Chad: It's ~100 miles. I can usually make it in 2 hours if it's not rush-hour or holiday traffic (I'm in Chicago.) |

Humm...and I think it's between 6 and 7 hours up I-65 from Nashville to Chicago if I slabbed it.
An 8 or 9 hour trip by the slab. Not too bad. |

I'd love to go for sure, but the thought of riding all that slab is not enticing.
I'm not a slab sort of rider. I like naked bikes because the wind hitting you while your carving a tight back road is a visceral experience. But that same bike going down the slab with 18 wheelers whipping up monster buffeting just isn't my cup of tea.
If someone has any suggestions on how to get there and how to get back, preferably in one day each way, without doing massive amounts of boring slab riding, then I'm there!! |

Aw, just do what all them Harley guys do...throw it on a trailer and drive up to the ride. Is that inflammatory? |

As a Harley and as of January a Ulysses rider, I guess I sort of resent that remark. In the last 5 years I've ridden over 80,000 miles and been in all 48 lower states and 6 provinces. I've done the Saddlesore 1000 and Bun Burner 1500. There are certainly many posers out there, but I also see a lot of sportbike riders in KC whose biggest trip is to Starbucks and Latte Land. We're headed on a 6000+ mile trip to Alaska next summer. I'm not sure yet whether I will take the Ulysses or the Ultra. I may have to rig a backrest on the Uly to go that far. Anybody worked on that yet? My Uly ships on January 6th and I have never been so pumped for a new bike. So in answer to your question I guess I do consider it a little inflammatory. |

Sure, some Harley owners think nothing of throwing their rides on the trailer and heading to some destination. I've never trailered mine. My bikes have always been for fun, basic transportation, long haul trips, and whatever. I'll bet that there are more long haul Hogs on the road than any other bike. Just going down the Interstate I always notice that most bikes I see are Harleys. Not too many long haul sport bikes compared to the Harleys. Electraglides are comfortable bikes and they get decent mpg. I see the sport bike riders on the highway but to me they look like they can't wait until they get to point b. |

Also if you go to the Iron Butt website you will see that there have been more Harleys ridden to qualify than any other brand. Somebody must be riding them. |

There's an old Rush song that says, "The point of a journey is not to arrive", and that's sort of how I look at riding. I usually pick a direction more than a destination.
I've never done a SS1000 or anything like that because it focuses too much on the destination, not the ride.
I've trailered a few times, and it has it's benefits. I'd never say anyone is less of a rider because they choose to trailer their bike someplace. Yeah, there are posers. Some ride cruisers, some ride sportbikes. I can't count the number of sportbikes I've seen with completely bald rear tires, but only in the center. Chicken strips 2" wide on the sides. No wonder they trailer. They can't turn!  |

That would be the problem with posting on a bb...if no one can see your expression they can't tell what's tongue in cheek. I too have seen as many sport bikes trailored to beach as Harleys. Posers who just cruise up and down the strip. No offense was seriously intended. |

Well just got my ULY before Thanksgiving. Live in Montgomery, AL and plan on riding all year. But during the spring or summer I will take the ride to North-West Illinois to see my family on it. It is about 900 miles one way. So, will do the 13 hour trip in one day. Will be fun. On the Nashville to Chicago you can make it in about 7 hours doing 80 - 85 on I-65. Did it a lot last year and this year. But in a truck will do it on the Uly next year. Family is in North-west tip of Illinois so will take the trip thru central Illinois to get there. Love riding the Uly even when it is 35 deg. But truck it when colder. |

Buelltoys if you're going that far anyway you ought to think about doing an Iron Butt Qualifier. It takes a little work, but not too bad. Not too many have been done on Buells yet. |

Not sure what the Iron Butt is. I just started riding bikes in April. My first was a Blast. Loved riding it so got the big one now. And I love it!!! |

I did a 1000 miler with the wife on the back of an 89' Yamaha Venture Royale and it took 23 hours and that was even stopping at the Little Big Horn for an hour. Yellowstone to Omaha. Don't recommend doing that at all. The Yamaha had a strong engine but if it was raining the bike would run on only 2 of the 4 cylinders. Never have had that problem with my Electraglide. All my previous Jap bikes had that problem especially after blasting them at the car wash. Not the Harley. Has anybody had that problem with a Buell?? |

Buelltoys: I'm in Birmingham. My first trip after having my Uly about a week was from here to St Louis, up to Chicago and back. The Uly works very very well. Still Ecstatic with My Buell Ulysses XB12X
