Has anyone used or seen one of these pumps? I'm looking for a reliable, compact 12V pump for to carry under the seat on my Uly.

http//www.cyclepump.com

http//www.store.yahoo.com/webmountainbike/eltirpum.html

The cyclepump costs more ($80-$100+) & is made in the USA.

The slime pump (sounds like a bad dream) costs about $39 at Cycle Gear.

I think the cyclepump would fit nicely under my seat. 2"X4"X6". Sounds like a nice piece.

I dont know the dim's of the slime pump.

I know someone out there has an opinion....you guys always do.: )

My buddy has one of those cheap $19 walmart pumps under the seat of his ZRX to fill his air shifter tank. He took the plastic covers off of it and just installed the motor/compressor. He also has a line he can hook up to it to fill his tires.

I use this 12v portable from campbell hausfeld, it's about 5"x5"x2" and cost about $10 from the local auto store.
The guts look identical to the expensive one. I also carry a small hand pump from my
mountain bike. Both fit under the seat with room to spare.

Motorcycle Consumer News had a nice article on just that subject:

http://www.mcnews.com/mcn/features/Mini%2012%20Volt%20Compressor.pdf

Let me add my recommendations for MCN subscription as well. They have a lot of good info - and some not so good. But at least they're not dictated by advertising $$.

Thanks for the links, Sleez.

I like the Airman Sparrow. The price is right.($23.99!) Also has a built-in guage. I wish it came with a padded storage pouch, though.

I still like the Cycle pump but I could buy three Airman sparrows for the price of one Cycle pump.It also comes with a nice storage pouch.

Thanks everyone, I've seen the article on disassembling the larger pump and reassembling into a smaller unit. Clever. Might be kind of a fun project also.

But there seem to be alot of functional, inexpensive choices out there (like 2 Spud's), BTW,thanks for the photo.

Now I gots to make a decision.

Hi guys,

For my dual sport DRZ I like one of the Genuine Innovations repair kits - the one that comes with everything you need to patch a tube or tubeless tire (you never know what your unprepared buddy is riding), has CO2 cartridges *and* the pump (which uses the CO2) doubles as a hand pump if you run out of CO2.

For the Ulysses I have a typical CO2 cartridge repair kit - which I had to use the day I bought the bike - and now I'll add one of these little tire inflators. Great idea, perfect for under the seat.

If you're going to do some serious riding far from civilization - which I do from time to time - you must be prepared. How far? Some stretches we ride might have us as far 50 miles on gravel roads through the mountains until we reach anything resembling civilization.

That's a long way to walk.

Regards,

Jim in Santa Barbara

Jim,
I carry the Genuine Innovations kit like yours on all my street bikes. My friends and I have "saved the ride" several times with these.

But for airing up your tires after a 100mi. gravel road (Magruder Corridor in Idaho, for example), you do not want to deplete your emer. kit.

I' m also not fond of the idea of stashing my bike and gear in the woods then riding "bitch" on my buddies bike for lack of an inexpensive, simple item.

Being independent and prepaired allows me to focus on having a good time and maybe going a little farther from civilization.

Hi DeBueller,

My point with the GI kit was that it can't be "depleted" because the pump doubles as a hand pump. That's why I like it so much. You can fix a lot of flats in one ride. Why? The desert has cacti, and the cacti bite! <g>

Like I said, I'm gonna buy one of these small electric air pumps as well. For $10 or $20, why not?

Regards,

Jim in SB

I'm going to order the Airman Sparrow. I'ts $23.99 + S&H. Seems like a good buy. Thanks Sleez.

The Cambell Hausfeld looks good also, but I'm too lazy to go hunting for it at retail stores. $10 would be a small investment as well.

I'm also too lazy to use my hand pump unless it's absolutely necessary.

Thanks all.

have had a cyclepump for 2 years have never
had to inflate from empty but it makes adjustments very quick and easy.
also have the gauge with the flex hose, the pump fits right into it and you can inflate watching the pressure gauge and stop it at the desired pressure with no quess work. it is portable enough that I always take it on trips.

I have a Cyclepump, highly recommended. I used it to re-inflate my brother's GL1800 rear tire in the middle of Kansas last summer. This was after I plugged it with a Stop-n-go plug.

Cyclepump is the way to go. The rest are junk. You get exactly what you pay for.
