What did you pay for your 1,000-mile service. I have an appointment in the morning, and called the dealership today to ask a few questions. While I was talking to the service guy I asked the cost of the service. He said $190, which is consistent with what I had been told by another tech a few weeks ago. A few hours later he left a message on my machine at home that he had been mistaken, and that the cost of the Uly service was $250, since they had to do "a few other things." First thing I did was call the dealership's other location (they have two in town). They confirmed the cost of the service was $190. I had decided to go ahead and drop the bike off tonight, so when I arrived I asked the tech why it cost more. He again said that they had to do a few extra things to it, and that he had given me the sporty price. When I asked him what they had to do, he starts going on about it being a sport bike, and they needed to check the suspension. When I asked what on the suspension needed extra checking, he mutters something about the "neck bearing." Then I mentioned that I had been quoted $190 for the service several times, including a few minutes previous by the other location. He blabbers angrily for a few seconds, then writes "quoted $190" on the sheet. Does any of this make sense? Seems like checking suspension parts and steering head bearings (assuming that's what he meant)would be part of any first service. | ||

My 1K service was about $200. They had to adjust the timing in addition to the usual stuff but I don't recall of I was billed for a little extra labor there or not...I don't think I was. The shop should have a rate schedule for regular service conspicuously posted...helps avoid misunderstandings, IMO. | ||

I'll have to dig out my receipt, but I think I got grilled at or above the $250 figure up at Smoky Mtn Harley/Buell. If it was over that by a significant margin I'll post again, but I remember it really stung. I think they justified it by saying, well, we're a "Harley dealer", or something profound like that. Honestly if they had justified it based on steering stem bearing adjustment (and no, I don't think they did anything to mine), at least that would make sense since not allot of "real" Harleys wheelie like a Buell can... | ||

2old- My experience has been that the folks at Smoky Mtn, Tilley's and Carolina HD are generally liars, cheaters, crooks and thieves (sounds like an old Cher song). | ||

First service was "free". Although I paid list for my bike, since I wanted it bad and availability wasn't great back in September. | ||

I was just quoted $300 for the first service. Costs more if I want synthetic. Sheesh. I must be living in California. Hopefully this will be the last time a dealer services my bike. It seems like a lot of money for the work involved. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara | ||

I thought I was getting ripped off at $190!!! | ||

Have not had my first service yet but the dealer discounted my Uly to $10,900 out the door, added the bags and tour pak (a grand$) and gave me top NADA retail price for my 2000 FLSTC. Just had a scary thought. Maybe my first service is going to be $1000 to make up for it. | ||

I can't believe it but it seems that for the first time ever something Buell is cheaper in the UK. I paid a big fat Zero for my 1000 mile service. They even gave me a free litre of oil and a cup of coffee. | ||

Okay, For the record I did the first oil and filter change myself at just over 1,000 miles. Took the bike in Sat. morning to my local HD/Buell dealership for a "while-U-wait" service. No other reasonable option for me. Anyway..... I told 'em don't change the oil and filter - I've already done that - but change the primary (and use the 'good stuff'). Their sign says "shop rate $85 / hour". Yowza! The labor was $212.50, plus lubricants, gaskets etc. total was $230.40. I asked them to check the steering head tension (I get a minor wobble on decel at 45mph in 5th hands off the bars), check the oil lines (some oil misting is evident) and I asked them to check the timing because it pings a little bit every now and then, especially if I'm getting on it. They said the steering neck was at the high end of spec, that they cleaned up the misting and didn't see any after their test ride and told me the timing wasn't adjustable. Then I got the "fuel lecture". I only buy premium but was told I really need to buy only Chevron or 76. Geez guys, I ride in the mountains and back country and sometimes there's only one station in town and you get what you get. But so far I've only used Texaco, Shell, Mobil, Chevron and 76. Always premium. Then I got home and found out the timing is adjustable (static timing) but I have to have the fancy computer to do that, so I can't check it. Darn it. Ah well, 3 hours later I was on my way home in light rain. Got on the gas at one point and she pinged a little bit. Not sure what to do about that other than to ride the bike and monitor the situation. All things considered I've given them a chance to look at the bike and Buell has pronounced it okay so I'll just take over the maint. chores from here. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |
