Eric Buell,
This transmission needs another gear, a lower one. I keep trying to down shift past 1st because there should be a lower one. I've read this from others and I fully agree. Maybe Buell can somehow modify the existing transmission so that we can buy a kit. Probably wishful thinking but I'd be the first in line to buy it.

Unfortunately, the re-designed engine cases no longer have a trap door to pull out the tranny if needed. It now requires "splitting the cases" to do any transmission work. Still want to buy a kit?

I think Eric probably toyed with changing the gear ratios but I imagine he decided to leave the bike slabable and backroadable rather than making it a hill climber and slower.

I think you guys would be happy with a lower first gear but the majority of riders would complain of it being too low. Also you would probably have several people on their buttocks after looping the thing on starting off....

I think he made the wise choice of staying within common parameters.

Now if only he would have stayed with common dual sport rear rim sizes I would have a better chance of finding something better than the short-lived dunlop...3800 miles and mine is toast...

Steve, biggest reason for me to have a 6th gear would be for an overdrive on the interstate or highways. I don't care about top speed, I just care about doing 80 at something lower than 4000 rpms.

I think the gears just take some getting used to. I have grown to like mine the way it is.

No problems with mine. 5 gears work for me. If 1st was any lower, it'd be worthless. Basically you'd just get the clutch released and you'd have to shift. 5th is very relaxed. In fact, I find that unless I'm doing 70 or better, I don't bother with 5th.

I vote for adding the gear on top also. Right now top speed is about only 135 butt off the line few can keep up with the Buell.

I'm voting for a lower first gear, dodging trees and ruts at 10 to 15 mph isn't fun, and you need to go that fast to get the motor to tick over smoothly!

It can be done, slip the clutch with a few revs to keep it smooth, but you can't do that for long if you want the bike to last!

Yeah I know it's designed for unmade roads, but hell, what happens when they run out! : )

Maybe it was decided that the motor would overheat if the bike was trudged around very long in a slower first gear. If that is the case then I'd rather the engine last with the gearing it has then grenade with a slower first.

My vote is a 6th gear overdrive like many others here I would like to see less rpms at higher speeds and top speed doesn't impress me I just want lower rpm.

The XB9 has a lower primary ratio. Fitting the parts would effectively lower all you gears, including first.

Cheers

My vote is for a wide ratio gearbox. I'd start with the 9's lower overall first gear ratio and end with a bit higher ratio on the top end assuming the engine will pull it to red line. I don't know if that is even possible given the required number of gear teeth, pitch center distances and space available in the cases.

I occasionally find myself trying to shift into "6th" on the highway and also wishing my 12 would wheelie as easy as my 9 did just off of idle.

I am pretty sure the gears are all the same. The only difference is the primary ratio between the 9 and 12. The 9 primary has a 34 tooth crank sprocket, the 12 has a 38 tooth sprocket. Getting a 9 primary gear assy and primary chain should get you in business.

If anything, i used to think that it needed another top end gear, but after taking it cross country and zipping through most the states at ~90 on the way back, I've changed my mind.

Solo - One of the Badwebbers put the 9 primary gears on a 12. Do a search and you might find it. He wasn't very happy with the results if I remember correctly.
