Go windward My impressions vs my Ultra. My ultra is stage 2 95 cubic inches Super trapp pipes race tuned. Not your normal geezer glide. It also has besides the standard CB CD weather radio, XM 276 C Garmin which of course I will also use on the Uly and heated grips and a lot of non functional look good stuff. My Uly other than changing the windscreen putting on the bags and maybe a different seat if one comes out that I like, I plan on doing nothing else. I've said that before on bikes however  My Ultra is like a big mercedes sedan with a hopped up engine. great for what it is. I had no problem doing the IBA Saddlesore or Bun burner on the bike. The Uly to me is like an all wheel drive sports car. Not as sporty as a true sports car but able to go where a true sports car couldn't. that would be my analogy. I like them both a lot. Just for different reasons. Can a man have two mistresses? |

Since I got the Uly I've only ridden the electraglide once and it felt weird after getting used to the new bike. My glide is easier to maneuver in the parking lot but the ULY is so much more the hot rod on the street. Winter weather in NE sucks but I've been riding as much as I can so long as it gets around 40 or higher. The one thing the electraglide beats the ULY (for now at least)hands down in is wind protection. I'm waiting for Buell to come out with a windshield unless DAVES and others give the Cee Bailey a real world thumbs up. |

Lowflyer two mistresses as long as one is black huh? I have a black F 150 my wife has a black Lincoln, I have a black Ultra, a black trailer to tow behind it, (OK a flamed softail) and now a black uly. I definitely qualify on that count. Now the bad news. While riding in downtown Parkville MO where FF and 9 meet while I was going east bound on FF rolling up to the stop sign at 9, a Buick Lesabre stoped at his stop sign and then inexplicably started up just as I (who had the right of way and no stop sign) was ready to enter it. Full on emergency both brakes locked stop, he missed me by a foot or so. If I hadn't seen him I would have been broadsided by a Lesabre. Ouch. Using my best MSF SIPDE training I saw him stop, but kept watching and saw him start up. Thank God! Unfortunately after coming down from a small stoppie, my foot came down in sand, foot slipped, bike and me fell. Good news. I'm only sore. The uly rear was fine as I was able to break it's fall with my leg. That's a joke. My leg was caught under the bike. Luckily nobody was right behind me. A guy stops and pulls the bike off of me, the guy in the LeSabre helps and we get the bike upright. Scratched right handguard, frame puck, broken lense but still functioning turn signal, the only apparent damage. The bike was still running and I shut it off. Good news he was insured, knows it was his fault admitted it and told it that way to his insurance company. All easy fixed will have it inspected next week at the dealer to make sure. Question for anyone who knows. (Does running for a short time laying on its side hurt this engine? Do Buells not have a sensor that shuts the engine off if it falls over like Harleys do or do they work differently because of the lean angle difference? Answers anyone. I was wearing Darien Light Pants, Harley leather FXRG jacket, heavy gloves and a Harley (HJC) flip up. Glad for all of those. Interesting side note the left handguard popped off the end of the bar even though it wasn't touched. All in all it could have been a lot worse. |

Bob - Glad you're ok. It really could have been a lot worse. I know the Blast has a lean angle sensor, so at least some Buells do. I don't know if I'd find it more supprising that the Uly didn't or that yours was broken. |

It's good to hear you were unhurt. Welcome to the "I Dumped My Uly Club." I am one of the founding members. Membership is compulsory, with indefinite waivers for the extremely lucky and non-riding posers.
My first drop was while sitting at a stop sign about 2 weeks after I got it when I almost got creamed by a head-on garbage truck that was cutting the corner. No damage. This is one helluva tough bike. |

No, it kept running until I shut it off. I was pretty quick about shutting it off out of the same concern that Bob has. I just don't know if running on its side causes damage. I suspect not since there is no dump switch. I think a bike as well-suited for dumping as this one apparently is would have incorporated a dump switch. It's hard to believe Buell would overlooked that if it were a legitimate concern. |

I wouldn't be too sure about that. They also gave us fenders that do little good and that key ignition switch placement just sucks. As with all first year bikes there is room for improvement. |

I think the issues you mention are personal preference more than they are design flaws. I have no problem with the ignition key where it is. It makes my starting and stopping routine more methodical. I'll almost never be able to ride off anywhere in a fury because of having to stop and find the damn keyhole. That might save my silly neck someday. I know it will save some drunks. The fenders have not been a problem for me either. |

Bob, Glad you are okay!
The rest of the Xb line does have a "bank angle" sensor that will shut off power to the fuel pump and ignition. Service manual does not say what the angle limit is though. |

Better yet; who's got a Uly wiring diagram? A sensor would be easy to spot, I'd think. |

I think the sensor not only has to detect the bike being laid over but also a certain deceleration also to trip the sensor. These some what "gentle" tip overs do not have a high enough deceleration to make the sensor work. |

Okay, I guess I'm the goof because my Uly as been laid down twice. The first one was in the yard trying to position the bike for a picture, the second was my Ice Skating event. Both times the bike shut off. I really did not notice it until the second time when I was picking the bike up and as I almost had it straight up, the fan came on. Even the fan was shut off while laid over. I was glad it had that safety feature.
Bob, I'm wandering if you were holding the bike up enough that it did not activate the safety switch. I'm glad you are okay. |

The handlebars were on the ground and the turn signal and the puck, the back of the bike was on my foot. I heard the rpms run up and shut the bike off while lying on the ground. That would be a pretty severe lean angle! |

Bob, that's farther over than my Uly when I hit the Ice last month. With the bags on, the frame puck never touched the ground. I would ask the dealership to check it. |

Update Two weeks of riding and I got to my 1000 mile service. All of my parts are in so I will get a freshly serviced no longer bunged up Uly! Yeah! I did change the oil at 50 miles, didn't want to go 1000 with those little pieces of metal floating around. Second piece of news. I now have an orange uly and a black. Sort of. I bought the complete orange parts from a guy on Badweb from Texas. Thanks! So now if the mood strikes me that orange is the color of the day I can change. I have ridden quite a bit of the miles with my riding buddy Rory, he riding his BMW 1150 GS Adventure. We have probably ridden a couple of hundred miles on dirt and gravel roads. I think his bike is better on this medium. No surprise it's more designed for it. It's heavier bigger tires etc. The uly's forte is of course the twisties and I am pretty sure in acceleration. He is seriously considering selling the Beemer to get the Ulysses. Haven't put the bags on yet, waiting for the repairs to be made. I will also mount my Garmin 276 C over the weekend and report on that. I hardly ever ride my Ultra, it's like riding a tractor after riding the Uly. I plan on doing some more Iron Butt stuff this summer, the Ultra probably gets the nod there. I do think I am going to make the front a little stiffer. It seems to dive more than I am comfortable with, but they just be the fact that I am not used to a sportbike and the travel of the Uly. I love the bike and I'm glad I got a black and er, an orange one. |

If you haven't adjusted the suspension since Gail's set it up, it is likely that they set it up too light. Mine was nowhere near set up according to the OM. |

I am somewhat surprised they did that. They didn't mention a thing to me about it when I bought mine. I see GOOD progress at that dealership. |

They set my bike up for 225 lb rider which is about 13 lbs over my weight. No complaints about the set up but then again, I've never had a fully adjustable suspension. |
