Once I got my bags on yesterday for the first time, I was surprised by how wide they are. Measure about 40" side to side. This could be a problem with splitting lanes. Has anyone tried it yet?? Does anyone know if there are City Bag lids available ?? |

I did a lot of lane splitting while out in CA on my trip this fall. I didn't have any problems. |

I gather that all of H&B's bags will fit onto the Buell racks. Perhaps their Junior cases? http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/632/335/ Or the Strykers? http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/2285/335/ Cheers Brett |

Thanks for the links. Hepco does not make other lids for our cases. Would have to buy another full set at $450. Might do that someday if these get in the way. |

Sadly, we can't lane split in Tennessee, but if we could, I'd opt for using a top case only or a seat bag. Seems like it would make things easier. |

Here is another solution. A set of Dirt Bagz. The Hepco brackets will hold them where they go, so might be a solution when the full 40liter set are not needed. http://moto-sportpanniers.com/dirtbagz/ |

Commuting during crunch time, I only travel with the tail bag. I use the side bags for weekend travel only, if I encounter traffic I try to avoid lane splitting because as you mentioned, she is wide across the rear!! |

If the width difference between the bike with bags and the bike without bags is an issue maybe you shouldn't be lane sharing after all. The bars must be what 38" side to side. 2 more inches for the bags and you are worrying. I can't see it but we aren't allowed to lane share yet but they are talking about it like it's inevitable. |

Actually the bike is 36" w/o the bags and 40" with. That 4 inches can make a big difference. With the bags behind you, its hard to judge when they might scrape someones mirrors brackets or mirrors. I believe lane splitting is a safer way of traveling when traffic is at a stand still or a crawl. I limit my splitting to times when traffic is moving at 25 mph or less. Most people will pull over to the far side of their lane to give you room. Its the trucks and SUv's that have to be watched. |

I also do a bunch of road bicycling and the cars have been sharing my lane from day one. Oh, yes, but we bicyclist are supposed to obey all the traffic laws. |

I once lane split for hours on a friends RT1150. It's only about 2" narrower than a Uly (both bikes with hard bags). Not a big deal as long as you select your gaps wisely. OTOH I've ridden with some hard core lane-splitters who will split in places I won't. YMMV of course, but I think a Uly bagger is fine for lane splitting. Like any other riding activity, exercise sound judgement and due caution and things will be peachy. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara |

I'm not able to fit my big arse Uly between anything! I just fitted the bags, a bit of a lever helped get the bolts behind the footpegs in, mainly because the plastic mudguard thing stops the back bolt from getting into a flush position! Also check out the pic of my registration plate light surround, just fell to bits, pulled the screws straight thru, very brittle!
