"Holy crap...how do you guys keep the front wheel down"

I drained the oil out of my forks and filled them with lead shot. My bars are filled with depleted uranium.

Congratulations on the break-in.

I just got my Uly past the break in period too! : )

Any SANE suggestions for learning how to get the most out of this bike? I've been putting around on a Heritage for a while and don't have the skills you guys seem to possess....I also don't have the desire to spend time in the hospital or service shop...but I would like to "play around" more with my Buell.

Thanks!!

Scott, sane suggestions? Let's see, sit on air box when using the throttle hard, sit on tail piece when using the front brake hard, never, ever play around at slow speed in parking lots, and change your color to ORANGE. Just trying to help.

Fllbikerwolf, I can recommend the book " a twist of the wrist II" by Keith Code.
The book will help you learn the basics of sport riding, and has exercises you can do on the bike to help reinforce the information.

Get yourself to a track day. There are many programs out there nowadays. Talk to friends, and find out where to go, and what service to use.
The track day will let you explore the boundries of the bike, without having to worry about cops, traffic, deer, gravel, etc.

Ok Scott, there are a lot of good riding technique books out there. Read a few and then go for a ride and work on your techniques. Remember you are riding on the street and not the race track. There is a hugh difference. Work your way up at your speed and DO NOT RIDE OVER YOUR HEAD. Push your skill level up a little at a time. Use every minute riding learning something, no matter how small. Trust the bike and watch out for others. Oh yea, good luck and have fun!

Lorazepam, I'll grab a copy of the book right away, thanks!

I was a Firefighter/Medic for several years, so I've seen the results of aggressive sport riding gone bad! I'd like to be able to throw my Buell around a little more though. Maybe some real basic tricks?

Dragon Slayer, I liked the don't ride over your head comment. Thats when we seem to get into trouble the most!

Both of you mentioned riding on a track, I'll look into that down in the Fort Lauderdale area. I'm assuming they have times for "new sportbikers"???

Knowing the road is as important to a new sport rider as it is to have the feel for the bike you are riding. Too many times we see city kids coming up to the twisties in the hills and getting hurt because they blew a curve. They had the bike down pretty good but were unfamiliar with the road. That's a bad combination.

I've been riding nearly 30 years and made my share of mistakes. Luckilly I have survived thus far. I'm an agressive rider but I don't take chances and I always do a pre-ride of the road before I do the deed to check conditions.

The Uly is a great bike to learn on but remember that not all bikes feel the same so take it easy and have fun.

The track is a much safer place to go hot-dogging for sure though!

I was in Georgia for the Spring and Summer and had a chance to enjoy the riding in the North Georgia Mountains. AWESOME!

Every trip up there I came up on an Ambulance, a dejected rider usually sitting on the edge of the pavement and a ton of little plastic pieces all over the roadway!

I asked the question in order to avoid some of those same mistakes with my Uly AND secondarily to have some fun with it too : )

I like to ride rolling on and off the throttle, letting the engine do the braking. It isnt the fastest way, but fun and comfortable.
