So yet another one is down. Dropped mine doing about 50km/h. I was making a left turn no traffic so I didn't really slow down ( this is a wide turn off a hi-way btw) and I must of hit some gravel. I went sliding with the bike almost 40 feet. Got the bike up only damage was to the frame puck, hand guard and lens on the front turn signal. Also the peg got ground down a little but not biggy. It should only coats around 100$ to replace the frame puck hand guard and lens. as for my gear only 2 small holes! oh well!

Sorry to hear about your get off, but glad to hear the Uly is proving to be reasonably crash-worthy!

I had the opportunity to test mine on a dirty and technical back road a couple weeks ago and was impressed with how well the tires hooked on pavement that had dirt, sand and gravel in spots due to recent rains.

The guys I was riding with had much more trouble with the dirt/gravel on the pavement than the Ulysses did.

dood it's not every uly just mine lol... no i dunno a lot of construction has been going on in my area that with the sun in my eyes just a simple mistake.... however I didn't crash when i was riding with a cbr1000rr the past weekend

Why take the "wind guards" off um I think they do a great job keeping your hands warm!

Homer,

I would highly recommend keeping the hand guards. The hand guards have saved my Uly from having any significant damage on three occasions. The guards themselves now have some minor battle scars, but like frame pucks, they are cheap to replace.

I don't particularly like the styling of the wind guards and my finger are so long that my finger tips hang out below them in the wind and still get cold so it doesn't do me much good.

The brush guards can protect your levers in a fall.

If you've ever had to ride home with half a clutch or half a brake lever you know their value.

While some may view it as a styling ploy I note that no one has complained that their levers broke when the bike went down. To me that means the brush guards are doing their job so far.

If you never plan to ride off-road and you can flat foot the Uly then I can see why you might pull them off. Of course if you ever do drop the bike and your levers break you'll wish you had left them on.

Well given the way the state maintains the dirt/gravel road I live on I think every time I leave the driveway I am going off-road

To be honest I never realized the hand guards were there to protect the levers, I always thought is was for folks riding where the branches would whack your hands or something...

Hello Homer,

In 18 months I've dropped my DRZ400S a few times. After the first get-off yielded a busted brake lever I "saw the light". Some of my buddies carry spare levers...

The brush guards do triple duty: 1) They protect your controls from breakage - I also keep my controls on the DRZ semi-tight so they can be rotated by hand as an additional method of protection, 2) They protect your hands and controls from brush, 3) They provide some wind protection for your hands on a cool day.

I thought they were just for hand protection and looks myself. That is, until the first drop when it went from upright to gravel-covered pavement in a blink. The only damage to the bike was a tiny scratch on the hand guard.

Here is a question about the hand guards. I wanted to remove mine to get better access to the lever and cable. No way it seems!!! The Phillips head bolt that holds the guards on was locked solid both top and bottom screw. Must be loctite on it or something.

I was thinking of what I could do to get the bolt out without damaging the bolt head or the guards but could not come up with much. Tried PB Blaster but no help. Heat would melt the plastic. Thought of freezing them to get the screw out but did not try it.

Anyone else have this problem and find a method?

Mine broke when attempting to remove them -- kaboodles of loctite on them too (and I'm not complaining!)

I ordered all the associated hardware, less the actual guards and bar plugs, for about $25.00 from Dave @ Appleton. So, I'd guess Andy could hook you up now.
