Lowflyer, you need to see if you can go an entire week without using the word "gay" in a post.

I know, it may be tough for you to do, but you're on the edge and in danger of falling in...

Regards,

Jim in Santa Barbara

Jim,

If my saying orange is gay bothers you, then you now know how I feel about the orange v. black argument. It is as stupid and as base as saying orange is gay. I'm just playing the game in a manner that amuses me.

I've had several BMWs and most of my friends own them. I'd like to have a XB12X, but I can't handle the seat height (why, oh why is the seat so high? This thing isn't going off-road on 17" rims...). So instead, I'm pondering a XB12Ss or XB9S (neither of which have hard bags and both have handling "issues", so I'm very undecided).

The biggest problem with the BMWs is that service costs a fortune. Even if you are a skilled DIY'er, you can't do squat on the BMW without the computer.

Want to sync the throttle bodies? Need the computer.

Want to bleed the brakes? Need the computer. Ask what the dealership wants for this. You'll be shocked (access to the ABS pump is not pleasant, neither is is the bleeding procedure).

I've synced the TB's on a hexhead myself with good results.

I've also bled/flushed the servo brakes myself with good results.

It takes some knowledge. But it's doable.

Where things get tough, is if something goes wrong.

synching the tb's on a boxer does not need the computer. a set of carb stix or a twinmax will do the job fine. I have done many valve adjusts and tb synchs on oilhead models, and still do it on an airhead. It is balancing the vacuum, which balances the tb's.
Not exactly rocket science.

The "hexhead" has stepper motors to control idle sync. The service manual says you are to park these in a known spot using the special diag tool before balancing the TBs.

Most have found that ignoring this "special step" works just fine. But there are a few truly anal that are trying to replicate the factory procedure.

My 12GS was a lot less particular to it's state of tune than my 1150RT. The 12GS just runs right.
