Ah Ponytail, with your riding style do I detect a future Uly rider? Your girlfriend will like the seating accommodations more than your current model. Lets see, the Uly for the couple and the XB12R for the "Wild Child".

Bindy, what thread and posting are you talking about? I would like to read it! It seems that some people on this forum are starting to take themselves and their views too seriously. Hey if I really need this crap I can just go down to the local bar and have someone spill it on me. At least I would get a few good drinks before walking away!

Hiya Dragon, it's okay was not that bad, just took me by surprise when I read the guy's comments on my new thread Eye of the Storm.. Cyclone are you out there. XBoard

Cyclone welcomed me when I first started posting and said to let him know how I was going riding Bindy Buell, had not seen him on here so was worried and hoping he was okay.

Anyway Opto said to pm him but I thought that well... how do you guys say a bit forward,so posted on XBoard Eye of the Storm.. Cyclone are you out there. Next time I'll listen to Opto.

Feel more embarrassed than anything, was not expecting it that's all. Being a girl I see things different, but that's okay I just learnt a lesson.

Besides I think I'll just stick to your threads
don't seem to have any problem here. Hee! Hee!

Hi Guys,

Snub13 just means looking stupid, and yes they are kinda small versions of kangaroos. Did not realise I spoke so much Aussie till I got on this board, often have to stop and think about what I want to say, but what the heck it's me and you can always ask. Hee! Hee!

What a great weekend Opto and I had, was too buggered (tired) last night to post, so doing it here at work. We only remembered on the way home to take photo's, Opto will post them tonight at home.

Uly was in fine form, we stuck our ventura upside down on the back seat rest(laid it back) for luggage, strange how easily spoilt us humans are... did not tell Opto but boy did I miss the luxury of being able to lean back!!!

Uly glided over the roads.. dirt, potholes, fresh laid tar(that got Opto, they are starting to seal the dirt roads, much to his disgust)and bumpy sealed roads.

Think I know why they call it Texas, the stars are so bright, you know like in the song.

Not quite sure why but the trip home was tough, the roads seemed rougher and backsides where aching. I think it was cause we partied so hard over the weekend.Hee! Hee!

Anyway Uly does not, repeat does not like the soft sandy dirt, we nearly lost the front end twice. The roads had been graded earlier and a big storm had come through so there where ruts everywhere and Opto was dodging them when we hit the soft stuff, geez I was happily checking the scenerey when it happened not a good feeling. But Uly come through it thank goodness.

Had to change the suspension on the way back we were bobbing about and by the time we stopped I was feeling 90 years instead of my half. Felt for Opto it was a hard slug. Funny thing though looking forward to doing it all again, 'cept maybe go a softer way home. Hee! Hee!

We got 280km out of the tank(I think, check with Opto) and the fuel light hadnt even come on, this impressed Opto, but unfortunately Uly pinged, (hard to get good fuel out bush) so Opto is going to sort it out with
megasuirt on Bindy Buell then put it on Uly.

Point is what is the good of having bikes if we cant take them where we wanna go?

Anyway I am sure Opto will give a far better technical description to our ride.

Sorry to rub it in, but the weather was perfect
and just had the best time. Uly raised eyebrows everywhere, you gotta love that! I really need to get on Bindy Buell though, so this weekend is mine for riding.

Take care, be safe and stay upright,
Bindy

From an Aussie I'd think before I called myself a wallaby in Australia, in animal terms it looks like a small kangaroo but no relation, it's also a slang term for a womens private fluffy bits! : )

You are paranoid Slayer, what are we going to do with you? Now, last weekend's ride, we saw a couple of goannas, a bearded dragon and a python, and a lot of locals at the Texas races (horses - the social event of the year - we had to borrow clothes to look half decent). Took a photo of the dirt road and it just looked like a dirt road so no need to post it. But if you really want to see it I will. Think the rear coil spring got broken in as we had been running NO rear preload for a combined mass of approx 300+lb, so now it's all different and better again. The Uly really smooths out the roads, but doesn't like the soft sandy gritty stuff too much (well what big dirt thing does?) it really likes to have it's front teeth engaged with a rocky bed. The extra fuel range over the earlier XB's is insanely fantastic, and the gearbox equally so. Anyway, it was just so nice to hear the wildlife in the bush after the fan stopped running when we had breaks in the middle of nowhere. Bindy was actually sleeping on the back on one of the dirt roads while I was giving it a bit! She has no morals that girl. Was good to get home in one piece once again.

Hiya Bindy, Chad Morgan's daughter, that sort of makes you Aussie Royalty, I'm not worthy!

I'm originally from Tassie but I'm sure I've heard guys in Brisbane refer to it as such!

The Uly's in Melbourne then off to Malaysia (could be via Perth and Darwin, depending on time). Looking forward to creating havoc in Asia (In a friendly way!) with it! : )

Brat off to Malaysia, you take care out there!!

Pretty big undertaking doing Perth and Darwin, but Uly is the bike to do it on.

Have heaps of fun and hopefully we can catch up when you get back.

Will pass your comment onto to dad, he'll crack up over it.

Again be safe...

Hi guys!

Slayer......I'm watching you!

Bindy / Opto, glad to hear you had a good (and safe) trip. Sounds like the uly was meant for the outback (with the exception of the the loose stuff). I would love to get to Australia and NZ some day. Your comments about the weather are heart breaking, we've been below freezing for about a month straight now with 8-14 inches of snow on the ground and 3-4 more by morning. Freezing rain at the moment. YUK!!
Bindy I was just giving you a hard time about the wallaby comment. I kinda figured it wasn't too good. We in the states see alot of Steve Irwins' "Crockadile Hunter" on TV.

Brat, I'm not too sure but the trip to Malaysia sounds very adventurous.....cool!!! Take lots of pics and post them! Is a trip like that reasonably affordable? That would cost me a fortune!! Anyway have a good and safe trip!

Tim, no I have not been to the "New" AMA place yet. Took a long break from bikes while I was racing sports cars and then flying model airplanes. I saw the tiny display they had at their old place up in Westerville back in the 80s. Hey, over in Dayton they have the Air Force Museum. I have been there many times and would recommend it as a must see event. You need to see the model airplane show there that is put on once a year by Ohioian modelers! If you would like to check out the sights in Ohio just let me know and I will fix you up with the local Buell riders and a place to stay. At least you are not from Michigan, GO PENN, after the BUCKEYES obviously! BTW, orange IS faster!

Hi Snub13, it's not that expensive, shipping is approx $400au from Australia to Kuala Lumpur, airfares about $900 return each, fuel is cheaper than Australia or the US, rooms are anything from $8 -$12au a night for a good room away from the tourist areas, meals for 2 are $2 to $3au, $5au will get you a banquet, beer is the dearest thing ($3 a bottle), once you're there it's cheaper than staying in Australia.

At some point I'd like to organise a ride there using rental bikes, it would be a blast to show some guys/girls around some of the places we've been to!

Brat'
I just looked on Travelocity and a round trip flight to kuala lumpur would cost $1600us each. Once you get there it looks like everything is cheap (except beer). Is it safe (what ever that means) for an Ausie or American to go to Malaysia these days? All I know is what we see in the news (not the most objective view point sometimes).

Slayer,
I've been past Wright / Patt and Pickerington several times and always tell myself (everyone else has stopped listening) that "some day" i'll have to check that out. Like the song says "some day never comes". Maybe this year!
I would also like to get to VMD some time!

You have been in the draft of too many black Ulys, I think the fumes from the paint are effecting you!

Is it spring yet???

It's dearer to get there from the US (greater distance?), there is a slightly dangerous area on the border between Malaysia and Thailand that involves religous groups blowing each other up, actually it's Buddhists being blown up, very sad! Small parties of Westerners passing through don't really come onto their radar, don't hang around too long or be at the wrong place. We'll be rock climbing near KL then Diving near the northern coast of Malaysia, then riding through to the Krabi province of Thailand for more of the same, then day trips to Myanmar (they won't let you in on bikes, very oppressive regime unfortunately) and up through mid Thailand to Lampung and Chiang Mai to climb and stay at a Elephant Conservation Centre for a few days, there's great day rides through the mountains there, then onwards to Laos etc.

Sat on a Ulysses today. I was just curious about all the talk about being on tip toes. Yes, with a 32" inseam I was on tip toes, but the darn thing just seems so balanced, I'm sure it all will fit on the road. I was suprised how the seat felt, being as wide as it was, it just seemed to fit. I am going to Texas after Christmas, maybe I can find a test ride at one of the dealerships.

Swampy,
The highest the Uly will ever be is when you sit on it at the dealership. Take into account the rear spring breaking in, and some luggage or a pillion, and it all gets better. I was a bit concerned when I first bought it but now it's OK, but I do have to be careful. After factors like comfort, very smooth suspension, much improved gearbox, lighter clutch, longer fuel range and all-road capability are taken into account it's a pretty good all-rounder package to say the least.
I think it goes around corners pretty well too because I asked the missus why she isn't as relaxed on the back of the Uly (in the twisties)compared to when we rode the Lightning, her response was the Uly seems to go around corners quicker than the Lightning. To me it feels slower. Maybe it's the height of the Uly. Whether it be fast or slow it definitely handles well.

Oh yeah, nice Sporty in your profile! I owned a 96 model from new until the first XB12 came out.

Brat, sounds like adventure plus, it helps when you know the local rules and been there before, have a big fat time! Be aware that the motor may ping a little bit in hot climates when not running the highest octane fuel - give it some normal unleaded fuel from Australia while you're still here if you don't know what I mean. Not putting down a damper, just a heads up that some will ping, but they don't after 4500rpm, so if you have some pinging, drop down a gear or 2 and hammer it (if you need to overtake).

Thanks Opto and Snub, yep, been there before but on hire bikes, they're fun but you can't take then across borders very easily. The Uly will be a blast, literally! A few countries have their problems for us, Vietnam limit is 175cc (I'll post pics of the Uly with 175 stickers on it), Myanmar and China don't usually let foreigners in with bikes but there are ways! I've already had the pinging problem in Australia with 100 degree + days!
