Last week I idled the bike down about 200 rpms so that when it is warmed up it idles at 950-1000 rpms according to the tach reading. I might try a hair lower. Anyways, it rides better in my estimation. No problems with starting or idling at this lower rpm. Easier on the take off in 1st gear.

Somebody posted somewhere about possible problems with lowering the idle speed. Or maybe I imagined it.

Idle speed should be 1050-1150 Basically the tach needle should just be about the 1K line.

I believe the oil pressure begins to drop off dramatically at engine RPMs below 1K. Not a serious problem at all but can cause premature engine wear due to less oil spray on the bottoms of the pistons and little or no airflow for cooling if you plan on ideling a long time. It's mainly heat related failure because the oil has as much to do with cooling the internals as the air does to cool the external parts.

Shouldn't the oil pressure light go on if the oil pressure drops too low? My idle is pretty much right on 1000 rpms so I'm not worried but I appreciate the information.

Not necessarily. Yes you would think it should come on but I think it has to drop to near zero before it will come on. I don't know the specs on the idiot-light switch so I'm just generalizing the worst case scenario. I do know that my BT will drop to near zero when ideling at 900 on a hot day though. It has a pressure gauge so I have seen it. The Buell motor will start pinging when it gets too warm and I have seen that happen on my S3T Tuber. Very similar motor but much different cooling. No fan or scoops, no oil cooler either.

I haven't put enough summer miles on the Uly to really see how it does but I'll bet it's better than my 01 Tuber!

I'm currently thinking about force-feeding the 01 fire breathing tube monster and doing drags with it. I need to get my thrills off the public streets before I become a part of them......
