Chad-

Did you ride the Uly on the track? How was it? With the height of the Uly, can you still get a knee down?

I've never been to Barber, but almost made a trip last fall. Is it a very wide track?

Don't pick my Uly up until this coming Saturday. I took my Ducati Monster to the track. Got both knees down. : )

Here's me rounding turn 5 at Barber.

Chad,

That's an awesome picture. I look forward to a similar pic with your new Uly.

As tall as ya are Chad, I think you could have both knees down on that Duc just sitting upright!

That what my riding buddy said to me. He failed to get a knee down riding his ZX-6r and said it's because his legs weren't as long as mine.

I think he has sour grapes! : )

I don't know if the Uly will see many track days. My Duc has desmo valves, races carbs, and no rev limiter. So if the need arises, and I have to hold a shift point a bit longer, or if I downshift and over rev a bit...no harm done. That's what Ducatis are made for. : )

Coming soon eh!

Local shop had three, maybe 4 of em on the floor last I looked.

I pick my sled up from the shop Friday. Winter = Winter toy. ; )

I'm curious what sort of deal was had by waiting. You say MSRP vs the deal is a make or break thing, that's more than a couple hundred bucks, no? MSF gig? or?

You can ride it as aggressively as anything out there. The chicken strips on my Uly are smaller than the ones on my ZX-10 were and I have never even felt like I was close to dragging anything. Astonishingly fast cornering speeds without hanging off or any of the squid histrionics.

My Uly is HERE!!!!!

Got my Uly home yesterday. I broke it in the Motoman way. Lots of roll on and roll offs. Changed the engine oil, tranny oil, and filter at 50 miles. Stayed with dino oil for now until she reaches 3000 miles. I used my software and cable to reset the TPS (which wasn't off my much, but it was a slight bit) and set the idle accurately. I installed a powerlet outlet for my heated vest and battery tender (I prefer the "BMW style" outlets to the ones the Uly comes with). I set the suspension to factory reccomended settings. Sag feels right, but rebound in the front seems to be a bit high. I'll see when I actually get to ride it. It's pouring rain here today and that's not kosher with new tires. I'm working on installing the grip heaters. The damn bike is SUBSTANTIAL. Even the dash and real cowl area are metal. Every screw is loctited in and every drain plug had thread sealer (in lieu of a crush washer).

I rode home last night and felt nothing funny handling wise, even though the suspension wasn't set up yet. The one nit pick that I've read that I can confirm is that there is heat that comes off the right side of the bike. It was in the mid 50's when I was breaking it in last night, and I felt the heat. The steering lock isn't an issue unless you are trying to turn around in a tight spot. On the road you don't notice it. Much adoo about nothing if you ask me. Of course, I don't have an issue with reaching the ground (see below).

http://www.cycleforums.com/forums/attachment.php?s=&postid=2947899

That picture doesn't show that my legs are bent and sticking out forward a bit. I LOVE the room on this bike!! My beat up knees are going to be so thankful for this bike.

Chad,

I have noticed significant reduction in the heat on my right leg after my last oil change. I switched to Mobile 1 at the 2k oil change. The fan harldly runs at all now.

I've been motomanning my bike and changed the oil and filter out at 71 miles. I went to sprawlmart and got their brand 15w40 which has all the diesel ratings which the Buell owners manual says it's OK to use. Mobil 1 15w50 will be in this bike as soon as I hit 1500 miles. I have a 97 Electraglide and the idle on my new ULY is less vibration then the big twin by quite a bit. Sure it vibrates, but I expected way way more and have been pleasantly surprised. This bike really grows on you. It wants to go over the speed limit constantly and I'll have to learn to keep this in check or risk getting tickets. I'm either going to get the Nolan n102 flip up or the Caberg Justissimo flip up with the built-in shades. Where the heck can I get that Justissimo anyway?? I won't order from England.

I'm with Lowflyer, I changed mine to synthetic @1k and now the fan hardly ever comes on (except when I park it) and there is significantly less felt heat. I imagine that this is due to both the break-in and the change to synthetics.

Elec,

I got my Caberg at the HD dealer, but I have seen them online. You might check your nearest BMW dealer as well. This looks like a good deal. I paid $299 plus tax for mine. This one shows free shipping:

Hey Chad - congrats on getting the new bike finally! I know you must be enjoying it. I changed to synthetic too and the fan does seem to run less now. Maybe this is just a break-in thing or maybe I am just getting used to it now.

Does the powerlet outlet install in the cigar plug locations of the oem outlets or did you put them somewhere else?

What heated grips did you go with? That will be something I will want to do soon. I was thinking of just getting some warm wraps from aerostich in the mean time.

I installed the powerlet outlet seperate from the factory ones. I put it on the underside of the bike just aft of the helmet lock.

I used the heated grip kit from CA SportTouring (the same kit sold by Dual Star with a different switch). It works GREAT! Wanted to mount the switch on the left switch pod, but there wasn't enough clearance for the switch. I ended up drilling out the dash and installing it there. Looks stock. Very nice. I chose to install the grips using a relay and tapped the switched power off of the front accessory outlet.

As for the heat, I figure it will be much less once the bike gets fully broken in. I changed oil at 50 miles and right now I have 88 on the bike. The fan still runs constantly, even in the cool 50 degree weather I was riding in. I didn't notice the heat from the engine as much tonight because I had my roadcrafter suit on.

I typically hold off on moving to synthetic until 3000 miles.

I have the same grip kit on my V-Strom. It worked great for about three months and then stopped working. I need to find out if it is the switch or the connection at the element.

I know nothing about electrical. When you say you used a relay off of the accessory outlet, does the outlet still work as normal. Is the power for the grips coming from the battery direct or the connection at the relay? Maybe you could describe this better so I don't screw it up when I do mine.

When you took the grips off to put the elements on, did you use the stock grips again or are they glued on to the throttle tube?

Thanks for the help.

I have been tinkering with electronics long enough to have made a few mistakes that I now avoid. First rule of thumb, ALWAYS use a fused wire from the power source and place the fuse as close to the source as you can get. Second rule of thumb is that you always use a relay with high current devices (such as grip heaters) so you don't overload the stock wiring.

I have a wire running from the battery + terminal to the relays 12v in post. Then I have a wire coming from the accessory outlet to the relay "switched" 12v input. The outlet still works as I didn't cut the wire. I simply shaved off a bit of insulation and soldered a wire on to it, then electric taped the wires. I have the ground from the grip heaters as well as a ground wire from the battery - terminal soldered to the relays ground post. I have the 12v input wire for the grip heaters soldered to the relays 12v output post. That wire runs to the switch for the heaters, then the high and low elements of the grips are connected to the proper switch posts. The key to keeping everything together is solder EVERYTHING and wrap it securely with electric tape. Use a good hot soldering iron that will allow the solder to penetrate the wires.

I'm finding that the Uly is VERY overbuilt. The throttle grip came off pretty easy. I always cut the grips off and replace them with thick touring grips that are more comfortable for my big paws. The clutch side was hideous to get off. It was glued all the way around. I had to literally shave the grip off with a razor blade then use sand paper to sand off any remaining grip chunks and glue. It took me 45 minutes to get it all off. I think there are still tiny pieced of Buell grip on my garage floor. : ) I wrapped the bar on the clutch side with one layer of duct tape to insulate the bar from the grip a bit. Helps reflect some of the heat out instead of heating the bar.

I went out for a ride last night, and the grips get nice and toasty. Even on the low setting they get plenty hot. The high setting will toast bread! : )

Chad - thanks for the detailed info on the wiring.
I am still a little confused but I will spend some more time on this before I jump into it.

Can I get this relay from Radioshack? Is there a rating I should look for or are they basically all the same?

Can I get the power and ground from the power outlet up front instead of running new wires from the battery or would this overload the system?

Thanks for the help.

Here's a link to the relay:

You could get power from the outlet wires, but like I said, I'm anal about electrical stuff. I ran wires from the battery. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

Thanks for the link to the relay.
If I go with the power and ground from the accessory outlet, will I still use the relay, or do I just splice into the wires from the outlet?

Sorry for all the questions, like I said, I don't know much about electrical.

Well, if you are simply going to tap off the outlet wires, you really don't need the relay as you'll be pulling current from the outlet wires. As long as you don't have any high current device plugged into the outlet, then you'll be set. It's already fused too. Like I said...I'm just anal when it comes to electrical stuff. Tapping the outlet wires would be just fine I suspect.

My way isn't necessarily the best way. In fact, it's a BIT*H to run the wire from the battery to the dash without removing the airbox and airbox plate (which I didn't do thanks to the copious amounts of loctite Buell uses). I'm hoping my wire isn't resting against any hot engine parts. I ran it on the left side so I wouldn't have the possibility of touching the exhaust. The main harness is run there, and I tried to keep my wire right along side the main harness.

Lowflyer, I did a Froogle on Caberg Justissimo and it's $283.88 at this site http://www.motorcyclestyle.com/-motorcyclehelmets

And it's free shipping. Try Froogle, it rank orders by price.
Does Caberg fit size to size with most other helmets like Shoei, Nolan, and HJC? I need an XLarge in those brands. Caberg doesn't fit larger or tighter does it?

That sounds like a great deal! I haven't measured my head to see if this chart is accurate, but I have an XXL (a.k.a. Sputnik-size) that fits me with just a little extra room. I wear an XL in most other brands. Germans must have tiny heads. It fits snug when I wear a silk balaclava. I think they would have an interest in making certain that a helmet fitted with these measurements would work in 99% of cases. This is from the auction site:

MD-22 3/4- 23

LG-23 1/8- 23 1/2

XL-24- 24 3/8

XXL-24 3/4- 25 1/8

To measure your correct helmet size, using a cloth tape measure, measure the circumference of the head, like a headband, one inch above the eyebrows, above the ears. Match inch measurement to the chart. If between sizes, choose the next larger size. Helmet should fit snugly but not overly tight.

Okay, my wife measured my melon at 24 3/8. An XL felt too snug when I tried it on. I have been very happy with the XXL fit. Based on that, I would use the scale in my last post and then when you get an actual measurement, go a size up if you are on the upper end of the scale for a particular size. That is, unless you like a really snug fit.
