In 2000, I bought this...http://txsupermoto.smugmug.com/photos/55428164-M.jpg

It is a 2000 KTM LC4 Supermoto. Very few were brought into the U.S. They were'nt even listed in any of their brochures. Some select dealers were given the chance to sell them to see if they would sell here. They did'nt for a few years, then Supermoto took off with the AMA having a race series, and the popularity began to rise, and now there are many different sizes and manufactures making them.

It is a good bike, but a little harsh. It vibrates a lot, and is not good for highway driving. All the good places to ride are a pretty good distance away, and the big single is not comfortable for the trip there.(my opinion)

It is fun to rip around town, and dirt roads on, and it will get you into trouble quickly, but it is not the bike for me if I have to only one bike. So the the bike sits in the garage most of the time.

Enter late summer 2005, and Buell intros the Ulysses, and I see the bike that I wanted back in 2000.

So in October 2005, I bought this...http://txsupermoto.smugmug.com/photos/55424087-M.jpg

This is what I was looking for!

I think that the Uly is closer to a supermoto than an adventure bike. I think I will call it a SuperSportMoto. It rips on dirt roads, open trails(wide), and is comfortable on the road, yet handles like a sport bike.

So now I have both...http://txsupermoto.smugmug.com/photos/55422362-M.jpg

I met a rider in Deal's Gap last Oct that had a Ulysses and KTM as well. He liked 'em both!

Right on!

I started with this bike, which I thought was a good handling canyon bike...

But it sucked on the freeway, and not real comfy, so I got me this;

And that I liked so much, I got a spare!

I have a KLR650 that complements the Uly nicely. I built a smaller 18" front wheel for it to give the SM look and handling.

The two bikes share a lot of similarities regarding ergos. I use the KLR mainly for commuting in LA traffic - it's like riding a mountain bike through a car park - and the Uly for my weekend adventures.

The one big thing I like about have the two similar styled bikes, is that each makes you appreciate the other.

Cheers
-Jack

Wasions, I think everyone should have a dirt bike. If you've got one that you like and it runs, by all means keep it.

You can't have too many bikes, eh?

When I went to add the Tiger to my Progressive policy, I learned it was actually $17 cheaper to insure both bikes, than to insure the Tiger alone!

I'm keeping my Suzuki!

Kreature,
18x2.5 Excel front rim, laced to a KLR250 front hub, running a Duro HF904 Median 120/80/18 tire.
Decided on an 18" front because more DS tyre options

The Duro's are a decent DS tyre that work well both on and of road. They run around $90 for a pair, shipped. I have 6k miles on them and they're still going strong.

Hey ya Gene: The Uly is doing great and I'm getting ready to mount a Pirelli Scorpion Sync on the rear @ 5000 miles. That was one nice weekend to ride up there! You ARE seriously in the heart of terrific riding. Will you be at TWO for the Buell demo fleet?

Hey, you guys are just like me! I thought I was alone out here. Though you guys are smarter than I am. You actually went out and BOUGHT 2 bikes. Something I have been debating on. I have several bikes right now but I'm re-thinking my choices.
Jack, Love what you did with the KLR. Great idea. I have been contemplating a KLR for a long time. I'm such a procrastinator.
Keep on Bikin. And thanks for the pics too. Cactus Jack

P.S.- Yeah Steve, keep the DR350. It not only adds to your enjoyment but helps keep you in top riding form too. Plus it looks good in the garage. Cactus Jack

Yeah, the DR is staying in the garage. I'll have to consider a 17" for the front.

I have a Uly because I rode to Ontario last summer on my M2 and as nice a bike as it was the 7500km trip was just a bit too much on that bike. 2 minutes on the Uly and I knew I was getting one.
