I dont own a laptop, and wondered how cheap I can go for a laptop that would be compatible with the stuff sold at American Sport Bike. If I can get by with a used one, that is fine by me.
Could anyone with the minimum requirements let me know?

The software also runs on PDA's which would only be about $200 to $250 for a Palm.

It requires more room than a laptop, but you can also run it from a standard PC.

Lowflyer, can you explain your comment a little further? As a software engineer, I
have no idea what "requires more room" means.

RAM? Disk Space?

I can't imagine the application requires much of either, and since it's a receiving data over a standard serial port, would guess that data rates are fairly low.

It would seem a very low end machine should be able to run this (Win98 w/64MB RAM?) although this is purely speculation.

As a software engineer myself I can see your confusion. : D I think he's talking about real physical room. A desktop tends to need more *space* (volume) than a laptop.

The PDA version has pretty low requirements as well, $50-100 for a PDA is more in line. But I thought I had read here that the PDA version is less stable.

Look here, click on "more details" for specifics.

Thanks Steven. I get it. Something like:

"You can also run this on a standard PC, although that requires more room than a laptop."

I was reading it as:

It (the software) requires more room than a laptop, but you can also run it from a standard PC.

which didn't make any sense to me at all.

Of course, by the end of the workday and meetings with management, not much makes sense.

I work with software engineers, so I understand your confusion too.

If I had meant that it requires more drive space or memory, I would have referred to it as needing more drive space or memory. As it stands, I said that it requires more 'room' from which I believe 99.9% of the population would infer a larger workspace given the obvious physical size difference between a desktop and a notebook computer.

Well I am not a "Software Engineer", just a life long "Mechanic" but, I did hear and understood Lee's answer and Gale's question! Gale, just go to Technoresearch's web site and download the manual. Piece of cake, just about anything that can run Windows 95 or newer, will work. OH, WATCH OUT FOR THE STEPPENWOLF DOWNLOAD!

I think it was the ambiguous dual use of the pronoun "it" that caused me confusion.

The question from Gale ended with

"Could anyone with the minimum requirements let me know?"

It is implied that the the "minimum requirements" are for the laptop that is going to run the software.

Since the response said "It requires more room than a laptop," the "it" obviously doesn't refer to the laptop since it's explicitly stated, so I mapped it to the other object in the question being answered (the software.)

The second use of "it" clearly refers to the software, so that would make the use of the pronoun consistent across the two segments of the sentence.

Perhaps my email could have put it better if I said "His question was pretty clear, but his answer confused me."

I Suppose I should credit your fine use of english to the world renown Kansas Board of Education.

Lowflyer, you're absolutely right. I got your meaning wrong.

Your insults are useless against me. I am in management.

You could credit Kansas, if this was my state of origin. It is not. By using the pronoun 'it' in the previous sentence, I am referring to my state of origin.

I running it on a VERY old Toshiba laptop with 64mb of RAM and a 400mhz processor. I'm using Windows98 as the OS. It's a piece of crap laptop that I don't have to worry about dropping and breaking or getting greasy.

I'd say head over to eBay and pick up a used laptop there. Anything made in the last 5 years should do nicely. I think the one I'm using is from 1999. You should be able to pick up an old laptop for a song.

Just make sure it has a 9 pin seral port on it. If not, you'll have to buy a USB to DB9 converter.

There's a Dell running exec 200 on there right now for $225. It has a pretty good sized screen, too.

Look at Toughbooks if you want a real industrial strength laptop. A little extra bulk and weight but the splash proof keyboard and better than average daylight viewing make them great for use around the shop.

And the prices aren't too bad on the P-3 and older ones.

Gale - Email me at jacker at midmaine dot com, I have an IBM Thinkpad 365XD that you can have for the shipping costs.

It is a P-II/133mHz running Windows 98 SE. It has the memory maxed out, a reasonable sized hard drive, a read only CD-ROM drive, an external floppy drive, and a hardware (DB9P) serial port connector (no USB).

Display is good, and it was in use until it was parked some time back. It has minor case damage but is still usable and the battery will take and hold a charge. Guarantee would be the standard 30/30. That's 30 feet or 30 seconds, which ever happens first. :>;)

Figure 12 pounds from 04605 for shipping, I can ship FedEx, UPS or USPS as you prefer.

Jack
