the lightning is willing to give. I sat on the Ss today against the Uly and found that the extra room I'm looking for is not to be had. I'm Uly bound and just working out the details. Does anyone have any idea why Buell isn't offering any better incentives for purchases? I'm not just whining for an "unbelievable deal"; but seriously 11 percent with a beacon score over 700? C'mon now I really want that Uly but unless I'm getting 8K for my Lightning.... It begins. NUTS

Hey Nuts,

Try your financing on the outside of the dealer. Many dealers try to get a couple extra points. Mine tried that on me even after three bikes in three years from them.

I told my sales guy that he was over the line and somehow by chance it seems that the finance dept. came back with 2 points lower than quoted!

The sales people there are A-holes and don't like me because I paid the first bike off way early and paid cash for the second bike. That cuts into their bottom line since they lost the points.

They'll never admit to that but I know it to be a fact. I guess they gave up on the points when I said I would just pay off early if they tried to get the extra points on the deal.

Thieves and robbers usually win with the I want one bad crowd but I don't play that game anymore. Tell them to deal or pack sand.

I have friends who just get a low interest home equity loan. Or you could do what I did. I got a signature loan with a little higher rate (8%), but I hold the title and don't have to hassle with getting the title released and junk when I sell the bike. I typically only keep a bike two years, then I sell it.

Thanks, I basically think the whole thing sucks. No wonder Buell can't get younger riders on bikes. I completely believe in the product and would only stray for an incredible deal elsewhere (KTM, BMW.) But I got the final numbers today and was disgusted. 72 months, 9.9% with 10% down. Now add in my negative equity and I find myself astride my trusty Lightning. I sincerely appreciate all the advise given and hope to one day call this page home but for now the wife's school loans take precedent. NUTS

Yes life can be lousy on occassion. Today wasn't one of those for me. My first real nice weather ride today. Fantastic. That Uly is the ticket, and I bought the weekend pass too. Nicest bike I have ever ridden, all around. It just produces full face sh t eating grins. Not many bikes will ever do that to anybody but this bike speaks. I noticed it turned in a little too quick so I get off and turn the suspension handle out 2 turns and bingo it's perfect. Many bikes are never suspension tuned properly. The Uly makes it so easy. Great bike without a doubt.

Nutsosane; Did you try any alternatives to a dealer? A co-worker just bought a new Suzuki Bulgemobile this week. The numbers the dealership was offering were way too high, so he went to a bank. I think the difference was close to 4%.
Of course, if all else fails, having to ride a Lightning isn't what I'd call punishment, either.

The credit union from my old home town ( I just closed an inactive account there a while back)called to say they saw I bought a new Buell and thought they could beat the rate I got from the dealer. I did the 0 down 0%financing for 3 months deal so I could pay off some other bills before summer. Excellent credit and the bastards charged 9.9% It almost broke the deal on my Uly but I figured I could re-do the loan somewhere else later. I'm getting 6.2% from the credit union and the Gap insurance is cheaper. It also includes $1000 toward a new bike purchase (if the uly gets totalled of stolen) if I do the loan with them). I did ask how they got the info on my new bike purchase. The loan officer told me they buy the info and Are able to re-do most dealership loans because of the more attractive rates. I'm glad I did'nt hang up on the guy.
