I am quite interested in a Ulysses, but I read where heat from the rear cylinder is a problem. The article also said the fan is quite noisy. Is any of these issues a real problem or was the magazine making this out to be more of a problem than it really is?}

The rear cylinder problem is a non issue to me. It is warmer on the right than the left, but nothing that I notice or would consider a problem. Maybe in the summer in the desert, but haven't been there yet.

The fan is loud only when you turn the motor off. I do not notice it when the bike is running. I wear a full face helmet, which probably helps. It runs at top speed for 30 sec to a min, then switchs to a slower speed, before it turns off.

I don’t see it, my Hayabusa and My Duc have greater heat issues.

Quite a bit of heat gets dumped on your right leg in the summer and the fan is annoyingly loud. They are non-issues, given the big picture, IMO.

My ZX-10 put off considerabley more heat, I think.

Get a flight suit and pipe that warm air into the suit and helmet for a TOASTY WARM ride in winter!

The heat hasn't been an issue for me.

A quieter fan would be nice. The darn thing seems to run all the time, even when ambient temp is in the low 40's. It's only really noticeable when you park though.

I wouldn't let either impact my decision to buy the bike. Have you taken one out on a test ride?

You want to ride an FJR then you will know what heat is. The Uly has a small heat issue only when you are riding and the wind is 50 kph and it comes from the left side.

I had an FJR prior to buying the Uly. Much adoo was made about the FJR heat, but honestly, as long as you were moving you weren't hot. Now, sitting in traffic is a different story. Crotch pot cooking comes to mind! LOL!

I haven't had the Uly out in hot weather yet, so I can't comment on the heat, but the fan, well, let's just say it's blown WAY out of proportion. I like knowing that my AIR COOLED bike is actually getting air to the rear cylinder. If they could put a bigger, louder, fan back there that cooled even better, I'd be all for it. Gives me real peace of mind knowing I'm not going to damage my engine in slow going. Unlike the BMWs I've owned where I heard stories of engines getting so hot they melted the sight glass!

I just tell people, "loud fans save lives", unless I'm riding my Ducati that day, then I tell the "loud clutches save lives".

I got mine in November so I can't really comment on the heat issue too much. There is heat dumped onto the underside of your right thigh but by moving around on the large and comfy seat takes care of the worst of it. Once the fan kicks in the heat goes away.
The fan is loud but I don't think it's that bad. When you look at the big picture these are so minor that I feel like a whiner just talking about them.
Another way to look at it is that if these two issues are the biggest problems with the bike, then the rest of the bike must be spot on.

PS: I like the "loud fans save lives" line!

If you can hear the fan over the wind noise, you aren't going fast enough.

I think of the fan as an accessory, not as something to be ashamed of.

I make no excuses for my fan. I'm proud of it! : )

It's hot on your right leg when stopped at a light wearing shorts. I know, I know...don't ride with shorts on. I live in FL, shorts are a way of life. However, I always wear a helmet so fan noise is a non-issue. You may now flame away.

Uly Fan Club. What a great idea for a T shirt! Are any "Official Licensed Product" screeners listening?

What can I say. Anytime you sit on top of a running engine, you are going to get hot! I do not notice the heat from the fan, it goes out the back over the rear tire and out the rear sides. But I do feel the heat coming from the right front header pipes. The fan is most noticeable when parked after shutting off the engine. Next would be at stop lights and in slow traffic.

No, remember I live in FL. We wear black socks with sandals.

I do make a under seat heat barrier for the Uly. Works very well. I am working with another customer on an additional piece to deflect the heat on the right side in particular. Here's a pic or you can visit www.specialops-online.com

Ah...well...then it wasn't you. The guy I saw wasn't wearing socks. LOL! : )

When I went down to Ocala to get my bike, it was SO strange to see people riding without helmets. I wanted to test ride my bike before leaving the dealer, and the salesman looked at me funny when I put on my Teknic jacket, Held gloves, and Arai full face helmet. He said, "you don't have to wear helmets down here". I really wanted to ask him if they had softer roads to keep from splitting open your skull and giving you road rash, but I decided no to. : ) LOL!

Heat and noisy fan was an issue for me for about the first 1k miles, but it seemed to taper off. At 2k, I switched to synthetic oil and the fan all but quit coming on. Now it only comes on occasionally when I park. I think it is a non-issue.

I got to ride one at the Long Beach show on the 12th. I went out at about 11am. Not sure how many other trips the bike had been on before that. The ambient temp was around 65 degrees. I noticed that the "fuel tank" was noticeably warm. It pinged a few times during acceleration, too. Didn't stop me from putting a deposit on one later in the day.
Fan note- While waiting for the ride a previous group returned to the parking lot. I could hear the fans before the exhaust! Sounded like a bunch of turbine engines at flight idle! That didn't put me off, either.
