This afternoon, I upgraded the headlight bulbs for a pair of Philips Vision Plus H7s. There didn't seem to be enough room behind the headlight assembly to get the bulbs out with the unit in place, so I removed.

Seems between the two main bulb housings is a smaller sidelight bulb connector - similar to the one found in the tail light.

Curious as I am, I pulled the socket out and noticed there was no bulb in it. I checked the light assembly, and there didn't seem to be any trace of a bulb floating around.

I happened to have a spare so I put it in - seems to be working.

So what do you think - the factory just forgot to install it?

If you want to check for yourself, you can see the bulb (if it's there) by turning the headlights on and taking a peak up close, from the front, between the two main reflectors.

I'd be curious to know if others have the sidelight bulb or not...

I noticed the same thing. I also noticed that there is no mention of it in the Service Manual.

There is a previous post on this somewhere.

I'm pretty sure the bulb is not installed on the U.S. spec bikes (mine had no bulb). I believe the bulb is there to satisfy some European regulation.

Euro spec - that makes sense.

Thanks

Euro-spec sure, but you can install a 194 bulb if you want. It will be on whenever the headlights are on and when you have the key in the "park" position (along with the taillight). It gives kind of a neat soft yellow glow to the high beam bucket when you are using the low bam.

I believe it's called a position marker. My SV has one as well (it actually works, though).

Here in Europe they are called "city" or "park" lights and they are required by law. I will add the bulb when my bike arrives in 1 month since I'll be staying here in Europe for a few more years.

Euro park light and they work nice. I used to leave them on when I was parked in front of a resutaruant or something at dusk or at night.

They help folks making a quick swing into what appears to be one of the 2 open parking spots in Manhattan at any time.

And. . . the draw the notice of folks who think you left your lights on and start the standard "what the heck is a Buell? dialouge. I always carry spare literature and goodies.

Put the light in. . . I think it's 7w.

If anyone needs any of these bulbs let me know. I'll throw one in 1st class mail and send it.

I get my bulbs from www.powerbulbs.co.uk and with each order they give you two of these for free. I've never used them.

I've got 4 extras.

Steven:

Thanks for the offer. What are the numbers on the bulbs. We keep a lot of bulbs in stock for the instrument clusters on the race cars for the night races?

Thanks

They are listed on this packaging as 5W5, but as Paul mentioned I think in the US they go as 194.

I just slapped one in. I like it. Now I can tell from the front of the bike if I accidentally left the ignition switch in 'Park'.

I always have.

http://www.powerbulbs.co.uk/default.asp?offer.asp

Even if you don't get them for free, I've still got three, and I think they are pretty cheap at the autoparts store too!

I've never tried the powerbulb brand. I figured if I'm paying international postage and whatnot I'll just go for either OSRAM or Phillips.

If you've not seen this page, you might find it interesting. Provides some info on the differences between the euro-spec bulbs and the ones we get here.
