I love this bike but there is one thing that my old '94 Road King did better. The RK was smoother in first gear. The bike lunges and I have to play with the clutch to control it. It's not a big deal. I notice it most when pulling out of a driveway, stuck in traffic or when traveling over some of the narrow bridges in my area. I've been attributing this to the idler pulley keeping tension on the belt for that instantaneous throttle response...which I like in every other gear. I know some of you ride in some densely populated areas (Court, Henrik, etc.) and was wondering if this sounded unusual to you. I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks

Steve

Sportsters and Buells don't have a Compensator sprocket like your RK does. The Compensators job is to smooth out power pulses and low engine speeds. Its most effective in lower gears.

I got stuck in heavy traffic, going uphill, on one of my first outings with the Uly. I'm glad the clutch is easier to operate than previous versions, but my left hand and wrist were toast by the time I got to the top of the hill. I've never had to work so hard to maneuver a bike at slow speeds.

hmmm.... never had to work so hard...?

I think I remember how you feel, when I first got my 04 xb12r I thought the clutch was awful heavy. I just attributed it to the fact it's a Harley motor. By the time I finished the break in, I didn't notice it any more.

However, when I got my Ducati 749S a few months later, that clutch felt like a feather.

I think it's been said before that the Uly could use a lower first gear.

Anyone install the primary drive from the XB9? It will lower final drive considerably.

It's just a Sportster engine characteristic. It's there to remind Buell owners in denial that yes, the Buell IS based on a Harley. A lower first gear would only help at very low speeds and this lurching can easily happen in the first three gears. This condition does not happen all the time. I think it is brought on by the rider getting on then off the throttle at low engine RPMs. I know that when I get it right, that I can just let the clutch out and have the bike putt down the road at an idle. This is when everything is right in the world, and if it is not, WHO CARES!
