i just got back from my 1k tune ($315) and it still hurts to sit. they fools didnt think they had to do a tps reset, whatever the stink that is, till they went and looked at the manual. 2 bolts that hold the airbox cover on had fallen out and they made it seem like them replacing them for free was doing me a HUGE favor or something. ive never taken the airbox cover off and the bolts obviously werent loctited or something. im still getting 34 freaking mpg and it vexes me to no end. any of yall have an idea what it might be or have any suggestions, other than me losing 70lbs? :P | ||

$315 is a lot. You should expect to get techs who know what they are doing for that. Is there another dealer near you? | ||

How do you ride? I get close to 50mpg on the interstate(45-49 at 80-85mph) and around 45mpg in town and that is not conservative riding but not wide open either. My first service was $199 and they gave me a $50 coupon for my first service so it ended up being $149. The air box cover screws in my bike had so much lock tight one broke off in the frame. Now it will have to be drilled and helicoiled wooohooo!! | ||

I got 47 mpg today on a 100-mile fun ride - mostly highway, but a lot of 100+ mph passing , throttle blipping, gratuitous revving and other tomfoolery. I can see no reason for 34 mpgs. I would start looking for dragging brakes, clogged injectors, plugs, air filter, etc... $250 for my first service and they did an excellent job. So far, I have had no complaints in 4k miles. | ||

The lowest mpg I every got was 46 mpg. First service $231. It sounds like an overpaid, lack of talent dealer you're dealing with. According to your profile , you live in the St.Paul area. If I could suggest the Donahue, Sauk Rapids, MN. dealership. The owner is Brett Donahue. He did some racing and is into IronButt events. He just completed the '05 IronButt rally on a Sportster. (well almost, the sporty froze up on him and he finished on a rented Ultra.) There were rumors that he was going to setup a Uly for future events. You could contact him, explain your problem and hopefully get your Uly in proper running condition. I believe that there is a shop employee that has been riding a Uly to local endurance rallies also. Maybe a complaint to Buell headquarters is in order. | ||

I get 40+ MPG on my 120rwhp X1. No way you should get 30's out of any Buell, without effort and that goal. | ||

Sounds like you paid for twice and got half on your first service.... I would search out a dealer that will give you a knowledgeable mechanic for half that cost and get your bike sorted out. I think that something is wrong with it to deliver that kind of fuel economy. Other riders have reported better economy riding 2 up @ 80 MPH with luggage! I don't think that your weight/size can explain it. If you took the Ulysses riders of America you would probably get a group that would make a good basketball team: most of the Uly riders are tall. Were I you I would call Buell factory service and see if they can help you out. Happy Trails. | ||

thanks guys. i appreciate the replies. after a tour of the minnesota river valley today (st croix river) at a moderate 65-75mph, i returned, once again, with 34 mpg. i shall call the factory tomorrow...good idea chaps. thanks im riding around the lakes in minneapolis and the ladies are out running in lycra leggings...im really enjoying the ride. i spot this one long haired brunette with the finest rear end ive seen all day and as i passed her, i looked in the mirrors and then had to do a double take...there was a 5-o'clock shadow, an adams apple and another apple about 2.5 feet lower. im now forced to drink a liter of johnny walker red tonight as penance for the heinous deed...i am also blind for 48 hours. men shouldnt have hair down to their waist.  chris | ||

I also got Low 30's as far as mileage when I got my Uly. I was pretty disappointed to see a range of 130 miles on a bike that is sooo much fun. Now that I have over 1000 miles on the bike, and not riding in serious headwinds, my mileage has gone up to the mid 40's now. | ||

My first 3 fuel-ups when my bike was new I was only getting low 30s... it has gone up now to about 40mpg... but I still have under 400 miles on the xb12s. | ||

alrighty then... 1500 miles, synthetic oil. 32mpg at the last fuel up tonight. where might i find factory service's number as it dawned on me today at work that i had no idea how to contact them? i checked the buell website and i came up empty handed. i really am not this incompetent in real life. :P thanks, chris btw. slab at 75mph. the rest of the time at 30mph touring some local lakes and such. i drive it like miss daisy. Another thought. Since the techs didn't seem to know about the TPS reset, maybe they didn't check the timing either. It seems that alot of Ulys are not properly timed from the factory. I have an S3T that was improperly timed. It was hard to start, but never missed a beat. I had it in for service, mentioned the starting problem, and found out that Buell issued a shop service bulletin on the timing issue. Now it starts and runs perfectly. 50-54 mpg consistently. | ||

Are you doing the calcs right?" not really. :P about 130 miles per tank, 3.7-4 gallons of fuel to fill er' up. im not that good at math, but once i converted the coefficient of friction to milliamps, i was ok. i also rounded pi off to 2 decimal place, not 6 like i should have done in the first place, so that threw me off for a while. screw it, i bet im not putting enough oil on the belt so im getting insane amounts of parasitic drag...should be easy enough to remedy. thanks, chris o2 sensor, timing, injectors, check plugs. thanks guys...oh yeah, double check my math too. | ||

Grimace, I wasn't having a go at you...just saying something's wrong, but I guess you already know that by now...I've simply never heard of it before. If a dealer put the digital technician (handheld ecm reader) on it and the AFV was maxed out at 118 or whatever it maxes out to then that would explain it. Then they need to find the cause, a failing O2 sensor could do that as Stormtrooper hinted, the output would drop and the ecm would pump in more fuel to bring it up again. | ||

Grimace, One more thing to think about. I once had a leaking petcock (no jokes needed, I've heard them all) on a 1984 CB700SC (Nighthawk S) that dropped my gas milage down into the upper 20s. After I fixed it, I was back around 52 miles per gallon. Just a thought. Might look around and see if the gasoline is getting out somewhere. For instance, if you fill it up too much and the gas expands it might be getting out of the overflow tube. I'm just grasping at straws here. Paul |
